Peninsula Indoor Outlaw 100 LOCAL TALENT Outlaws in the Warehouse By KAREN GOOLD SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA. CA. APR. 17 An empty warehouse with a polished concrete floor in an industrial area provided the space needed to run an exciting night of outlaw racing. Riders signed up on a yellow tablet. heats were determined by the line they signed up on, and positioning on the track was done in the same manner. Thirty·six riders from all over the Bay Area were aboard 1aOee motor~ cycles, riding in six heat races for a chance to go to the "A" main event. Riders placing in the first spot went directly to the main, while riders placing in the second spot went to the "B" main. A semi was held for riders placing in the third spot. Among those who showed up for this event were Dave Bostrom and road racers Grant Riggs and Joe Carrillo. Riggs and Carillo competed in the first eight-lap heat race; Carillo placed first. and Riggs placed second. Mike Besemer was first in the second heat, in front of Brooke Shaw. Bostrom took the third heat, followed by Ryan Raymond. It was Chad Lencioni in front of AI Sal in heat four. Tyler Pullen got to the checkers first in the fifth heat, followed by Nick Conti. Last but not least, Rich Facciano took the sixth-heat victory. in front of "Dante." The third-place finishers went to the semi for a place in either the A or B main. The riders in the semi included Dave Kunzelman. Paul "Hollywood" Sanburn, Johnny Larson, Jason Pullen, "Dan" (on a gray Kawasaki), and another rider who shall remain nameless. I never knew there was so much to it, that my bike was way too stiff. Eddie changed so many things. I love it. Everyone should take this class. Come Sunday morning, the students headed out to Willow Springs to tryout their newfound knowledge. First "Professor Mulder- walked the entire track, pointing out the correct lines and referencing corner speed, entrance speed, exit speed. one's position on the track; basically, he told riders where to be and why. Next. students were turned out in groups to tryout what they had lea med. All the while, Mulder was trackside, motioning to each rider as he went by as to where he should be and where he should not be, and always evaluating each rider's progress. At the lunch break, progress reports were verbally handed out between bites of the catered cuisine. Speed Channel even squeezed in an interview with Mulder for its upcoming show on the school. After lunch, riders had the Eddie Mulder's Dirt Track School: At his annual Dirt rest of the day for track time, to Track School at Willow Springs International Raceway try once again to put into use in Rosamond, California, Eddie Mulder gives more than the techniques they had leamed. a few pointers to dirt-track racers of all levels. Michelle DiSalvo (one of the Pro riders in attendance) took this as well as the second-place finisher in the semi. Riggs was on the inside pole. and he and Conti and Raymond were three abreast coming out of the first turn. On the seventh lap, Conti got by Raymond, and the race finished as Riggs, Conti and Raymond. Riggs and Conti went on to the A main. Ten riders were on the line for the A main. Coming out of the first tum, Besemer (on the pole) and Facciano were in front, followed by Carrillo, Riggs and Bostrom. By the end of the first lap, Carllio and Riggs had both gotten by Facciano. Besemer pulled away from the pack and rode his own race out front, while Carrillo, Riggs, Facciano and Bostrom followed. During lap five, Bostrom got by Facciano, and the race finished as Besemer, Carillo, Riggs and Bostrom. Carillo and Riggs got together at the end of the race to tease Besemer about riding a 120 to beat them. Complete with a victory lap and trophy girl, the "awards presentation" was held, and the top three 100 riders were presented with trophies for their efforts. There were also minibike contests.
