Even though the events we've held here so far have been challenging due to weather and rider turnout, we hope that those who did come out and supported SMUSA will bring three more guys to participate with them next time. If that happens, then we' II have full grids in no time. That said, our next southem event at Myrtle Beach Speedway on May 17, in conjunction with Bike Week, is shaping up to be a good one. We are haVing a pretty good purse in the Open class so that the dirt-track guys will have an opportunity to race for some cash in addition to racing for fun. Also, we are expecting 5000 to 7000 spectators at this event." Jennings GP Jennings. Ronda Results: April 19, 2003 (Round 1) PRESTIGE: I. David SadowskJ Jr. (Hen): 2. Kelly Payne (Hon): 3. CZ World Championships CAUfMX Vintage Motocross Series Round 3: Cahuilla Creek MX Parte SadowskiVintage Racing The Next Generation Returns to Cahuilla By MIKE EMERy JENNINGS, FL, APR. 19 Two c~ips off that 01' proverbial block. Fast brothers Matthew and David Sadowski Jr. (yes, that's Dave Sadowski's offspring) showed a clean pair of heels in the Prestige and Open events while sharing a familyowned and -serviced Honda CRF450. The Prestige class saw a particularly good battle between Kelly Payne and David Jr. At one stage, Payne had more than a 20-second lead on the youngster. David Jr. showed some real tenacity, though, and finally pinched the victory on the very last turn of the last lap after Payne stalled in the dirt section on that final lap, proving that it ain"t over till the lady in the large dress has finished singing. AMA privateer Michael Barnes showed up on a new but cantankerous Action Sport Cycles Maico 500cc two-stroke that looked like it was trying to kill him. "Barney" retired with some clutch problems after he repeatedly stalled the beast and it refused to cooperate, in the way that big, angry two-strokes can do. "I came to see what all the fuss was about: said the likable gun-for-hire. "Apart from some XR I 00 stuff, I've not really participated in anything like this before. I really needed some setup time on the Maico - a friend's bike. It was plenty fast, but the front was chattering pretty bad. I plan to go somewhere quiet and paved and work on some setup. I'm really interested in running in the AMA series; I would prefer a four-stroke, though." In the Open final, Matt Sadowski ran away from the field and won the race easily. KTMmounted Chip Golden proved that you don't need 17·inch rims to be a Supermotard frontrunner and held off fast-closing Vamaha rider William Logan. In the Novice final. Juan DeCastro and his fierce KTM 525 put down the rubber and never looked back. leading from flag to flag. Cannondale·mounted Richard Fults battled with an electrical problem, slipping from second to third over the course of the race. Kevin Brasington took full advantage of Fults' gift and cruised to second place. The SportMoto final saw KTM-mounted Gold· en take off from the pack, mounting an impressive 25-second lead over second place. A classic battle for second continued between Huskymounted Darrin Kudick and Jay Strickland throughout the race, with Kudick using the draft off of the last tum to just nip Strickland at the line. Mini Motard tumed out be the classic battle of young vs. old, with youth just losing out to wisdom. Honda-mounted Mike Emery had a ding-dong battle with his Yamaha-mounted son Justin. Bringing up the rear was DeCastro, on a borrowed XR 100. It has been rumored that DeCastro never let the throttle slip past full. The track was a nicely laid-out course, but it was definitely a tad too long. It consisted of the typically grippy asphalt for which Jennings is renowned, combined with two almost-joined dirt sections replete with a small, ramped jump. The two sections seem to give no particular advantage to either street or dirt guy; what one lost in one could be gained in the other. The morning practices and heat races went off with nary a glitch, as did the main events. As it turned out, it was a very nice and intimate event - but most would have liked to have seen more riders, in any case. "While we would have hoped for a better tumout," said one of the event's two organizers, Eric Hicks, "the racing nonetheless was everything Supermoto is all about. We're excited that it is gaining a foothold in the South and that racers are starting to commit Jennings GP: David Sadowski Jr. topped the Prestige class at the opening round of the Supermotard USA Southern Series in Jennings, Florida. 