Florida Motocross Series Round 1: Dade City Raceway Pedrero Pounds Dade City Bv CRAIG AND ANGElA JOHNSON DADE CITY, FL, MAR. 23 Matthew Pedrero put it to his competition at round one of the fifth annual Florida Motocross Series. Pedrero pounded out wins at Dade City Raceway to win three classes. Those wins came in the 125cc C, 250cc C and 16-24 classes. The weather played a part in the day's racing action as well. A light rain fell in the early morning, making the track a little wet. The track began drying out halfway through the first matos, but then the rain decided to start up again. The track began to get soupy and rutted, so the races were called after the first set of motos. In the first class Pedrero ran, the Kawasaki pilot started out front. The other 250cc C riders tried keeping up, but Pedrero began pulling away from the gel-go. Following him were Jimmie Hildreth, Brad Garritson, Aaron Cone and Travis Norvell. Cone lost fourth to Norvell. The riders in second through fourth pulled away a little, and Cone got some company from Brandon Buckingham, in sixth. By the halfway mark, the top five were running only seconds apart. The pressure got to Hildreth, and the Honda rider fell in the sand horseshoe. Garritson got held up, and Norvell went by into second. Garritson remained in third, and Cone moved to fourth. Pedrero was now leading by a wide margin, and Norvell stretched it out in second. The fight was now for third, and on the last lap. Garritson tried to hold off Cone, but Marlin Davis and Opie Shumaker made it a four-way battle. That was the order when the checkers fell. In 125cc C action, Cone led while Pedrero started third. By the halfway flag, Pedrero had moved to second and was pressuring Cone for the lead. Pedrero passed him and pulled away for the win. Cone kept second. Justin Csanadi moved up to third after starting seventh. Csanadi didn't last long in third, as Shumaker and Troy Snyder put him back to fifth. In the combined 16-24 and Over 25 classes, Pedrero shot into the lead, followed by Riley Hall. The two riders stretched out a lead on the first lap, with Hall taking the point. Hall fell after the completion of lap one, handing the lead back to Pedrero. Pete Aceto took over second, with Russell Clay hounding him. Pedrero ran uncontested for the win, while Clay got by Aceto. Jason Dodds finished fourth, and Garritson rounded out the top five. Camden Cruz pulled the holeshots in both the 125cc B and Youth (12-15) classes, but Dean Dyess Jr. pulled out the wins. Dyess came around in first at the completion of lap one, with Cruz second in the Youth (12-15) class. Cruz fell, handing Dyess a comfortable lead. Brandon Abell moved to second, pulling away from Danny Weyer in third. Zach Fiorina finished fourth after starting second, and Snyder finished fifth. In the 125cc B class, Cruz succumbed to Dyess and Abell. Those two pulled out to finish one-two. Cruz did much better, holding on to third, ahead of Casey Gulick and Weyer. Two other double-class winners on the day were Derek Hall and Tyler Tiffany. The young Suzuki rider, Derek, won the 65cc Open class ahead of Cody Smith, and his win in the 65cc (9-1 I) class was ahead of Wilfreda Guzman. Tiffany won the 85cc (14-15) class ahead of Gary Cavanagh. The Supermini class came down to who would be the fastest minibike rider of the day. Tiffany took the win over 85cc (12·13) class winner Max Rash and 85cc (7 -11) class winner Jesse Freeman. J.B. Ballard led the Open Money class to the first turn. Following the Honda rider were Ronnie Monk, Clay, Dodds and Aceto. Ballard checked out and seemed to have the race in hand. The race was now for second, as Clay and Dodds pressured Monk. A couple of laps into the race, Ballard let his guard down and sampled the wet soil, dropping to fifth. Ballard quickly switched on the afterburners and made it back to second by the last lap. Ballard closed quickly on Monk, who tried holding the charging rider at bay. Ballard cut to the inside in the whoops and took the lead away. Monk tried retaliating, but time ran out. Ballard took the win. over Monk, and Dodds moved to third. Clay fell on the last lap, handing Aceto fourth. Dade City Raceway Dade City, Florida Results: March 23, 2003 (Round 1 of 141 65 BEG; 1. B V ClAV LIGHT TACOMA, WA, MAR. 28-29 National Arenacross regulars Brad Hagseth and Ryan Huffman were the dominant players at the final round of Clear Channel Entertainment's Regional Arenacross Series, pocketing a substantial chunk of the Professional purse during the Pro and Amateur portion of a doubleheader held at the series' largest venue, the Tacoma Dome. Hagseth. a member of the potent Canadjan-based Richmond Kawasaki squad, posted eye' e 250cc Pro main-event wins on both nights. The rider from nearby Centralia, Washington, appeared to have shrugged off the late-season injuries that had haunted him during the National Arenacross Series this season, beating Northwesterners Huffman and Ryan Terlecki on Friday night. On Saturday. Hagseth had Jim Neese, the 2003 Regional Arenacross Champion, to deal with, although in the end the win went Hagseth's way. Huffman gar· nered the final podium position. The 125cc Pro class wasn't a one-rider domination, as was the case in the 250cc nevvs APRIL 23, 2003 69
