Muhlenberg County Convention Center
Carver Slices to
Greenville Victories
By BOBBY LEwiS
GREENVILLE, KY, MAR. 29
Promoter Steve Nace put a new compound on
the Greenville indoor dirt that made for a
tacky surface that offered multiple lines and
good racing. Jeff Carver found the new sur·
face to his liking, and he took a passel of class
wins on the night.
Carver's first win came from a holeshot in
the 85cc short·track main. He led a string of
riders around and was first to the nag after a
race-long battle with Frankie Lee Gillim and
Tyler Whitecotten. Jonathan Heiden came
from the back row to run fourth, with Michael
Johnson rounding out the top five.
The 85cc IT was an instant replay of the
short·track contest: Carver took off for anoth·
er win, with Gillim again in the runner-up spot.
Johnson moved to third, over Heiden, White·
cotten and Nick Page.
The 200cc Amateur class also belonged to
Carver. He swept both the short-track and IT
mains. Patrick Pyle took the second spot in
the short track by holding off Frankie Lee,
c.J. Cooper and Hayden Gillim. Hayden
moved to second on the IT, ahead of Cooper,
Frankie Lee and Pyle.
Justin Hanna was unbeaten in 200cc Pro·
Am action, as he swept both main events.
Frankie Lee was once again second on the
short track, followed by Hayden, Carver and
Heiden. The Gillims changed spots in the IT,
with Carver placing fourth, over Whitecotten,
Erhardt Heisner and Cooper.
Frankie Lee's payback would come in the
65cc class, the largest class of the night. Two
heats and a semi whittled the fIeld down to a
12-rider main. Frankie Lee got the holeshot in
both main events and held on for close wins
over Michigan rider Johnson and Whitecotten.
Hayden rode to fourth on the short track, over
Alabama's Miles Thornton. Jake Lewis took
the fourth slot in the IT, with Hayden fIfth.
Lewis swept the 50cc Chain class in both
events, with Ethan GiUim a close second in
each one. Andrew Johnson fIlled the third spot
on the oval, over Scott Steinwagner, Nick
McFadden and Joseph Crafton. McFadden
came up to third in the IT, with Steinwagner,
Johnson and Crafton follOWing. Ethan topped
the 50cc Shaft fIeld, with Luke Baird second
and McFadden third on the short track.
McFadden and Baird traded places in the IT.
Stephen Hartzel made his return to racing
a good one, as he took the Open Pro win. He
pulled the holeshot and had his hands full with
Logan Myers but never bowed under the pres·
sure, taking the win by a wheel. Aaron Ladd
followed in third, over Rod Hartzel, Coy
Matthews and Dean Faulkner.
Myers took his share of wins on the night.
as he topped the Open Pro-Am short track
and IT and the Open Pro IT. Hartzel doubled
up with wins in the Vet Over 30 and Over 40
fIelds. Ron Anderson seemed to be healed up
from the last race, as he carded the win in the
Over 50 class, over Dennis Porter. Ed Clark.
John Skinner and Clyde Modlin.

East Bend Motorsports
Fields Sallies Forth
By MARK NEUENS
EAST BEND, NC, MAR. 29
East Bend's newly redesigned track was put to
the test at the opening AMA District 29 race
for 2003.
Four riders came out In the 50cc Shaft
class. Kyle Mitchell took the holeshot, followed by Montgomery Fields, Chris Turbyfill
and Malik Miles. Mitchell, starting his second
season of racing, held the first spot for about a
lap, and then Fields made it by. Turbyfill
made the move later on to take the second
spot. Fields ran great races in both motos to
take first overall, and Turbyfill took second
overall. Mitchell held off Miles in both motos to
take third overall.
Cooper Webb put on a show, flying
through the 50cc (7-8) class. Webb swept the
class well in front of Dylan Carringer, Blake
Lewis, Cody Kosut and Tyler Gerringer. Webb
had some difficulty on his 65cc machine,
though, falling to third overall in the 65cc
(7 -9) class, behind Forrest Trent and Zach
Newberry.
There was a great race in the 85cc (7-11)
class. Virginia's Jamie Fringer led the first
moto, with Thomas Neuens running second.
Kevin McMullan went by Neuens after coming
back from a bad start, and Fringer crashed
and wouldn't be back for the second moto.
McMullen took first overall, followed by
Neuens and Forrest Trent.
Jonathan Balfour took first overall in the
Schoolboy class, with Forrest Seebeck taking
second. New this year to 125cc bikes, Jeremy
Reid and Skylar Payne went back and forth,
but the two got hung up, and Payne came out
first to take fourth overall, while Reid settled
for fIfth.
A strange spring rain with heavy snow fol·
lowed this Saturday night race, canceling out
the Sunday race, which would also have been
a U.S. Eastern Spring Series race. It will be
rescheduled for a later date.