68 MAY 14, 2003' cue I ... n e vv s By STEVE CARO ANZA, CA, APR. 19 With 168 entrants signed up for round three of the CALVMX Vintage Motocross Series, this was one of the largest events in the short twoyear history of the club. Included among those entries were several machines seldom seen on the track, including brands such as Puch. Rickman and Hodaka, as well as a pristine 1963 Greeves, a late-model Can·Am, and a unique snowmobile-motor-powered Rokon. This round of CALVMX's racing included the annual CZ World Championships, the predecessor to all Vintage racing in the United States. Special classes were offered just for the Czech machines. If it had a CZ engine. there was a class for it. This included the unique CZ/Vamaha hybrid ridden by John Courts. Originally built for the 1983 CZ World Championships, Courts started with a 1976 CZ 250 Falta motor and a 1982 Vamaha VZ125 frame and installed a water· cooled cylinder head and barrel originally designed for a Honda Odyssey. Adding in ignition work, porting, etc., the result was a machine as unique as any factory "works prototype." As per club tradition, the 3D-minute Ironman race led off the day's program. In the GP Intermediate class, Maico-mounted Eric Thaanum took the holeshot as the pack rounded the first turn, followed by CZ rider Lee Holth. Battling for third were defending lronman champion Gary Meeker and his fellow Husqvama rider Paul Claybaugh. By the 15-minute mark of the race, Thaanum had a 45-second lead over the rest of his class. Using a smooth riding style on the loamy track, he kept a steady pace through· out the race. Behind him, Meeker and Clay· baugh diced for second place, while Holth was forced to ease his pace due to arm pump. At the checkered flag, Thaanum took an easy win over second-placed Meeker and thirdplace finisher Claybaugh. Holth rounded out the class in fourth. In the first moto of the very competitive Over 50 Vintage Expert class. the battle to watch was between Maico man Charlie Beck and CZ pilot Dennis Middleton. From the drop of the gate, Beck and Middleton engaged in a running dogfight for first place. On lap three, Middleton found a line around Beck on the back half of the course to take over the point position. Not one to surrender, Beck took back the spot on the very next lap! Heading into the final lap of the race, Beck held on to a narrow lead over Middleton. As the two approached a fast uphill jump section, catastrophe befell Middleton when he crashed hard just past the jump. While track personnel rushed to Middleton's side. Beck motored to an uncontested victory. After several anxious minutes, Middleton was able to return to the pit area. Unfortunately, the crash forced his withdrawal from racing for the rest of the day. The second moto provided a new challenger for Beck. Former Baja winner Gene Fetty was right behind Beck as the pack launched into the second moto. Through the first laps, the Husqvarna-mounted Fetty nipped at Beck's rear wheel. By lap three, Beck had established a small lead over Fetty and Husqvama rider Chris Schleif. At the fin- ish, Beck held on to first, with Fetty in second and Schleif a close third. In the CZ World Championship classes, the most hotly contested race was in the CZ Open class, Expert division. Reduced in numbers due to mechanical failures and rider injuries, the duel was between two of the fastest Vintage racers around, Gliry Faxon and Ed Stovin. From the drop of the gate in moto one, the two combatants battled side by side. Faxon maintained a slight lead through the first two laps. Stovin methodically stalked Faxon on every part of the course. Throwing up large amounts of roost, their Czech mounts tracked perfectly. Stovin finally found a line around Faxon on an uphill portion of the course. Entering the last lap, Stovin managed to put some lapped riders between himself and Faxon. Stovin held on for the victory, with Faxon trailing close behind for second. When the gate dropped for moto two, Stovin grabbed the lead entering the second tum of the course. As in the first moto, Faxon and Stovin dueled for the lead. Over the jumps, their contrasting styles were apparent: Faxon stuck to a low, minimal jumping style, while Stovin sailed long and far over the big tabletop jumps. Stovin clung to a slight lead throughout the moto. Entering the last lap, Stovin extended his lead as Faxon, nursing a sore thumb incurred in a crash in a previous race, backed off to secure a second-place finish, behind overall winner Stovin.
