Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series Round 2: Blue-Grey 100 STORY AND PHOTOS BY HEATHER GREER BODDS CREEK, MD, APR. 6 More than 600 riders turned out ~for the second round of the Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series, and the track did not disappoint. Mother Nature was kind to the riders, providing dry weather the week before and a brisk, sunny day, perfect for racing. The Blue-Grey event featured a track that had a National-caliber motocross course, wide-open four-wheeler trails, a dirt-track oval, and a small section of twisted woods trail. One AA rider commented, "This was the only race where you could rip your arm on a tree root," referring to the way the wide-open trails were cut so deeply into the hillsides. There were quite a few bottoms that were sopping wet and would grab the wheel of an unwary rider. Cycle Tech/Axo/Zechman's Yamaha rider Ryan Rogers got the jump off the start, pushing Casey Cycle City/Chick-fil-A/MSR-backed Yamaha rider Jason Greer to the outside. Motor Imports/Answer/Scott-sponsored Kawasaki rider Danny Morrison shot past Greer into the first turn to challenge Rogers. Greer answered by charging past Morrison down the first hill. Rogers, Greer and Morrison freight-trained into the woods, with the 12 others close behind. SM City/Fine Line Suspension/Mont Claire Yamaha rider Jeff Drury was also in the hunt during the first lap, but he got mixed up, took a wrong turn and got back on the trail in the middle of the pack. By the end of the first lap, Rogers shot out of the woods with Greer right on his rear fender. Greer got past Rogers once when he took a deep, slower line at a mudhole. Rogers hung with Greer until they got out onto the motocross, and then Rogers swung around Greer on an off-camber turn, retaking the lead. The two stayed tight in an extremely close contest for the overall. Rogers took the overall win with Greer just one second behind him. By the finish, Drury had worked his way back up to third. KTM rider Bob White dominated the 200cc A class for the first half of the first lap. White and Motor Imports/Havoline/Zeke's Cycle Center-backed Kawasaki rider R.J. Ferguson got side by side going into a mud section, but only Ferguson got out. White dumped it over in the mud but got it going quickly enough that Cycle Connection/EBC-backed Honda rider Daniel Parker didn't catch him. Ferguson wiped out in a sweeper turn in the motocross. White flew by, and Ferguson got right back on his tail. Ferguson was unable to make his move until the two got back out onto the motocross, where he turned up the throttle and scooted by White. Ferguson took the win with a minute-and-a-half lead over White. Parker rode a consistent race for third. Suzuki rider Dean Ingram, who took the holeshot off the 250cc A start, was followed by KTM rider Chris Taylor, Suzuki rider Travis Williford, and Kawasaki rider Timmy Craddock. The only aspect of the track that gave Ingram any grief was the braking bumps, but they didn't slow him down too much, as he kept the lead the entire race. While Ingram was concentrating on extending his lead, Craddock passed Williford on the dirttrack oval to challenge Taylor for second. Taylor and Craddock went back and forth for a while until Taylor wrecked, giving Craddock the opportunity to pass and take second place. Taylor recovered in time to get third at the finish, just six seconds behind Craddock. By the end of the first lap of the Vet A-class race, Honda rider Andy Lagzdins took the win unchallenged. Lagzdins' fast ride put him in the top 10 overa II. KTM rider Chuck Honeycutt got a slow start, "tip-toeing through the injury zone" (the tabletop where he crunched his foot last year). Once Honeycutt got in the woods, everything came together and he picked up the pace, working his way through the pack. Honeycutt caught up to Honda rider David Baldwin, and the two raced for about four laps. Going into the woods during the fifth lap, Baldwin pulled over and let Honeycutt by. Honeycutt stayed in second to the finish, and Baldwin held on to third. Kawasaki rider Ben 'Phillips grabbed the holeshot in the Mini A class. Kawasaki rider Brad Bakken recovered from a slow start to pass everyone in the class on the motocross track and enter the woods first. Suzuki rider Kyle Honeycutt came back from a last-place start to find Kawasaki rider Nick Smith and Honda rider Ryan Robbins hung up with a course worker on a four-wheeler. Kyle found a line around them and set his sights on Bakken. When Bakken came out onto the motocross course, Kyle was right on his rear fender. The two came into the finish together, with Bakken in the lead and Kyle second. Robbins came through the finish in third. eN Budds Creek MX Plrk Budds Creek, Mlryland Results: April S, 2003 [Round 21 orA: I. Ryan Rogers (Yam). AA: 1. Jason Greer (Yam): 2. Jeff Drury (Yam); 3.
