Evans Bests the Beginners By JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS RANCHO CORDOVA, CA, APR. 6 Gated among a 15-rider field, Cody Evans topped the 60cc Beginner class at round two of the AMP Spring Series, presented by Swift Auto World, Yamaha of Modesto and DH Cycles of Modesto. Utilizing good starts on the day, Evans carded a perfect moto score on the always-challenging AMP National Track at Prairie City. Despite being the longest track on the Spring Series schedule, all the little 60cc riders showed they were up to the challenge as four-lap motos, which felt like an eternity for some of them, tested their stamina. Expected rains never materialized, and pleas~ andy cool springlike weather was the order of the day. Mota one saw Kawasaki jockey Connor McFarland out front first, followed by Evans, Derek Bee, Jason Becker and Gunnar Sigler. Evans quickly displaced McFarland for the lead, and with clear sailing ahead, he began to open up a gap on the field. Becker put on a charge and passed Bee, and then he challenged McFarland for the second spot. On lap three, Becker made the pass but found Evans too far gone by then. McFarland, Bee and Paul D'Eredita rounded out the top five. Evans owned moto two, as his KTM hooked up well on the cement start, and he rounded the first tum well ahead of the pack. Becker gave chase, with Jason Caldwell, Bee and McFarland in tow. But it was all Evans up front, and he took an unchallenged wire-towire victory for the overall on the day. Becker put in another consistent ride for the second spot and second overall on the day. Caldwell hung on for third, and his J 2-3 efforts netted him seventh on the day. McFarland (3-4) rounded out the top three, and R.J. Mendez (6-6) and Bee (4-8) rounded out the top five on the day. Only two riders made up the 60cc Novice class, and Sacramento's Scotty Craven led every lap of both motos for a perfect run on the day, over Kawasaki pilot Zach McFarland. In BOcc Beginner action, two divisions were required for the 43-rider field. In Division One, Kyle Tucker topped the field as he rode his Yamaha to a pair of solid wins. It was a tie score for the second spot after Kyle Freitas and Blake Ballard duked it out. Freitas had the second spot from the start and just held off Ballard at the checkers for the runner-up spot. John DeSilva (3-5) and Zach McFarland (5-4) rounded out the top five. In Division Two, Josh Hammett took top honors, over Ryan Connors. Then Connors held the lead in mota two and appeared to be headed for the victory, but Hammett came blazing through the field for the win. Chris Paulos, Rick Felicio and Dakota Williams rounded out the top five. Jordan Rosa (KTM). 50 (7-8) STK: I. R.J.1o\endez (IITM); 2. Gunnar Sigler (IITM): 3. James Sacher (Pol); 4.
