The third loop had the same special test as the first loop, and the Dunlop/Clarke/Race Tech/DH Racing/Renthal-sponsored Leivan turned in the same time as he had on the first loop. "I can't believe I ran the exact same time the first and third loops," Leivan said. "Weird!" Carr went into the third test section right behind Jim Ingram. and Chandler went in behind Carr. Then Carr went down, allowing Chandler to catch him. and the two riders were like a train going through the woods. Carr passed Chandler back in a tight section of the trail and set his sights on Ingram, but Ingram knew Carr was coming and pulled over for him when he caught him - only to see Carr go down once again, allowing Ingram and Chandler to lead the way. Leivan once again had the best time through test four and bettered his time from test two by nine seconds. Carr also turned in a faster time than before, and he was 18 seconds slower than Leivan. Chandler was very unfortunate in this test. "My bike went into a tree at the end of the section," Chandler said, "and I had to push it about 20 feet to the finish." No falls, no stalls and no big mistakes had been made by Leivan. In the last test, he let it all hang out and turned in a blazing 6:02, which couldn't be touched. "Since none of us knew what the scores were, I figured I'd better hammer it so I would be safe," noted Leivan. Carr, on his Draper Tools/Hinson Racing/Scott/Flatland Racing/Xtrememc.com YZ250, pulled off his best ride all day, tuming in a 10:39. The next-closest rider was Parts Unlimited rep Eric Brewer, who turned in an 11:02. When all the scores had been posted. they revealed that Leivan had won every test section of the day, handing him the overall win. "The bike worked great, and I just had an awesome ride," said Leivan. Finishing second overall was Carr, with 30 seconds on third-placed Chandler. CA, APR. 6 If you've ever wanted to do something so bad that you went way out of your way to make it happen, you'll know what nearly 300 Central California motocross racers felt like back in early April. A much-needed yet untimely rainstorm hit the region during the week preceding round five of the Pacific Coast Pro-Am Series. The event was originally scheduled to run at the famous Hollister Hills track in the coastai foothills, but state officials phoned the CMA office on Friday and said that there was just too much water to deal with. Faced with the undesirable sceni!Srio of disappointing hun· dreds of rabid motoheads, the event was rescheduled for Little Okie in Madera. The track crew had their work cut out for them, but when everyone showed up on Sunday morning, they were met by an unbelievably wellprepped track. In this particular series, the Pro-Am race is sort of the main event. It's the one moto that pays more cash and dealer dollars than any other and brings everyone in the pits to the fences. Several hundred spectators saw Jess Medley take the lead going into tum one, followed by KTM rider Paul Temmerman and the rest of the pack. Temmerman began applying pressure early, and he took the lead on the second lap. Robby Baptista - an Intermediate rider was on the gas, and it looked like he would make some noise, but a few mistakes cost him a shot at the win. After getting a bad start, Buffalo Seito began moving through the pack with confidence. He moved all the way up to third, but he went down in a comer and lost his chance at the big money. That made things pretty easy for Temmerman, who outlasted Medley for the win. Simon Temmerman and Baptista completed the top five. Not far down the ladder in terms of speed was the Vet Pro class, in which some of this series' best races have taken place. Clovis resident Robbie Baker rode a couple of fiawless motos aboard his KTM 250, taking the win over John Blair, who finished second both times out. Rick Hollenbeck and Greg Dungan fought hard for the final podium spot. The former was just returning from a broken hand 60 MAY 14, 2003· c: U c: • e and fell prey to Dungan in the first moto. Hollenbeck dug deep, though, and beat Dungan to the checkers the second time out; his 4·3 score bested Dungan's 3-4 tally for third place. Rick's younger brother Blayne Hollenbeck also rode well, finishing fifth overall. In the always-popular Vet Beginner class, Fresno's own Joey Pistacchio posted his first win of the series with a clean sweep. It didn't come easily, as he had nine other aspiring veterans of life wanting to take his spot at the point. Ronald Holstine and Bryan Custer were both in the mix at times, but Pistacchio had his Moto One-tuned CRF dialed in on the tight and technical track. Holstine finished second with a 2-3 showing. Custer, on the other hand, had a sub-par first moto and finished fourth with 6-2 scores. Pistacchio was aglow after the event. After suffering through assorted injuries over the past year, it was definitely good to see it all work out for the diminutive thumper pilot. Fresh off of a solid showing at the Texas Amateur races, American Suzuki-backed Casey Hinson dominated 125cc Z1ction, posting sweeps in the Youth and lntermediate divisions. Kyle Foltz was closest in the Youth class, while Shawn Taylor put up a fight in the Intermediate ranks. Both started fast. but neither could match Hinson's pace lap after lap. If Hinson keeps it up, he should be a threat at the big Amateur races this summer. Dustin Pipes got a long-awaited victory in the 85cc X class over friendly rival Nicolas Baker. The two youngsters can be seen hanging out together every weekend, but once they get on the track, it's all business, Pipes has suffered through several injuries in the last two years, so getting back to first place was a big boost for his confidence. Pipes backed it up by taking the 8xc Intermediate crown with a 2- 1 showing. Baker won the first moto but slipped up in the second and had to settle for second overall. By remaining flexible, both the riders and the CMA were rewarded with another great day of racing. Rider participation continued its staggering growth trend, and the fun factor seemed to follow suit. As the sun sank low, all eyes were on the next weekend's series finale: a two·day, five·moto endurance test that was sure to produce even more great memories. n Little OIUe Raceway Meclera, California R..... As if that weren't enough, he was gridded toward the back of the field in each race, but he managed to maneuver through traffic and work his way to the front and to victory in each event. In the Unlimited Grand Prix race, holeshot master Jim Pihokken nailed the early lead. He then proceeded to lead the first half of the race, while the rest of the pack scrambled to catch up. Former Canadian Sportbike Champion Frank Trombino moved through traffic and into second place. By lap three, Luck had slipped into third place, initiating a three-rider breakaway battle for the lead. Halfway through the rllce, Luck moved up on the inside of Trombino and passed him at the exit of the turn-six esses. He was on a mission to get around Pihokken, which was not an easy task. Trombino, also in hot pursuit, performed some visually spectacular maneuvers, sliding his rear Pirelli tire and backing the Rl through several comers on the track. With two laps to go, Luck made his move and passed Pihokken on the outside while Trombino passed on the inside, dropping Pihokken down to third place - but only briefly. By the start of the final lap, he was up to second place and chasing after Luck, who had started to stretch out his lead. Trombino continued to battle with Pihokken to the checkered flag, but he couldn't get around him again. Luck had about a 20-bikelength lead at the line, and Pihokken finished second, just ahead of Trombino. Statistically speaking, Luck, Pihokken and Alex Ferreira were the biggest winners of the weekend, each taking home three first-place trophies for the event. The Cheetah Racing Bod ies/Vortex/Luc k y Rac i ng/Prod u ction Cleaning-sponsored Luck also won the GTO and GTU races.
