CMA Bridgestone Pacific Coast Pro-Am Central Series Round 3: Little Dkie Raceway Cabin Fever By EDDIE GRAVEUNE MADERA, CA, MAR. 23 Due to cruel and unusual punishment from Mother Nature the previous weekend, Little Okie in Madera played host to round three of the Pacific Coast Pro·Am Central Series. The fourth round was supposed to have taken place on March 23, but very un-California-like rains washed out round three in laGrange. SO the schedule was backed up a week, and there were a bunch of motocrossers eager to get some track time and win some dealer dollars. That week off meant that just about everyone turned up for Little Ok ie, and it turned out to be a long day. Threatening clouds loomed low in the sky, but the racing went on and got done before any rain fell. The 65cc Novice class provided some close racing for the huge crowd to enjoy. The 65cc machines continue to develop, and the riders push them to limits that were unthinkable just a few years ago. Kyle Tigert established himself as the top gun by winning both motos, though several riders behind him had impressive outings as well. "Insane" James Culbertson rode his Suzuki to second in the opening race, followed by Gabriel Adame. Both riders gated well in the second mota, but it was Adame who crossed the line second that time_ Culbertson was right behind him but had to settle for third overall. Jessy Arthurs the only young lady in the class - rode very well herself, finishing fourth in both races and fourth overall. Tigert did his Novice-class performance one better in the 65cc X class. He won the single-moto event by beating all of the Intermediate-class riders and served notice that he'lI be moving up soon. The 85cc Beginner class had so many entries that it had to be split into two clivisions. The elite first division was won by .. J.B." Buller, who swept both motos. Finishing a strong second overall was the aforementioned Arthurs. "Miss Jessy" has been flying under the radar for a while, but she's been working hard and steadily improving her results. With an older brother serving as constant inspiration, there's no telling how fast this girl can get; it will be fun to witness, Michael Perretto rounded out the podium in the first division. Vincent Vasquez rode a Yamaha to victory in the second division, followed by Michael Martin and Brad Ely. Moving up to the big bikes, things were just as crowded. The 125cc Beginner class had to be split as well. Steven Hembree just moved up from the 85cc class but has taken to the full-sized machines quickly. He's already become a dominant force in the Beginner class, and his outing at Okie was no exception. He won both races over a solid crop of new talent. Wes Flippin gave it everything he could, going 2-2 on the day and finishing second overall. Brandon Krisell was third after a gritty 3-4 performance. The 250cc Pro class may have been a three-man affair, but the level of excitement didn't suffer. Jess Medley and Paul Temmerman rode closely through both matos, each looking for an edge. Medley came up with the answer on that particular day, as he squeaked out two wins and the overall. J.R. Archutowski followed them in third in both motos_ Temmerman came back by winning the 25-29 Intermediate/Expert contest over a pack of grizzled journeymen. Suzuki ace Steve Nelson actually won the first mota, but he fell out of contention when he had problems in the second. That opened the door for Temmer· man, who had put in a solid second-place performance in the opening mota; he rode his KTM 450 to victory in the second race, over Honda-mounted Johnny Souza. Bakersfield's Adam Hensley completed the top three. The Vet Beginner class continued to show good vital signs, with a full gate of riders in Madera. Jason Collins blew everyone away with a clean sweep of the action. His performance was so remarkable that the promoters decided to move him up immediately. Mike Dunnagan, who has been steadily improving since last summer, had a good day, going 2-2 for a second· place showing. Craig Heredia 48 APRIL 30, 2003' c u e • e nailed third overall with a 5·3 performance, while Joey Pistacchio and Bryan Custer also finished in the top five. Miraculously, everyone got their motos in before the weather did anything drastic. Califomia seemed to be in a pattern of great midweek weather, followed by weekend storms. With that in mind, everyone left with their fingers crossed for round four the following week. Little Okie Raceway Madera, California Results, March 23, 2003 (Round 31 50 FfT: J. Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit, Championship Division Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit, High Plains Division Rocky Mountain Enduro Circuit Rounds 3/212: Turkey Enduro Wilson Plucks Turkey Win By DAVID KLEIN TURKEY,TX,MAR.23 Michael Wilson pulled out the overall win at the Turkey Enduro. This race was another showdown between the Texas and Colorado riders. Wilson. a Texan, carded a seven and beat Coloradan Ron Schmelzle by a single point. "This was a great event," Wilson said. "My Sharp's Motosports YZ250 ran flawlessly today. I also want to thank MSR for their support. It feels real good to beat the Colorado guys in Texas. They usually return the favor when I go up there." Schmelzle was one of the Team USA T rophy Team riders at the ISDE in the Czech Republic last year. "I rode okay: Schmelzle said, "but lost the race in the last test for the second week in a row. There was great traction on the trails, but I would have liked more and longer tests to separate everyone. This was an excellent race, and I really enjoy coming down to the TSCEC races. The locals are sure hard to beat, though. I would like to thank my sponsors, which include Offroadchampions.com, Eurosport, Shift, Silkolene, FMF, Durelle Racing, Colorado Powersports, Bridgestone. Smith. E-Line. Steahly, Renthal and Emig Racing." Also scoring an eight was Colorado fast guy Kelby Pepper. Mark Faulk, the winner of the last round, clocked a 10, as did Mark Thompson, one of the Texans who also went to the ISDE last year. "That was one cool race," Thompson said. "[ am gonna be ready for the next round in Post." The Turkey Enduro was once again preceded on Saturday by a Gran Prix race. The dust could be seen swirling in the air for miles during that race, but at about 5 o'clock, the rain started, and there was literally a river flowing down Main Street within minutes. Some riders were worried about Sunday, but Carl Clapsaddle, one of the race's organizers, was overjoyed_ "This may be the best trail conditions for the Turkey Enduro in years: Clapsaddle said, and he was absolutely correct. With minimal dust and great traction everywhere, it was an excellent ride. There were more than 100 rows of riders, and everyone was thrilled with the trail conditions. The course left town following dirt roads and then turned into trails with well·placed checks and resets to get everyone back on time. There was ample opportunity for riders to enjoy the scenery between the test sections. Everyone followed the same course, with the long·course riders making one special test loop more_ The race ended with less than 80 ground miles on a final timed lap on the GP course. Young hotshoe Cole Kirkpatrick clocked an amazing 11 to win the overall A class. Fortunately, he did not share the fate of his father, Richard, who seemed to have found the deepest mudhole on the course. Ken Giles made the trip over from New Mexico and won the Open A class, while his riding partner Joseph Gutierrez had to settle for second in the 200cc A class, behind Cole. In the 250cc B class, Lacy Jones parked her trials bike for a weekend to claim fifth with a score of 24. Kelton Miller won the Small-Wheel Minibike class by six points. Jordan Chambliss put in the winning short·course ride, clocking an eight. Vernon Markworth made this his first enduro of the year and as the "youngster" won the Over 60 class. Jud Cowley won the overall age classes with a 10, beating TSCEC Hall of Fame inductee Jack Henery on tie breakers. The combined TSCEC and RMEC ride brought out record numbers of riders this year. It is clear the level of competition has been raised by this friendly rivalry. The next round is scheduled for Post, Texas.
