LEE UVESEY WOODUlND, WA, APR. 12 Terry Hamness put together two good motos at Woodland MX Park to finish ahead of local Pro Dale Ainslie and 15 other riders in the 250cc Pro class. Ainslie used his experience and knowledge of his home track to smoke the competition in moto one. Ainslie was followed by Robert Holtgrew and Hamness. Sean "Sparky" Sparkman had a little bit of a rough time following a spectacular "airfish" get-off during practice. Sparky put together a bike borrowed from injured pal Kiel Krogstadt, but he suffered a broken clutch lever and finished eighth in moto one. Sparky got the holeshot in moto two and managed to stay in front for two laps, but he had Nick Foister and Hamness breathing down his neck. Foister and Hamness finally reeled Sparky in and got by, finishing onetwo. Sparky hung on for third. The overall spots went to Hamness, Ainslie and Holtgrew. followed by Sparky, Brad McLean, Tyson Lindeman and Brandon Thomas. Foister eamed this round's "Worstto-First" award by going from 16th in moto one to second in moto two. Heavy rains on Friday night made the track a mess on Saturday morning. Ted DeVol promised the track would be in great condition by race time, and he delivered. eye e Ainslie owned the track in the 125cc Pro class, getting the holeshot in both motos. Thomas, Lindeman and McLean went back and forth throughout the first moto, with Thomas finally taking second. Lindeman and McLean were plastic-to-plastic for much of the race. B&E Racing's Eddie "Too Fast" Payne dominated the 250cc Intermediate class. Payne got the holeshot in both motos and managed to stay in front of the pack of fast riders behind him. Alex Wirkus and Paul Batterby kept Payne honest. The Supermini class had some of the best racing of the day. In moto one, Shawn Haberlock and Chris Johnson pulled a lead on the pack and rode side by side for three laps until Haberlock's front wheel took a dive in a corner. That was all Johnson needed to get past and stay in front until the finish line. Moto two was every bit as exciting. Johnson got the holeshot. He and Haberlock were side by side again for three exciting laps. Then Haberlock put a classic, clean block-pass on Johnson to get in front and stay in front. His second- and first-place finishes put Haberlock on the top of the podium, followed by Johnson and "Sick Nick" Van Sickel. Shiri Howell was the top girl in the class, beating her brother Chris for sixth. Dan MDirt" Chapman lived up to his nickname by taking a soil sample in every moto n e _ s MAY 7,2003 75
