NOW YOU CAN RACE ON WHAT THE PROS USE By THE CYCLE NEWS STAFF PHOTOS BY FRANK HOPPEti AND KIT PALMER SAN BERI'IARDINO, CA, APR. 16 veryone knows that the factory guys get the good stuff. Stuff that you can't get, like works suspension and engine components and even tires. Until now, that is. At least when it comes to tires. Just because Ricky Carmichael uses the same Dunlop D756 knobbies that you do doesn't mean that they are the same tires. They may look the same, have the same knobby pattern and the same logo stamped on the side, but they're different. And, yes, his work better. You see, the Dunlop D756 tires Carmichael uses are constructed of a different compound than the ones you buy at your local bike shop. His E new Dunlop D756RR (the RR stands for "Race Replica," of course) to the public. They're Carmichael's favorite tires - he pretty much uses them on all of the tracks. Recently, Dunlop invited the press and many people from the motorcycle industry to Glen Helen Raceway to give the new D756RRs a try. It was quite the affair. Many factory teams and riders were also invited, and once the track opened for testing, the scene wasn't much different from a practice session at a National Motocross. Team Honda attended, as did many of the guys from the Boost Mobile/Yamaha/Troy Racing team, Red Bull KTM, Team ECC, MotoworldRacing.com Suzuki, MotoXXX, and others. It wasn't difficult distinguishing the stars from the press guys, that's for sure. And there was more than just riding to be had. Dunlop's Broc Glover organized other fun activities, such as a game of Jeopardy that tested everyone's knowledge of the sport of motocross, from past to present. Art Eckman hosted the game, and contestants, who included some of the factory racers, competed for Dunlop Dollars that they could turn in for tires are made of a special, softer compound that adheres really well to intermediate to soft terrain, such as what's found at Glen Helen Raceway on a cool day. Unfortunately, since the "works" tires are so soft, they don't last long. After every moto, Carmichael's tires get replaced by new ones, which, for him is no big deal because he's not paying for them. You, on the other hand, are, and that's why you get the longerlasting D756s in the stores. But don't you wish that for those big races, maybe a Loretta Lynn's Qualifier, or a Ponca City Qualifier, or when your state class championship is on the line, that you could, for one day, mount up the same exact tire that Carmichael uses to get that extra advantage? Well, now you can. Dunlop has decided to offer the Glen Helen Raceway was the site for Dunlop's introduction of its new D756RR knobbies. The tires feature the same compound as the ones the factory riders use. 54 MAY 14. 2003' .. U .. I e nevws
