Stock Ranch Wineland on the Rocks By GEORGE PENNINGTON CANON CITY, CO, MAR. 23 Just a week after the largest snowstorm in five years incapacitated most of Colorado, the Rocky Mountain Trials Association hosted round two of its series in Canon City. The desertlike conditions prevalent in this southern part of the state allowed for a qUick melt-off and dry conditions. The rugged terrain and large rock formations allowed club members the latitude to layout a challenging and demanding course. Championship·c1ass rider Keith Wineland dominated the day, finishing with just 15 points, compared with the 36-point score of runner-up Zach Clement, who was the winner of round one. Clement just squeaked past the 37 -point score of Chad White, who held a five-point advantage over Clement going into the second loop, but mistakes by White, and a strong ride by Clement, left White at a three-point deficit entering loop three. Sherco·mounted Mike Young took the fourth position with 38 points on the day_ Young's downfall occurred in sections nine and 10. Wineland and Clement cleaned these sections every time through, while Young was relegated to a series of ones and a spot off the podium. Round·one Expert-class winner Todd Tucker continued his winning ways with an equally dominating performance in his class, beating second· place finisher Steve Deines by ]8 points. Even more impressive was Tuck· er's number of cleans: 19, compared to the nine of Deines or the 10 of third-place finisher Thomas Hedwall. After losing the tie breaker at round one, Dustin Hedwall found his way to the top spot in the Advanced class this week with a win over Women's Trial Des Nation hopeful Nicole Bradford. Riding a Gas Gas 200, Bradford beat Hedwall on cleans but lost out on points. Patrick Howie rounded out the podium. finishing two points and two cleans down on Bradford. Gas Gas pilot Marty Kulick led the youth movement that's currently making waves in the Intermediate division, triumphing over second-place finisher Tom Grant. by 14 points. Third-place finisher Bailey Tucker finished just two points behind Grant. High scores were the norm in this class on a very challenging course. The Amateur class featured tight competition, with six riders finishing within four points. Tom Klinker tied with Brian Anderson on points but pulled out the win by virtue of having two more cleans than Anderson. Jarrod Tilton and David Koerwitz tied for third, only a point behind Klinker and Anderson, with Tilton taking the spot on the tie breaker. Results (,SHIP: I. Keith Wineltlnd; 2. lach Clement; 3. When the gate dropped this time, Homsby absconded with the holeshot. Kinnemeyer was keeping the pace, but he just couldn't get close enough to make the pass. It was Wagner's tum to come through the pack for third. With all three riders tied with five points apiece, Hornsby took the overall with a 4-1 moto score. Man, the crowd really loved this class! In the 65cc class, Brandy Price scored a couple of runner-up moto finishes, behind Dakota Hacker (who has two sponsored rides this year: Plessinger Cycles on his 65, and Jones Power Sports on the Polini 50). On her KTM, Price worked hard as the day went on, coming through the pack with the crowd behind her all the way. Nick Laut, Bradley Ketterman and Scotty Hudgins rounded out the top five. In the 50cc Senior class, Hacker and Darren Walsh put on a riding seminar, as the two battled it out in both motos. Each took tums leading the pack, but when it mattered the most, on the last lap, it was Hacker in front and winning both motos, with Walsh a very close second. KTM-mounted Austin Walton finished third overall. In the ever-growing Senior division, Lowell Mason ted the Over 30 class from wire to wire in both motos. Jeff Pfaller won both Over 40 motos. Cole York was runner-up in both the Over 30 and Over 40 classes. In the Dash For Cash, Scott Plessinger battled it out with the new Plessinger Cycles recruit, Scotty Metz. With Metz pushing his new KTM to the limit, Plessinger showed the young pro a thing or two about how fast the boss is. Metz was coming off two AMA Supercross mains since joining the team, the 125cc at Indy and the 250cc at Daytona. "It's really cool to have a boss that can ride that fast," Metz said. Plessinger won both motos over his newest team rider. Plessinger looked awfully fast all day, winning both motos of the 250cc class. Mason took the runner-up position, with Chris Couch third overall. MX Park It's Happenin' at Haspin! Perris Raceway It Does Rain in Southern California Bv MIKE "SIR SMILEY" RVER PERRIS, CA, MAR. 23 Round three of the Perris Spring Series was scheduled for March 16, but torrential rains throughout the weekend caused its cancella· tion. Round three will be added to the final round on May 4, and either a double-points program or a three-moto format will replace the lost round. Visit www.PerrisRaceway.com for more information on the race format for the final round. Maxxis/Applied-backed Micky Griffin dropped in for a late start in the points tally, as he picked up a 1-1 win for the first-overall points. The No Fear-wearin', Spy Gogglessportin' CR pilot Cody Hertel tried running down Griffin in both motos and tallied a 2-2 score while keeping his distance from thirdoverall finisher (and second in the points chase) Anthony Bnuscella (3-3), on his ECC machine. A.J. Steinbach was a no·show at round four after taking a pair of second overalls at the first two rounds, while Bruscella gained points and the lead for his participation in this round. Wiseco·backed Frankie Salvatore put his machine out in front of the 125cc Schoolboy class in the decisive second moto to take the overall after finishing second to Mid Cities rider Brett Klein in moto one. Klein had a disastrous second moto and finished a disap· pointing seventh, which dropped him to fourth overall, ahead of Tyler O'Neill (6-3), who scored fifth overall. After placing fourth in moto one, Malins Pools rider Curtis Malins also stepped up his game in moto two for a sec· ond-place finish, behind Salvatore, which was good for second overall. Joey Dobson dropped to fourth in moto two after taking third in the first moto, but his score still earned him points valuing third overall. Sponsors take notice when a supported rider continues to improve his skills with each progressive ride. When your sponsor is Mom £, Dad, it would be impossible for that rider's accomplishments to go unnoticed and unmen· tioned among gatherings of family and friends for st>me time to come.
