into second, and Hodges had worked his way up to third after a poor start. By the third lap, Teddy had a huge lead, while Hodges had passed Raubs for second and had begun to pull away. McDowell followed Raubs in fourth, and Wenck was in fifth. Teddy continued to cruise to an easy win, followed by Hodges in second. Raubs held off a hard·charging McDowell for third. In the second moto, Hodges got a much better start and ended up with the holeshot. Teddy WliS again in second and pressuring for the lead. Hodges was able to hold him off until the start of the second lap, when Teddy took the lead. This time. Teddy found it a little harder to pull away, as Hodges stayed right with him for a lap. On the third lap, Teddy began to pull a small lead over Hodges, who had a large lead over third-placed Raubs. Teddy continued to cruise to the checkered flag, with Hodges second and Raubs finishing third. Cody Gilmore also looked very prepared, as he cruised to easy wins in the 125cc B, 250cc B and Schoolboy classes. Ben Brommel dominated the 80s with big wins in the 80ce Open and eOce Senior classes. Meanwhile, Week, Goodwin and Wilson were involved in a wild brawl for second. Wilson made a fabulous move at the doubles after the finish line to leapfrog into third. Out in front, Lamay had it on cruise control, winning moto two and the overall 85cc Stock (7-11) title. Wilson, with two solid seconds, took second overall, and Goodwin led Martinez and Week in the final results. Race 14 was definitely a "mixed bag," with ultrafast Open Pros battling superstars-in-themaking Intermediates, with 250cc Novices and Beginners thrown in to follow the field. Novice Brian Fowler opened some eyes by stealing the opening-round holeshot, ahead of Suzuki flash Davi Millsaps and Pro rider Kevin Roberts. Millsaps took over, while Open Pro racer Raymond Carvalho came on quickly to zap Fowler for second in the canyon. Millsaps rolled on to the win, Carvalho nailed down second, and Roberts fought back to third. Factory-backed Intermediate Millsaps, the "next big thing," roared off the line to deny Fowler a second holeshot. Carvalho and Roberts rapidly muscled their way into second and third. Millsaps was rolling again, but Car· valho closed in the late stages to keep him honest. Roberts finished a close third, leading Tallahassee, Florida's Chase Revell and local ace Patrick Provencher through the pipes. Casey McDoweU: 5. Levi Quandahl. 2SO B: 1. Cody Glimore; 2. Although it's just a local race, the two "previews" usually draw racers from many states who are eager to get a feel for the track and race against some of the competition that they'll be facing in the World Mini event. The 85cc Stock (7 - 11) class, which always seems to attract overachievers and uJtrataJents, was loaded with heavy hitters (as were most other classes). The pride of Castaic, California, Michael Truglia, ripped the holeshot as race action commenced, leading (KTM). 50 OPEN: 1. Caden Hadley (St.a.); 2. Cody Thomas (Cob): 3. Jeffrey W"L11son (K'TM): ... Week passed early for the lead but then ate it at the big doubles, giving Lamay just one pass to make to take the lead. He took it, and Pine Valley, California, ace Trevor Reis charged up to second. Truglia was fending off thrusts from Airdrie's Dean Wilson and Sun City, Califomia, leadfoot Jake Canada. Lamay went to the whip, and when Reis took a close look at the finish· line area's dirt, Wilson and Canada suddenly found themselves fighting over second. Lamay set a torrid pace for the remainder of the race, winning with ease. Wilson nipped Canada, and River· side, California's Nick Paluzzi led the recov· ered Reis through the checkers. Lamay blasted out in front of Week and local star Ronnie Goodwin as race two exploded into action. Wilson and Rimrock, Arizona, Las Vegas Motor Speedway: Carlos Gonzalez (70) nabs the holeshot ahead 01 eventual winner Davl Millsaps (118), Patrick Provencher (818) and the rest of the Schoolboy class at Super Sunday One In Las Vegas. ""'·5Z oPEN (70/90/110): U.GRANGE. CA, MAR. 23 "Blue skies, warm weather and sunshine" would be the best way to describe Saturday's practice at laGrange. My, what a difference a day makes: "Cioudy, cold and really wet" would best describe conditions for racing on Sunday. But who said Californians can't ride in the mud? Just as at the previous round, some riders really stood out in the mud and even made it look easy - riders such as Aaron Strong (in the 250cc Beginner class), Rondi De Jesus (in the 125cc Novice class) and Jennifer Burton (in the 50cc Beginner class). These riders won their respective classes in the deep mud of laGrange. Once again. the single-moto format was used, so there would be no second chance to try to better your finish. The Kawasaki-mounted Strong proved up to the challenge and dominated the 250cc Beginner class from start to finish. The Mutant Motorsports Parts and Accessories·backed rider was one of the few who kept the bike on two wheels the entire race. While others were having problems and taking multiple "mud samples," Strong kept on charging forward and increased his lead with each lap. Suzuki rider Butch Costa gave chase in second. Costa was keeping Strong honest until the halfway point, when the track started to get the best of Costa and he started dropping back. With Strong leading and Costa maintaining a distant second. Honda rider Kellen Parker was making his way toward the front. Parker was almost last on the first lap, but he was making up for it with a steady pace through the mud. Before it was all over. Parker actually made it ali the way up to third. At the checkers, only the winner, Strong, and second-placed Costa had completed the seven laps. Third·place finisher Parker actually came off the track right behind Strong but was a lap down. Fourth place on the day went to Yamaha rider Scott Larson of Redwood City. At the start of the 125cc Novice race, De Jesus set the pace early aboard his YZ250F. De Jesus was trying different lines to try to avoid some of the really muddy areas, and it paid off; his lead was visibly increasing with each lap. Second off the start was his fellow Yamaha rider Mark Abrew, who was also riding a four-stroke, and third was Travis McRae, on a two-stroke Yamaha. By the second lap, the race was already getting interesting when another Yamaha rider, Daniel Pearson, came from fourth and got by McRae and !'.brew to take over the second spot. Abrew did not let Pearson gain too much of an advantage and hung close. The top four remained in the same order until the white-flag lap, when Abrew had apparently had enough and made a charge to take back second. At the finish. De Jesus took the win with a comfortable lead. Abrew was second, Pearson was third, and McRae was fourth. In the 50cc Beginner class, Jennifer Burton, on the little KTM, was having her day in the mud. Burton survived the track and paddled her way to first overall. Even with a coupie of falls, Burton stayed focused and never lost her lead. Second went to Tommy Jordan, on a Honda, and third overall was Gunnar Biersdorff. aboard a Polini. All the 50cc riders who competed on this day deserve a pat on the back for taking on the track under these conditions. In the Pro ranks, Honda rider Buffalo Saito took the win on the 250. Second place on the day went to another Honda rider, Danny Bar· ber. The final podium spot went to a young speedster out of Brentwood, Nick Davis, who was racing a Suzuki. Davis was definitely putting in some fast lap times, but falls kept him from reaching the front. Davis had his moment in the 125cc Pro class, taking the win over Yamaha rider Tony Wolf. laGrange SVRA laGrange. California Results: March 23, 2003 IRound 3) 50 BEG: 1. JeMlfer Bunon (KTM): 2.
