AMA District 37 Desert Championship Series Round 5: Huntington Beach MC Triple Euro Scrambles Brad, ley Triples at the Triple By KANDY THORNTON JOHNSON VALLEY, CA, MAR. 8-9 The Huntington Beach Motorcycle Club decided to give District 37 Desert points mongers a rare chance to earn three sets of race points all in one weekend. Their triple European Scrambles format had riders racing once on Saturday and twice on Sunday. HBMC set up four different courses in Johnson Valley that averaged 10 to 13 miles in length and covered a wide variety of terrain. The weather was per· feet, with sunny skies and slight breezes that helped keep the dust off the courses. Sean Bradley was like a kid in an ice cream shop, ordering up a huge triple scoop he walked away with all three wins in his division. Bradley dominated the Vet (Over 30) Expert 250cc class on his Ridgecrest Motorcycle Co./Moose/ProRev Yamaha. His main competition came from Vet Open pilots Paul Shafer and Paul Krause. who were waging war to see who would overall the Vet division. Bradley took the overall on Saturday and in the last race on Sunday, while Shafer pulled off the overall win in Sunday's first Vet race. "I pulled the holeshot off the bomb in the last race on Sunday," Bradley stated, "but Shafer got by me, and we traded the lead back and forth severai times on the first lap before I was finally able to pull away for good." Shafer made his own triple play, winning the Vet Open division for all three races. American Honda rider Steve Hengeveld was also having some fun in the sun, racking up three impressive victories in the Open Expert division. Hengeveld was the front-runner in each race that had the Open, 250cc, Four-Stroke and 200cc classes running together. taking the overall and class wins in all three races. Mike Childress finished the weekend with three second·place sets of points in the Open Expert division. Childress showed Hengeveld the wheel on his Team Green/BRP/Goat/Race Tech Kawasaki a few times but was unable to make the pass. "I got the holeshot off the bomb on the last race on Sunday," Childress recalled, "but Hengeveld passed me, and I got stuck in his dust. J tried to catch him in the valleys, but we were just so evenly paced, I couldn't pass in the dust. My favorite course this weekend was Course D, which mixed in some technical sections with the fast, open valleys. This was a great weekend of racing!" KTM jockey Paul Krause ran away with his own triple crown by taking the checkers first in the Four-Stroke Expert division. Krause was able to keep his Malcolm Smith Motorsports/ Bridgestone/FMF 525 ahead of three-time runner·up Allan Laframboise, who finished just behind Krause on his HYR Yamaha in this tripleheader. Kevin Hasten was another three· peat winner, in the Senior (Over 40) 250cc Expert class. Hasten was untouchable, racking up win after win in his division. Then he decided to iet it all hang out with the young guns and entered the 250cc Expert class on Saturday afternoon after racing earlier in the day. Hasten powered his Moose/Torco Oil/Montclair Yamaha to a home-run victory when he edged out Luke Dodson and his TwoT rick/VSK/FMF Suzuki and rode away with his fourth win of the weekend. Matt Shook was clearly the dominating presence in the Senior (Over 40) Open Amateur division. Shook was shakin' on his XR650 all weekend long. and he finished at least five places ahead of the competition during all three races. The Women's Amateur division triple· play award went to Kawasaki rider Arnie Mann. She was impressive in her three in-class wins and improved her overall finishes in each successive race. Susana Jones finished second in the Women's Amateur division aboard her KTM 200. Anna Joe Segale was untouchable in the Women's Expert division and added three first-place sets of points to her already impressive lead in this division. The Senior (Over 40) Open Novice class had its own three-time winner. Rob Myerly was a blur off the bomb run in all three races and racked up three sets of first· place points for the weekend. The Magnum (Over 50) 250cc-class points triple~dipper was Keith Jones, aboard his Sio Plastering/ESR Gas Gas. Jones is currently the points leader in this division, and he added some more ammo to his 2003 war 0·200 EX: I. K~n Knight (KTM); 2. BJ'f!tt Saunders (Kaw); 3. Shafer was able to take the checkers first on his Kawasaki three times over the weekend. Pulling off three races in one weekend is phenomenal, and Huntington Beach MC had all four courses running smoothly throughout the weekend. The ability to eam three sets of points in one weekend has the potential to shake things up in each division's overall standings as the District 37 Desert Series heads toward the halfway point.
