Whitecotten and Frankie Lee took turns leading the short track, but Hayden used an excellent low line off tum four to take the win. Frankie Lee was in second at the stripe, over Whitecotten, Ethan and Lewis. Hayden used holeshots to sweep the 85cc classes. On the short track, he went to the front and took off; Jonathan Heiden was the only rider able to match his pace. Frankie Lee led the rest of the pack for third and took that position, over Whitecotten, Ethan, Lewis and Cody Brown. Hayden took a close IT win over Frankie Lee, Heiden. Whitecotten and Ethan. Patrick Pyle led a three-rider battle for the lead in the 200cc Pro-Am short track; the other two were Hayden and Erhardt Heisner. Pyle only slipped a wheel, but that was all Hayden needed to slip underneath and take the victory. Pyle held off Heisner for second, whilQ Whitecotten and Heiden filled out the top five. Hayden would also d"m the 200cc Amateur win with a wire·to·wire riOt: over Frankie Lee, Matt Paterson and Justin Jenkle. The 200cc Pro-Am IT started with heatrace winner Tommy Fox on the penalty line. Hayden was first away. over Pyle, Mike Fox, Frankie Lee and Heisner. Tommy was im· mediately on the move, passing three riders going into the infield and picking off one more per lap. With one lap to go, he passed Hayden and wheelied to the win. Hayden took a safe second, over Frankie Lee, Fox, Pyle and Whitecotten. By BOBBY LEw,s BARDWELL, KY, APR. 5 Tyler Porter started the Kentucky Outdoor Dirt Track Series on the right note by taking class wins in both the short track and IT. Bill Gruwell led the Open Amateur shorttrack final down the back straight, with Porter putting the pressure on from the second-place slot. Gruwell held the point for two more laps until slipping up high, allowing Porter to slip underneath. Porter took advantage and opened up a comfortable lead en route to the win. Gruwell was able to hold on to second, OVQr a fast-closing Dakota Simmons and Jordan Jenkle. Porter had a little ~asier time in the TT as he was unheaded for eight lo~ and cruised to the win over Simmons, Jenkle and Jt.utin Jenkle. Gruwell made a comeback in the Vet class with a romp over the field. Dean Faulkner kept him in sight to finish second, while Steve Atwell followed in third. Dennis Porter led the Senior main event at the flash of the light but had his hands full with Gene Yopp, who sat in second. Yopp stuck a wheel in at every corner, and it finally stuck on the white-flap lap. They ran into tum three side by side and Dennis lowsided while Yopp took the win. Dave Brown inherited second. Tyler Whitecotten ran an error-free 65cc IT main and held off Frankie Lee Gillim to card the win. Ethan Gillim worked his way into 74 MAV7,2003' cue I e n e vv 51; 200 AM: 1. Hayden GiJllm (SUI): 2. Loretta Lynn's AMA Mid-East Area Qualifier Day 2: Scenic Highlands Motosports Park Barnes, Calkins Top LL Qualifier By ROB PETRAS NEWCOMERSTOWN, OH, APR. 6 Some of the state's best riders showed up at Scenic Highlands Motosports Park to begin the long, tough journey to the Loretta Lynn's Amateur National Championships. Getting a great start here at the AMA Mid-East Area Qualifier was Matt Barnes from Magnolia, Ohio, who won both the 125cc and 250cc A/Pro Sport classes on his Team Green/Dunlop Kawasaki. In the first 250cc A/Pro Sport mota. Carl Schlacht took the lead on a McCune Cycle World/Spy/Gary Bailey KTM, with Barnes and Fox/Andrew Cycle/FMF /Gary Semics/VP Suzuki jockey David Kilgore just off his rear fender. The top three pulled out a 15-second gap over fourth-placed rider Nathan Skaggs, on a Yamaha. Halfway through the race, Kilgore fell, allowing Skaggs past. Then Schlacht took a tumble and dropped back to second. Bames took the lead, but Kilgore was putting on a charge. At the finish, it was Barnes, Kilgore, Schlacht and Skaggs. Skaggs grabbed the lead off the start of moto two and disappeared. He was never challenged. Barnes settled for a second-place finish and the overall. Blasting up through the pack after starting outside the top 10 were Kilgore and Schlacht, who went on to finish third and fourth, respectively. Schlacht again jumped out quickly to iead the first 125cc Pro Sport mota, but before the first lap ended, Bames was past him. Kilgore got by Schlacht on the second lap and set out after Bames. The two stayed close. but Kilgore couldn't find a way around. Two laps from the finish, Kilgore put on an all-out attack and bolted past and went on to take the win, with Barnes, Schlacht and Skaggs in tow. Kawasaki jockey Hunter Shryock was fifth. Skaggs was out front first as the gate dropped for mota two. That lead was shortlived, however, as a determined Kilgore powered into first through turn two's sweeper. Barnes jumped into second and stalked Kilgore. In third, Skaggs had his hands full keeping ~.:;hl~cht at bay. Barnes needed the win for the overall, ana he ""'ok it on lap five. Kilgore was second, and Schlacht [l)".,\ ... '"l hard-fought third, over Skaggs. Cody Calkins, riding a Black Hawk/FCR/ Klotz KTM 125, was nearly flawless as he took two class overalls and three out of four motos. The East Sparta, Ohio, racer held off a trio of Yamaha four-strokes in 125cc B Modified competition; second through fourth were John Wisenbarger, Treavis Poynter and Timothy Hollenbeck. Finishing behind him in the 125cc (12-15) Modified contest were Hollenbeck in second and Navarre, Ohio's A.J. Hattery, on a Jf,J Motors/Bridgestone/Extreme Sports Suzuki RM, in third. As the 38 125cc C Modified riders tore out of the gate for their first mota, Yamaha rider Andy Sczypta led them all the way to the finish. Putting in a fantastic charge was Kawasaski jockey Nick Edgell; he started outside the top 15 and worked his way up to fourth. Matt Scarboro from Mount Ulla, North Carolina, took the class overall with a 2-1 tally, with Sczypta and Edgell taking second and third. Fourth overall was Honda rider Perry Scott.
