U.S. Mega Series Round 1: Muddy Creek Raceway Boruff Sweeps the Pros By DAVID SAWYER AND AMy DAVISSON Cedar Hill MX: Kevin Lambert won both the 125cc Intermediate and 250cc Intermediate classes at round two of the Pro Privateer Mid-South MX Championship Series in Magnolia, Arkansas. Pro Privateer Mid-South MX Championship Series Round 2: Cedar Hill MX Kennedy Carves Out Cedar Conquests By DIRTBIKEJYlJKE MAGNOliA, AR, MAR, 2 Yamaha-mounted Blake Kennedy of Coving- ton, Louisiana, dominated the Pro classes at round two of DirtBikeMike's Mid-South MX Championship Series. With 16 125cc Pros on the starting line, Chad Cook of Oklahoma City displayed quick reflexes, blasting his Kawasaki Sportscenter of Little Rock-sponsored 125 off the gate and leading the pack into the first tum, Kennedy quickly hooked up with Cook, and they put in some hot laps around the sandy Cedar Hill circuit. Kevin Vines of Texarkana, Texas, had his Suzuki in third on the first lap, but he was soon displaced by Kawasaki-mounted Andrew Cannon from Arkadelphia, Arkansas. At the halfway signal. Kennedy made his move around Cook to take the lead. As soon as Kennedy was around, Cook started to make some mistakes; he bobbled. and Cannon was there to take over second At the finish, it was Kennedy, Cannon and Cook in the top three spots; Vines held on to fourth, and John Adam worked his Cycle & Marine Suzuki up to fifth. Cook again nabbed the holeshot in moto two and led from wire to wire for the moto win. Kennedy was again in second around the whooped-out first tum, but he couldn't find a spot to make a move and ended up second. Adam pushed his way into third on the start and held off another Suzuki rider, Dustin Mantooth from Kirby, Arkansas. Mantooth dogged Adam until the halfway point and then made his move into third. Adam, who is just returning from knee surgery, couldn't hold off the charging Mantooth. Kennedy took the overall win with a 1-2 score, and Cook was second with a 3-1. Mantooth's 6-3 tally was good enough for third. With 15 250cc Pros looking for their share of the $1800 purse, Kennedy never looked at his competition on the line, and once they started, he never looked back, as he led every lap of both motos. Cook and Yamaha rider Nathaniel Benoit of Greenwood, Arkansas, swapped spots, with Benoit taking second overall. Cook took a fairly easy second in moto one but ended up on his head in the second mota. He was in eighth as he came by the tower for the first lap after he went down hard, A steady charge took Cook back up to third, but he couldn't find a spot to move past second-placed Benoit. Kennedy took the overall win; Benoit was second and Cook third. Twenty-seven riders were out for blood in 58 APRIL 16. 2003' cue • e the t 25cc Novice class. Shreveport. Louisiana's Chris Permenter absconded with the holeshot in both motos and dominated the class on his Yamaha. Aaron Burton of Redwater, Texas, put his Honda into the fray and came out second overall with a 3-2 score. Ross Kendrick from Searcy, Arkansas, was third on his Honda. In the 125cc Intermediate class, Ouy Barbaree took his Suzuki to the front and led every lap to win mota one, but he was mired in the pack in mota two and could only muster a fifth-place finish. Fletcher's Cycle Husqvarna pilot Kevin Lambert of Memphis, Tennessee, was second in mota one, and he followed that up with a win in moto two after a good battle with Brandon Hendricks, who was riding a Suzuki out of Junction City, Arkansas. TN, MAR. 9 Dunlop Day at Muddy Creek Raceway was blessed by the motocross gods at the opening round of the United States Mega Series, At Saturday's practice, 755 riders prepared for the race, Throughout Sunday, 956 racers experienced plenty of sunshine and 57 degrees. Not only was the weather perfect, but the Victory Sports crew consistently worked on the track to keep it in great condition. Jon Boruff was the star of the day, winning both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes. Though he took the overall in both Pro classes, it didn't come easily. In the first moto of the 125cc Pro class, Kevin Walker pulled the holeshot. followed by Jason Wiley, Donnie Adams and Micky Marshall. By the end of lap one, Walker had pulled a five-second lead on the pack, and he maintained it throughout the race. Halfway through the moto, a close battle for second began among Adams. Wiley, Marshall and Boruff. On lap four, coming out of the back section of the track, Boruff took second, followed by Adams, Wiley and Nicholas Carroll. On the last lap, Boruff secured second, while Robbie Horton. who had crashed on the first lap, surprised Adams and Wiley by jumping past them to end up taking third, In the second moto, Walker and Boruff traded finishes, giving Boruff the overall. Horton held on to third, followed by Wiley and Carroll. Walker was first off the gate in the 250cc Pro class. Boruff, Wiley and Horton followed him out of the start. These top three riders ran close. until Walker, still recovering from a broken wrist, waved Boruff and Horton by halfway through the moto. Walker still finished a close third, behind Boruff and Horton, After the race, Walker said he waved them by because he'd thought he was holding them up. He regretted his decision when he realized that hadn't been the case. It was once again Walker off the start in the second mota, with Boruff and Adams close behind. Two battles raged throughout this mota: Boruff was chasing Walker for first, and Adams, Carroll and Nicholas Vargo were all banging bars for the next three positions. Coming by the tower on the last lap, Boruff passed Walker and ended up in the lead. Carroll passed Vargo on the last lap to take third. Adams finished fifth. Gaylon Dickson Jr. won both the Over 25 A and Over 35 classes. There wasn't much competition in these two classes for this impressive Pennsylvania rider, but in his third class of the day, he placed second, behind Walker, in the Over 30 A class. The starting gate was overflowing in both the 125cc Band 125cc C classes, so riders were split into two divisions for each class. The top 20 from each division ran the last motos. With so many bikes on the track, all four motos were filled with furious racing. Jeffrey Jennings came out on top of the 125cc B class, followed by Jeffrey Sparks and Jeremy Allison, In the 125cc C class, the top finishers were Jeffrey Coates, Corey Rankin artd Chevis King. The 85cc (7 -11) class was also packed. with 39 riders on the gate. Off the start of the first moto, Zachary Alvear led Kyle Burlile, Sean Cunningham and Ryan Currie. Alvear continued to stretch out his lead throughout the race, while Cunningham tried, unsuccessfully, to take second away from Burlile. Aside from first place, the second mota produced some upsets: Second place was taken by Currie, and Cunningham beat out Burlile for third. The Mega Series got off to an excellent start for the 2003 season, The weather was perfect. the crew kept the track in excellent shape, and the riders put on a good show. Muddy Creek Blountville.
