In p a r t n e r s h i p with Inyc. National Forest dents of nearby homes. Trash and dust control also were a major priority. as the track's future seems to depend largely on the outcome of the legal case neighbors have brought against the track, citing noise, dust, traffic and trash concerns. While it should be noted that the track existed long before the homes, organizers know that their efforts to keep the track open must address these issues to gain the support of the city. Now. enough about the politics of the track's reopening: The real story was the mas· sive turnout and enthusiasm the event brought. The Pro classes featured the biggest gate of any race in northern Nevada this year, with 18 racers in the 250cc class and 14 in the 125cc ranks. Carson City's own Nathan Tiearney ended up on top of both. besting a field that included top Nevada Pros Jimmy Nelson. Mike Mason and Kenny Lash. Tiearney. aboard Michael's Powersports/ Axo/Scon-backed Suzukis. faced serious battles from these riders and the rest all day long. but he emerged to win all but the first 250cc moto (which was won by Lash). Tieamey has been a notable rider since his Mini days in Carson, and the reopening allowed him to further his reputation at the top of the northern Nevada field at the very track he grew up on. After his impressive first-moto victory, Lash rode solid all day long to claim second in the 250cc class on his Big Valley Hondasponsored CRF. Yamaha's Nelson took a strong second overall in the 125cc class after a close battle with Tiearney in the second moto. Mason took his Smith-backed SUlukis to third in both the 125cc and 250cc classes. Feedback was very positive. Somewhere between Fernley's sand and Stead's hardpack, Champion's composition gave riders a taste of the loamy dirt that helped make Silver State Raceway successful throughout the 1990s. Tiearney, Lash and Mason all spent enormous amounts of time at Carson back then. and it has served them well as Pros. NMXD deserves applause for returning Carson to the racers, and there's now hope that Champion Speedway will again be a permanent part of the local scene in northern Nevada. Results 50 (4-6) 0-1: 1. APR. 6 Spring weather and spring fever brought 299 riders to the third annual Lewis and Clark Grand Prix event, sponsored by Sports City Cyclery. The snow in the Great Falls area had melted several days before, leaving the soil on the racecourse loose, loamy and nearly perfect! Designed with no jumps and run over varied terrain, the track's layout was a big hit with the riders. This year, a variety of sweeping turns were added to the 5·mile course, making for tighter racing.
