Rock Fight!
.
By MIKE SUWVAN
Mesquite Motocross Track: Michael
Gangi was the 65cc Beginner winner at
round four of the Casino Towns MX Series
in Mesquite, Nevada.
Wyoming's Cooper Palmer out onto the
course. Ginden made a quick pass to secure
the lead. while St. George. Utah's Kyler Larsen
began to pressure Palmer for third. Ginden
stretched his lead, while Mello remained firmly
in second. Larsen worked his way past Palmer
for third midrace to set the finishing order:
round one to Ginden.
Ginden didn't waste any time in the second
half, squirting out in front of Mello and Patrick
Hinners. Ginden and Mello were running onetwo, but Larsen fought through, and Shane
Lant joined up to form a tight. four-man pack
at the front. Late in the race, Ginden pulled
away for his second straight win and the overall 65cc (7 -9) Stock crown, besting Lant, Cole
Nanney and Mason Rodriguez. Runner-up
Mello topped the 65cc (10· 11) boys, outdistancing Larsen, Hinners and Palmer.
Craig Sawyer was the man in the 250cc
Novice class. using a good second-moto effort
to claim the title. He smoked the start of race
one, leading Jason Burton, Kenny Martin and
Jeremy Newman among the Novices. Martin
was the man on the move, ripping past Burton
and then dogging the leader. Martin got past
on the white-flag lap and flashed across with
the moto-one win. Sawyer led Burton and
Newman through the pipes.
Martin burst off the gate to lead the Novice
class in round two. Sawyer and Burton were
close behind. A good day went south in a
hurry on lap two when Martin took a soil sample, handing Sawyer the lead, the race-two
win, and the come-From-behind overall 250cc
Novice title. Martin recovered to finish third,
which was enough to earn him second overall,
ahead of Burton and Newman.

GILMER, TX, MAR. 23
Ask any kid, and he'll tell you that sometimes
the best way to settle the score is with a good,
old-fashioned rock fight. And that's just what
round two of the Moose·sponsored Texas
Cross Country Racing Association's series
turned out to be, as 700 racers took to the
rocky hills of Bamwell Mountain Recreational
Area in the East Texas town of Gilmer.
The II-mile course was laid out with the
help of eight-time AMA National Enduro and
ISDE Champion Dick Burleson, who was on
hand for the weekend and was honored with a
TCCRA lifetime membership. Burleson and his
fellow course designers from Thumper Racing
and Lucky Dog Promotions laid out a route
that took riders through a twisted trail of boul·
der-strewn hills, off-camber slopes, tight
woods, and gnarled two-wheel tracks.
"This is the most difficult course I've seen,"
said Dave Sabella, an Over 35 Amateur rider,
echoing a sentiment shared by many TCCRA
members, "It had just about everything you
can imagine to test your skills, but I feel like
I'm a better rider for the experience."
Burleson, who personaliy helped many
riders get up the rocky hilis during Saturday's
open practice session, said he could tell many
of the riders were not used to the difficult
course layout thrown at them on Barnwell
Mountain.
"Riders should develop skills and not just
rely on pure horsepower to get around the
course," Burleson said. "It's best to have
courses that are more technically challenging
and not superfast."
Of course, not everyone had trouble with
the challenging layout. Sean Reddish, 32, kept
his season's start perfect with a second
straight win, taking control of the Pro class in
the 44-mile event aboard his Two Wheel
World Honda CRF450R. Cody Harris also rode
his Yamaha to a second consecutive win in
the Open Expert class, as did Tracy Taz Kisor
in the Ladies Expert class, aboard her Honda.
It was Shane Fortner showing the way on his
Yamaha in the 250cc Expert class. Brian
Barnes on his Suzuki in the I25cc Expert
class, and young Taylor Thomas winning the
Mini Expert class on his Yamaha.
"Anybody who earned a trophy at this
event proved they can ride at the front on any
of the TCCRA courses,' said promoter Gary
Hazel of Thumper Racing. "This is a very diffi·
cult place to ride, but it makes a top finish that
much more satisfying."
Burleson, who was attending his first
TCCRA event, praised the 32-year·old club for
its ability to thrive (as was evidenced by the
tremendous rider turnout at each of the
events) in a state where public land access is
so limited,
"Texas has so little public land, but offroad racing is flourishing," Burleson said.
"This is a great modei for the rest of the country."
