It will be interesting to see how well Jacqueline Ross will do at the Regional and at the Nationals. The up-and-coming speedster rode away with both Women's classes with double-moto wins. In the 80-1 05cc class, Ross beat out the "Ashleys" - Fioleh and Jackson - both times out. In the 105-and-Up class, Ross finished ahead of Kirsten Banka and Dyanna Conner each moto. The Florida Winter Olympics champion came all the way from Michigan to secure spots at the Regional. Dominic Izzi won both motos of the 105cc Supermini class, ahead of Kyle Keylon and Max Rash each time out. Then he took a 2-1 score for the overall in the 85cc Stock (12-13) class, ahead of Colten Maynard (1-3). IFMA Freestyle Motocross BJJ Center BJJ Canter Birmingham, Alabama Results: March 14-15, 2003 Chris Dennison just missed out on the main on both nights and had to settle for two ninths. FMX East rider Greg Hartman gave everyone a good scare on 'both nights. During Friday night's main, he lost traction and then hooked up toward the top of the ramp. He looped out, let go, and his body crashed into the landing. He walked away, but he went down again on Saturday in qualifying while trying a no-handed landing. He was slammed to the ground and carried off on a stretcher. He spent a day in the hospital and was then released. '''''''' a /A: I. Kenny Bartram (KTM): 2. Beeu Bamburg (Hon): 3. MAR. 14-15 KTM's "Cowboy" Kenny Bartram was unstoppable in at the Birmingham round of IFMA Freestyle Motocross action (presented by XM Satellite Radio), as he continued to stretch his points lead in his run at the 2003 IFMA title. Bartram crashed in practice while trying a difficult combo, but he rode through the pain and completely hid it in his riding. His Whips were still upside·down, his no-handed Whips were still flat. and all of his other tricks were as big as ever. Fox Racing's Beau Bamburg scored a close second on Friday night, missing Bartram's score by two-tenths of a point. Bamburg's Whips are like no others'. He gets so inverted, almost upside-down, and then, before touchdown, the back end is past the front end, with the front end way too low. Somehow, he lands these. Bamburg couldn't keep the flow on Saturday night and messed up in the main after a jump or two. Alpinestars rider Drake McElroy was on deck, and Bamburg motioned for Drake to join him in a train. The two put on a great show together, timing their tricks so they were in the air at the same time. It probably gave McElroy a good warmup for his upcoming run. Bamburg's error would give him eighth on the night. On Saturday night, Moto XXX/Ogio's Jesse Olson stepped up and challenged Bartram for the top spot, finishing three-tenths of a point behind. Olsen had numerous Sidesaddle Lander combos. such as Switchblades and Disco Cans, that set his run apart from those of the other riders. McElroy moved to third on Saturday after placing fifth on Friday. He does the best Cliffhangers, and his runs were also highlighted by Dead Body Indy Airs and one-handed Nac Nacs. LBZ's Robert Distler finished fourth on both nights, having just returned to competition from an injury. His brother John is still out after having broken his knee. The Distler Brothers are the two most underappreciated riders in Freestyle Motocross. No one tries harder than they do and gets less in return. Robert was doing huge Scorpion Supermans, and his Stalefish Heelclicker-to-no-handed-Ianding combo was pretty cool. Myles Richmond is a lesser-known rider who has been getting some good results this year. Arguably the best Rulers of the weekend came from Myles, and his Sidewinders and Cliffhangers were also very well-extended. Had he not cased the landing during Saturday's main, he would have scored closer to the podium. He did make the podium on Friday with a third. And then came the Joneses. It's a good thing "Mad" Mike Jones wasn't riding in Birmingham. because with Andy and Adam Jones competing. it was already fairly confusing trying to keep track of which Jones was which. Andy and Adam both ride for Shift, but they do run different·colored bikes. Andy will try anything at any time. In his qualifier on Saturday, he tried a Sterilizer. He crashed but still made the