As the gate dropped for the second 65cc Beginner moto, Green again snared the holeshot, over Robles, Bales, Bell, Brown, Cortinez and Lowenthal. Green's lead lasted until tum two, when Robles outbraked him into the tight comer. The two again took off from the rest of the pack, with the exception of Bell, who tried his hardest to keep the two in sight. On lap two, Robles began to pull a small lead over Green, who had his hands full with Bell. As lap three came to a close, Robles and Green emerged from the back section without Bell. Following the duo now were Brown, Cortinez, Bales and Lowenthal; Bell had fallen and remounted in last place. At the checkers, the order was Robles, Green. Brown, Cortinez. Bales, Lowenthal and Bell. The overall standings were Robles (1.1), Green (2·2), Brown (5·3), Bales (4-5) and Cortinez (6-4). Cuff, provided a very friendly and family· oriented atmosphere for all. Two very cool rangers even came from Yuma to supervise, and tackle some desert on their DR350s. Plaster City West OHV Area New District 38 Desert Series Begins By CHRISTI EVERS OCOTILLO, CA, MAR. 15 The inaugural hare scrambles event for the newly sanctioned AMA District 38 was held in Ocotillo, California, courtesy of Sidewinders Motorsports, which can be crectited with promoting the whole Desert Series on its own and bringing AMA-sanctioned Amateur racing back to the Southland. Overcast skies and a little wind made for excellent desert-racing weather. The course consisted of four loops of approximately 20 miles each. At the riders' meeting, it was announced that the course was technical, and it was: There were no open roads or long sandwashes here! The course traversed open desert, usually crossing sandwashes, dodging many bushes and rocks and taking riders up and down some challenging yet doable hills. The terrain changes really made this a fun and interesting race. Local desert racer Aaron Tuck ran away with the lead and won the overall by a large margin. I e Moto City Raceway MotoDome Boehlke Nails Round Nine By DAN BROTEN STAPLES, MN, MAR. 15 Kurt Boehlke of Cedar, Minnesota, took the win in the Open Pro class at the Moto City MotoDome. Crown Funding-sponsored Eric Brouhard took the holeshot and led every lap until the last comer, when the KTM·mounted Boehlke made an aggressive, slam-bang pass on the inside of Brouhard, whose left leg was injured in the collision: he was grimacing with the pain and needed help to get off the bike. Behind the leaders, there was some very close racing between Johnson I-sponsored Troy Johnson, riding his Cf,J Suzuki, and New Market's Willie Broten, on his Yamaha. Broten and Johnson traded positions with some hair-raising cornering on the part of both Pro riders. Once past Johnson, Broten made a last·lap charge on third-placed rider Billy Hoffmeister, but the veteran Hoffmeister held on by a wheel's length at the flag. The 65cc Mini and 85cc Mini classes were dominated by Suzuki jockey Justin Craft. He won both main events and made a very impressive showing. Craft, riding a full MX setup with knobbies, handled both the track and the competition with ease. With Chris Laubersheimer and Ethan Bjerke absent from the night's program, Craft's wins put him in a position to win the season championship in both of these classes. Vintage Twin-class rider Rick Schmidt put in a good showing, leading early in the race on his Trackmaster BSA 650. Schmidt usually rides his Yamaha single, but he brought out his twin on this night after making ignitionsystem modifications to it. He held off fellow BSA rider Don Boehlke and Yamaha rider Rick Walker Sr. for several laps. Walker and Don eventually made their way around Schmidt for a one·two finish, while Schmidt took third, ahead of Triumph·mounted Gary Bush. This class is a favorite of the "older" crowd, who love the sound of the British twins. Many of the younger riders look at the Vintage Twins and just shake their heads. In the father-and·son department, Masterclass rider Larry Sparks from Lake Crystal, Minnesota, took the win on his Vintage Yamaha, while his son Jeff Sparks took the honors in the 125cc class aboard his Yamaha. With the ground thawing and the weather approaching 60 degrees, the track inside was very moist and needed to be scraped down after practice. Once again, Don "The Duke of Dirt" Boehlke provided a very fast and smooth track for the 41 riders on hand. At the 10th and final race of this series, the Open Pro championship will be decided between Kurt and Brouhard; as of this writing. Brouhard is leading the points race by 20 points. By BLAS KISIC ROSAMOND, CA, MAR. 16 Jeremy Toye was the uncontested victor in the Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula One event at Willow Springs International Raceway. In spite of rain and wind, the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club champion ran uncontested through the main event, leaving his competitors in the dust. Rainfall cursed the track for two days, hampering practice and setup efforts, but the weather was sunny and dry when it mattered. On the front row, Toye was joined by Jack Pfeifer, Jeff Stern and Corey Eaton. Once the race started, Toye led the charge into turn one. Pfeifer lagged behind, the victim of a poor start, but he was able to recover and get back in the hunt within one lap. By then, the leader had proved his superi· ority, speeding away from the pack at a scary pace: T oye started the third lap with a lead of five seconds; in two laps, that difference had grown to 10 seconds; and at the end of lap seven, he was an unbelievable 15 seconds an eternity! -ahead of second-placed Pfeifer. Only a lightning strike could unseat Toye from the top of the podium, so everyone's attention focused on the battle for second place. which was exciting in its own right: After his disappointing start, Pfeifer led that effort, fighting the unpredictable winds while trying to stay ahead of some talented racers . Eaton, Stoney Landers and Stern. Landers proved to be a tough competitor, starting from the second row and fighting his way up to the podium. Getting past Pfeifer, of course, was another matter. Landers tried to pass at differ· ent points of the track, particularly on the front straight. where his machine just didn't have the top speed to stay ahead of Pfeifer, who eventually earned a well-deserved second place. The 750cc Superbike race had a dramatic moment right after the start, as a pair of riders went off the track in turn two. Fortunately, even though one of the riders was listed as "Condition 5," there were no serious consequences. Once the track was cleared of oil and debris, the race was shortened by two laps, and the racers stepped up to the grid for the second time. The green flag opened the floodgates to an urgent, angry contest: With only four laps to go, the riders gave it their all. John Falb III had a good start and led through turns one and two, but as the pack charged up the hill, he was overpowered by polesitter Stern, then Eaton and Marte Cooksey. Not wasting any time, Stern and Eaton engaged in a tight battle for the lead, while a bloody fight for third was waged a few sec· onds back between Cooksey and Reno Karim· ian. The race was over in a flash; like loud, bUlly dust devils, two pairs of riders sped past the checkered flag on the final lap, with winner Stem just ahead of Eaton, and Cooksey and Karimian in third and fourth, respectively.
