Florida Motocross Series

Ketchum If You can
By CRAIG AND ANGELA JOHNSON
WALDO. FL, APR. 6
For its third round, the Florida Motocross
Series stopped at the beautiful track in Waldo,
Florida. The weather was great for riding, with
temperatures hovering around 80. Showtime
Motorsports Park set a new record for entries
at the track and was a high for this year's
series, so far, with 325.
Kody Ketchum was the rider to beat in the
51 cc and 65cc ciasses. Known for his speed.
the competition was told to "'catch him if you
can." The only moto in which someone did
was the first moto of the 51cc Open (4-9)
ciass. Ketchum placed second. but from that
moto on, all everyone saw of him was the
backside. Ketchum won the last five motos
entered and won the overalls in the 51cc
(7-9). 51 cc Open and 65cc Beginner ciasses.
Ketchum's main rival in the 51cc Open
class is points leader Austin Cole, who won
that first moto. Hunter Baker won the battle for
third, over Hector Roman Jr. KTM-mounted
Corey Brown took fifth.
Ketchum was ready with a vengeance in
malo two. and he took the win, over Cole.
Cole lost some points to Ketchum, as the two
are only three points apart heading into round
four. Roman got the best of Baker the second
time out to round out the podium.
The rest of the day went well for Ketchum.
The Cobra rider won both 51cc (7-9) matos,
over Cole. Ketchum has a perfect three-race
score to lead the class. Roman took another
third overall with a 4-3 score.
Ketchum will not last long in the 65cc
Beginner class, as he has taken very well to
riding the machine. The Fort Pierce rider won
with a perfect score over closest finisher Corey
Brown (3-2). Nathan Beauregard's 4-3 score
won the tie breaker for third overall with the
better mota finish the second time out over
Baker's 2-5 score. Ketchum ciosed to within
four points of Beauregard in the series points
race.
Speaking of perfect scores, all these riders
have won the first three rounds in their respective ciasses: Baker has the lead in the
51cc (4-6) ciass. Derek Hall has it in the 65cc
(10- 11) class. Tyier Tiffany has it in the 85cc
(14-15) ciass, J.B. Ballard has it in the Open
Money class, and Kirsten Banka has it in the
Women's class. Can anyone stop these riders?
Only time will tell.
Some of the best racing action on the day
happened in the very first ciass. The 125cc
Beginner class was a thriller to the end of the
last lap of the second mota. Stuart Woodward
Showtime Motorsports Park: Kody Ketchum was the only rider to win three classes
at round three of the Florida Motocross Series in Waldo.
took the first-mota win, over a feisty bunch of
riders. John McConnell took second, over
Jacob Priest, and Anthony Lodato finished
ahead of Reese Wacker for fourth.
The second moto started badly for the top
two riders of the first moto; both were stuck
back in the pack and only made it up into the
top six. McConnell got fifth. and Woodward
was sixth. Priest led the pack, and the overall
was his for the taking. Finishing behind Priest
was Johnny Mejia, and his brother David Mejia
finished behind in third. Johnny leads
McConnell by only one point. with Lodato,
Woodward and David all within 10 points.
Running his first race of the series was
Ricky Renner. The fast Yamaha rider has been
out in Texas, racing and watching his older
brother, Ronnie, do those wild stunts in
freestyle competition. Ricky took the 85cc
(12-13) and Supennini wins.
The 85cc (12- 13) ciass went perfectly for
Ricky, with two moto wins. Second overall
went to Esteban Carmona, with a 3-2 score,
over Jimmy Page's 4-3 tally. Series leader
Dalton Yingling had an off day, finishing fifth
overall with a 2-8 tally, but he still leads Page
by five points.
The Supermini class was a little more hotly
contested. Ricky took the first-moto win over
close rivals Tiffany and Dustin Jensen. In the
second mota, Jensen got the upper hand on
Ricky to steal the win. Ricky still got second
and the overall, beating out Tiffany. Jacksonville's Zack Alkire took two fourths for
fourth overall. Tiffany still has a good 17-point
lead over Jesse Freeman. who finished sixth
overall.
Another newcomer to the series was Tyler
Livesay. The Honda rider won the Youth/Big
Wheel (12-15) and 125cc B ciasses. In the
125cc B class, two second-place finishes were
good enough for the overall. Points leader Dean
Dyess took the first-mota win but could only
finish third in the second moto for second overall. Brandon Abell used a 5-1 score for third
overall. In the Youth ciass, Livesay took a 1-2
finish for the overall, over Abell's 5-1 efforts.