main. He is a rare rider who can do good Helicopters. Huge Tweak Airs, Rock Solids, 9 O'Clock Nac Nacs, and Look Back Hart Attacks also highlighted his runs. He was rewarded with sixth- and fifth-place finishes on the weekend. Adam, who also rides for DC Shoes, was doing huge no-footed Nac Nacs, and he even threw in a rare trick called a Turntable. A few mistakes in his runs relegated him to a pair of sevenths on the weekend. Skin Industries' Doug Parsons rounded out the last spot in the main on Friday, but he didn't get to compele on Saturday, as his ignition was not firing properly. holeshot in the first moto of the Over 30 A class, in front of Honda riders Rick Drake and Richard Farmer. Carrier took the lead on the first lap and maintained it for the win, followed by Drake and Melcher, with Farmer finishing fourth. Drake took the holeshot in the second mota,' in front of Farmer and Melcher, and held the lead for the first lap. Carrier took the lead on the second lap and stayed there for the win, making for a repeat of the running order in the first moto. Carrier nailed the holeshot in both Over 25 A motos and went wire to wire in each for both wins. Melcher finished a strong second in the first moto, in front of Farmer, but he did not finish the second mota; he garnered third overall. Michael Jones also had a great day, taking all four mota wins in the Over 25 B and Over 30 B classes on a Cycle Specialties Honda. Jones took both moto wins in the Over 30 B class. in front of KTM jockey Ralph Stillwell. David Gordon (4-3) finished third overall, in front of Suzuki jockey Craig Brower (6-4) and Honda rider Mike Royalty (5-5). Brian Boone finished second, behind Jones, in both Over 25 B motos. followed by fellow Honda rider Michael Kidd. Michael Tester and Daniel Shipp had a great battle on Sam's Cycle Yamahas for the wins in the 16-24 and 125cc C classes, respectively. Jason Mudd nailed the holeshot in both motos of the 16-24 class on an Sf,S Powersports Honda, in front of Shipp and Tester. Tester worked his way into the lead on the second lap in each mota. followed closely by Shipp. Mudd finished a close third in the firsl moto but did not finish the second mota, and Yamaha-mounted Ross Murphy (4-3) claimed third overall. in front of Kawasaki jockey Josh Gyukery (5-4). Shipp took both moto WinS in the 125cc C class after battling with Tester in each mota. By MARK BUCHANAN CHARLESTOWN, IN, MAR. 15 After the first two rounds of the Podium One Gold Series were canceled due to bad weather, round three featured the grand reopening of the Podium One Motoplex in Charlestown, Indiana. New owners Jay and Kathy Squire had the track in great shape, and they did a great job of putting on the event, with the help of several of the old Podium One crew. The weather was perfect for March. with sunny skies and 70-degree temperatures for the 207 riders in attendance. Rodney Carrier put in a dominating performance. taking all six mota wins in the 125cc A. Over 25 A and Over 30 A classes on his Finish Une Motorcycles/Suspension Plus Yamaha. John Kinnemeyer took the holeshot in the first 125cc A mota on a MotoXtremes Husqvarna, in front of Carrier and KTM rider Josh Aliff. Carrier took the lead on the first lap and stayed there for the easy win. Chris Bolte worked his Yamaha up from a bad start to take second place from Kinnemeyer on the third lap. Aliff took fourth place, in front of Bryan Wagner. on a Spy Yamaha. Wagner took the holeshot in the second mota, in front of Carrier and Bolte. Carrier took the lead on the first lap and held on for the win again. Wagner held off Bolte for one lap before Bolte took second place. Kinnemeyer also joined the battle and briefly passed Wagner for third place. Wagner retook third from Kinnemeyer, and Bolte crashed with a lap to go, moving Wagner into second place. Boite restarted in fourth place but caught Kinnemeyer before the finish for third. Kinnemeyer took fourth, followed by Aliff. Carrier took the overall with both mota wins, in front of Bolte (2-3). Wagner (5-2) took third, followed by Kinnemeyer and Aliff. Cycle USA publisher Chuck Melcher came down from frozen Wisconsin to grab lhe cue I • n e vv s APRIL 16, 2003 61
