FMX East's Jeff Winstead was also riding sore after a crash in practice left him with his own tire tracks down his back. He was too sore on Friday to want to make the main. so he purposely threw Dead Sailors in his qualifiers to finish ninth. He felt a little better the next day and finished seventh in the main. Ballard, Perebijnos Clear First Hurdle Foster's First, Miller's Millionth GREENVILLE, SC, MAR. 14-15 Runner-up qualifier Brian "Bubbs" Foster has been a threat to win on many weekends in the first half of the 2003 IFMA season. On Friday night, at the Greenville, South Carolina, round of IFMA Freestyle Motocross action (presented by XM Satellite Radio), it came down to Foster and another rider who has been getting closer and closer to his first win, Derek Burlew. Both riders rode flawlessly and extended big tricks. but a perfectly executed McMetz-to-no-hander landing without checking the bars. plus a Stage Dive (a doublegrab-to-no-hander landing without checking the bars) and a big one-handed Supernac secured a three·tenths-of·a-point victory for Bubbs. Saturday wasn't so kind to Foster, as the Moto XXX rider finished sixth. The 2000 IFMA champ, Dustin Miller, riding for DC Shoes and Fox, who had decided to sit out the previous night due to illness, came back to edge out Jake Windham by twotenths of a point on Saturday. Windham spent much of practice on Saturday working on a new trick, and by nightfall the crowd got to see no-handed Supermans. No one else was trying that trick. Burlew showed winning form on both nights. Aside from a slight case job on one landing and having to abort a no-handed landing on Friday, Burlew appeared to be in top form. Sidewinders, Big Whips, and a switched one-handed Supercan headlined the Troy Lee Designs rider's list of tricks. One could Friday OjA: 1. Brion FOSler (Hon): 2. Derek Burlew (Yam): 3. South Carolina Results: March 14-15.2003 BY CRAIG AND ANGELA JOHNSON REDDICK, FL. MAR. 14-16 The first hurdle that riders planning to go to the Amateur National Championship at Loretta Lynn's Dude Ranch was the Southeast Area Qualifier held at MX of Marion County. The top eight riders were guaranteed spots at the Southeast Regional Qualifiers to be held in June. More than 650 riders from Ig states competed for those spots. Friday's practice sessions drew more than 400 of those 650. Even with that many riders, the track was in great shape all three days, especially after all the rain the state of Florida has had in the last month. Two of the fastest riders on the weekend took top honors in the A and Pro Sport classes. Paul Perebijnos won the 125cc A Stock and Pro Sport classes with four motos wins, while Jessie Ballard was the only one to win three classes, topping the 250cc/Open A Stock class and sweeping the 250/0pen A Pro Sport and Four-Stroke classes. Perebijnos manhandled the 125cc classes. On Saturday, the Yamaha four-stroke rider ran away with the 125cc A Stock win. Donald McGourty, New Hampshire's Paul Lamb, and Georgia's Karl Scott finished both motos in second through fourth, respectively. On Sunday, Lamb finished runner-up to Perebijnos each time out. The 250cc/Open A classes were a little bit more exciting, as Perebijnos went up against Ballard. In the first 250cc/Open A Stock mota, Perebijnos beat out Ballard for the win, with Julien Berchoux finishing third. Timothy Bantle got fourth, over Chris Sherman. Perebijnos did not fare as well the second time out, finishing 10th. Baliard took the moto win and the overall. Lamb came back to finish second after a disastrous first mota. Berchoux took third, and hometown hero Travis Blackburn placed fourth, ahead of Randy Jackson. Perebijnos only managed two seconds in the Pro Sport class, behind Ballard, on Sunday. describe his second-place finish on Friday night as comparable to kissing one's sister. He then finished fourth on Saturday, less than a full point behind Miller's winning score of 92.5. Azonic's Windham was the top qualifier on Friday night. His main-event runs were perfect, from good extension on his tricks all the way to smooth landings every time. Windham does some of the biggest Rock Solids, nofooted Nac Nacs. and Rulers in the business. He finished a tenth of a point behind Burlew, with a 9 I .1, on Friday, and two-tenths of a point behind Miller on Saturday. Ogio's Matt Buyten was also on his game the entire weekend. His run had its own flare, with a smooth base jump, but a slight overshot of one landing roughed up his routine on Friday. He had to settle for fourth on Friday, and then he moved up a spot to round out the podium on Saturday. LBZ's Cody Elkins finished fifth, just two-tenths of a point behind Buyten, on Friday. Highlighting Elkins' run was a Superman Seat Grab with a Whip. He was throwing his bike sideways with his grab hand. Elkins' fifth-place score was less than a full point behind Foster's winning score, and he just missed out on the main on Saturday, finishing ninth. On Friday, Darin Connet beat out Ronnie Renner, who was struggling with a sore shoulder following a crash while performing for television the previous week. Renner wasn't planning on doing anything more than a jump or two, but he toughed it out and rode anyway. He improved on Saturday with a fifth-place finish, while Connet finished eighth on Saturday. Down on the "little" end of the spectrum, the 50cc classes had some great racing action as weiI. Donald Diperna grabbed the lead of the first 51cc (7-8) moto, ahead of Kody Ketchum, Brandon Slane, Blake Grimsiey and Jett Johnson. Diperna and Ketchum eventually pulled out to take first and second, respectively, at the checkered flag. Slane pulled out in third early but lost his lead in the closing stages. Grimsley, Johnson and Austin Root had pulied up behind Slane by the last lap, but no one could make a pass. After a not-sa-good finish in the first mota, Tyler Albertson fought for the lead with Diperna for the first lap of mota two. Diperna made the decision to get the lead coming away from the woods. Diperna pulled out and romped away with the win. Albertson had his hands full with Slane, fighting for second, but Albertson kept Slane at bay for the runner-up position. Austin Cole started seventh and worked his way up to fourth at the finish. Root started weli back in the pack but moved up to round out the top flve. In the first 5lcc (4-6) moto, Hunter Baker got the holeshot and took the win about two seconds ahead of Zach Dechaine. Hunter Breland got third after battling with Bodie Cocangelo, Coleman Martin and Cody Merrick. Martin got the worst end of the deal. as he had worked up to third after being at the tail end of the four riders. On the last lap, Martin slipped, falling back to seventh. Cocangelo finished fourth after leading the foursome. Merrick was fifth. Dechaine absconded with the lead in moto two and never looked back. Baker was second but just couldn't make up the time lost in the first couple of laps. The same four fought over third once again. Breland pulled out a few bikeiengths, but the other three reeled him in. Martin started at the end of the four again; this time, Martin passed the other three and stayed there to the finish. Merrick briefly got by Breland for fourth, but the two ended up switching places again. >- .. w ~ u >w o >- m o .... o '" ~ Silo Center: Jake Windham's 3-2 score was the most consistent of the weekend at the Greenville, South Carolina, round of IFMA Freestyle Motocross action_ 60 APRIL 16. 2003' eye I e n e vv s Motocross of Marion County: Jessie Ballard was the only rider to win three classes in Reddick, Florida_
