Dunning Dazzles 'em
By JIM P. SANDERSON
CLIFFORD, PA, APR. 19
Cody Dunning of Wyoming, New York,
smoked the field in the superfast 250cc Open
Amateur class at the second race of the season at the Hurricane Hills Sports Center in
Clifford. Pennsylvania. Dunning had a perfect
I- I score when all was said and done, and he
made both wins look relatively easy. Dunning
got the holeshot in the first mota and steadily
pulled away, taking the mota win by seven
seconds. In the second moto, Dunning had the
lead by the second turn. never looked back
and crossed the finish line with a huge 17 -second advantage. Chad Milazzo, a Honda pilot
from Newark Valley, New York, rode consistently to a 2-2 tally for runner-up honors, and
Jake Massaro's 3-5 rides were good enough
to earn him the final spot on the podium.
Dunning got his KX out front quickly and
exited the first turn with the lead in the first
250cc Open Amateur mota. In tow were
Milazzo, B.J. Wightman, Darren McLaughlin
and Steve Raymond. Less than a quarter of a
lap later, when the lead riders exited the technical downhill rhythm section, Dunning and
Milazzo still occupied the top two positions,
while Wightman had moved to third, dropping
McLaughlin to fourth. Raymond held fifth.
Dunning and Milazzo had separated themselves from the rest of the field by lap two.
McLaughlin was now a solid third, Massaro
had moved to fourth, and Raymond was still
fifth. By the third lap, Dunning had a four-sec-
and lead over Milazzo, and the top five were
unchanged. Half a lap later, Massaro caught
McLaughlin and made the pass on the small
double preceding the finish line at the end of
the third lap, taking third.
Dunning had an 11-second lead by the
white-flag lap. and the top three were
unchanged. The battle for fourth and fifth,
however, was heating up, as Wightman closed
the gap on Mclaughlin and made the pass for
fourth before the end of the mota. Dunning
crossed the finish line with a seven-second
lead for the win. Rounding out the top five
were Milazzo, Massaro, Wightman and
Mclaughlin.
McLaughlin led the start of the second
moto but was quickly relegated to second by
Dunning. Chris Murray, Raymond and Milazzo
rounded out the top five. Just after starting the
second lap, Milazzo passed Murray to take
third. Raymond was fifth. Dunning had another good lead of almost 11 seconds after only 2
1/2 laps. Behind him, Milazzo caught and
passed Mclaughlin to take the runner-up spot.
A lap later, Dunning's lead was a whopping 15
seconds. Meanwhile, Mclaughlin was back in
the runner-up position, and Murray was back
to third. Milazzo dropped to fourth, and Massaro was now in fifth.
Dunning had checked out by lap four,
while the battle for the rest of the top five was
still being decided. Murray passed Mclaughlin
to take second. Then Milazzo displaced
McLaughlin to fourth. Milazzo was charging,
and he passed Murray for second. Dunning
got the second-moto win with a 17 -second
lead. Rounding out the top five were Milazzo,
Murray, Mclaughlin and Massaro.
Yamaha ace Tom Burton of Stewartsville,
New Jersey, thumped his way to a couple of
wins in the 125cc ProlExpert class. Matt
Coyle rode to a 2-4 tally for the second tier of
the podium. Sonny Nighman from Cortland,
New York, rounded out the top three via his
4-3 score.
Burton led the pack out of the first turn of
the first moto. Dave Nyzio, Jeff Paul, Coyle
and Nighman were trailing. Three turns and a
long straight later, the top five were Burton,
Coyle, Nyzio, Paul and Nighman.
Burton and Coyle were gone by lap three,
and the top four were unchanged. Caleb Miller
was now fifth. Coyle closed the gap on Burton
and tried several times to get by for the lead
but just couldn't make it happen. Coyle did
motor past Burton on the long straight in the
middle of the racecourse to take the lead, but
Burton passed Coyle back by the time they
exited the following corner. Burton took the
checkers for the mota win with a five-second
advantage. Rounding out the top five were
Coyle, Nyzio, Nighman and Jimmy Miller.
Burton led the start of the second mota,
with Paul, Coyle, Nighman and Nyzio in tow.
The top five quickly spread themselves out
and were unchanged for several laps. Burton
crossed the finish line for the second-mota win
with a seven-second lead. Rounding out the
top five were Paul, Nighman, Coyle and Caleb
Miller.
