St George Motocross Track r----,--------------,-~~...,.-----,-,-"""'~-,-~-,---,-_____,> St. George Motocross Track '" « '" o '" ~ Covington Had It Covered '" w ~ S! o z By DICK GOODWIN ST. GEORGE, UT, MAR. 15 Racing in the big Over 30 Junior class, Lehi, Utah's Randy Covington conquered the entire field twice but just barely, edging out Dave Green in the first half and nipping Todd Cook in the finale. Snake eyes are still snake eyes, however, and will get you that overall trophy every time. KTM-mounted Daren Brooks blitzed the start, leading Alpine, Utah, hotshoe Doug Clements and Kawasaki stud Richard Oliver through the first tum. When the wild shuffling for positions settled down, Covington had the point. with Oliver and Cook in close pursuit. Cook went down in a comer, leaving Clements to join Covington and Oliver in a tight scrap for the lead. Green, with a mediocre start, was making his moves mid race, raging up into second and putting heavy pressure on Covington. At the finish, Covington and Green flew across the line in tandem. but Covington's front tire must have been bigger, as he took race one. Clements edged Cary Blake for third. Clements, Oliver and Covington all battled for the second-half holeshot, with Clements coming out on top, Oliver quickly took over the lead and led for a lap. Covington ripped past Clements in the finish· line area and set oul after Oliver: he caught him on lap two and stuffed his way past in a corner. When Clements dropped it in the middle section, Cook inherited third and started to surge toward the front. He zapped Oliver at the finish-line tabletop, and now Covington had a different rider breathing down his neck in this mota. Covington hung on once again and survived another squeaker. Close calls, both, but two victories nevertheless, and the Over 30 Junior title was his. Confusion reigned behind him, but Green topped Cook, Clements and Brooks when the smoke cleared. Another racer having a fairly good day was Kappy Kealamakia. With two class wins - and only an untimely crash keeping him from can· tending for a third trophy - Kealamakia obviously packed his A game in the bag this morning. In the 125cc Intermediate class, Scott Theobald charged off the gate to lead Kealamakia and Ryan Mehr. Justin Fraughton nosed his way up into third, as Theobald was opening a lead on the field. Theobald looked strong until he stalled it in a tight corner and dropped to third. This left Kealamakia and Fraughton fighting bar to bar and way out in front. The brawl lasted the entire race, with Kealarnakia edging Fraughton at the wire by a razor-thin margin. Chase Nelson battled his way forward to nip Theobald for third. Kealamakia wasted the field at the start of the second stanza, with Mehr and Nick Mofford nipping at his heels. When Kealamakia Hacking Coughs Up a Win ~ o Bv BOBBIE MARTIN AND DICK GOODWIN '" ST. GEORGE, UT, MAR. 16 Dylan Hacking parlayed ferocious racing· and a little luck - into the 65cc Open titie at round four of the Utah Sport Riders Association Motocross Series, held at the St. George Motocross Track on March 16. When action opened up, heavy favorite Levii Hall absconded with the holeshot. Hacking was hanging right with him, and he made a first-lap pass. Bowdy Ruesch and Rowdy Williamson were also blasting along at the front of the pack. Hacking and Hall were bar to bar for a lap until Hall was able to take over for good. Hacking stayed close, and Williamson and Dusty Humphries were now waging war for third. Hall pulled out a close win, over Hacking, and Humphries Jed Williamson and Ruesch through the pipes. Hacking, making a bid for the overall, swooped out in front of Hall, Williamson, Humphries and the rest of the field as the second half exploded into action. Hacking was pushing hard, but Hall was relentiess, dogging him, and finally Hall made the pass at the end of the first lap. Hall and Hacking stayed close and opened up a little lead on third-placed Humphries and the rest of the pack. Just when it looked golden for Hall, a bobble on the white-nag lap gave Hacking the lead, the win and the overall 65cc Open titie. Hall recovered for second, and Humphries and Rex Tullio followed him through the checkers. Hall earned second overall, besting Humphries, Tullio and Ruesch when the final results were tallied. The oldest class for racers who still race hard and intensely are the studs in the Over 40 class. You have to have been shaving for a long time to line up on this gate. Paul Bradshaw roared off the gate to lead Mike Spencer, Bill Clemson and Rick Tapp as the "gramps" fired up. Spencer was on it, pushing and shoving until he finally fought his way through to first. Tapp bullied his way up into third, and the fight was on at the front of the pack. Spencer edged Bradshaw for second, and Clemson nipped Randy Reed for fourth. Tapp nailed the hoieshot in moto two, leading Clemson, Spencer, Reed, Lonny Mackintosh and the rest out onto the course. Spencer was on fire early on, passing first Clemson and then zapping Tapp for the lead. Tapp and Clemson held close, as Mackintosh and Ken Martin were engaged in a brawl for fourth. Spencer nashed through the pipes for his second straight win and the Over 40 crown. Tapp nailed down second and second overall. Clemson pulled in next, leading Mackintosh, Martin and Reed in the final results. ~ ~ '!1 '" u '" >'" o w ~ o '" ~ St. George Motocross Track: Dave Green (848) was the winner in the Over 25 Junior class at Utah Sport Riders Association Motocross Series in St. George on Saturday, bobbled, the pack pounced. Steven Alba took over the lead. Kealamakia came back with a vengeance, powering past Mofford and then grabbing the lead for good on lap three. Kealamakia led Alba across the finish line for the win and the overall. Nelson led Mofford, Alba and Theobald in the final overall results. Results P/W SHAFT: I. Selby Oldroyd (Yllm): 2.
