Connection-backed American Honda CR85 on the last lap. In the Novice class, Rick Goldrup mounted up a set of Avon rains and rode smoothly to finish ahead of a hard-charging Bryan Yarrow and Jim Willis, all on 450 Hondas. The Vet class was a barn-burner, with KTM pilot AI Salaverria taking the checkered first - only to be disqualified for being too young. At 33, he was unaware that the rules state that the class is for riders 35 and older. This handed the win to Darrick Lucchessi, who beat Rick Pearce and Chris Seitz to the flag. Hoping for dry conditions, the Open Expert heats were held after the lunch break. The field was split in half, with 13 riders in each qualifying race. Heat one saw current numberone-plate holder Leonardo "Pucho" Bagnis get the holeshot on his Vertemati, followed by Salaverria, on a new KTM 525. Yarrow, who had lined up on the back row, was in third by the second lap, and on lap six he slid his MotoMaster Brakes/Works Connection CRF under Salaverria for second. Then, on the next lap, he made a pass on Bagnis for the lead in the same corner and held on till the checkers flew. Heat two in the Open Expert class was equally exciting. Grand National Champion Matt Wait blitzed to the front and slid his White Brothers Yamaha 450cc to victory, over Honda rider Aaron Howe and Jeff Beaubier, who was able to get past Jimmy Lewis on lap eight. The grids were set for the 12-lap Open Expert main. On the front row were Yarrow, Wait, Howe and Bagnis. The rain was picking up, and puddles were forming on the track when the green flag dropped. Yarrow was first into tum one, followed by Wait and then Scott Magann, on a BBR 250. By the third lap, Bagnis, Howe, Cory Call and Salaverria had all made it past Magann. The order remained the same until lap eight, when Bagnis slipped up, allowing Howe, Call and Salaverria by. Now the leaders were hitting lapped traffic. Yarrow and Wait had built a gap on the rest of the field. The close battle for third lasted until the end; Howe edged out Call and Salaverria for the final podium spot. I 11 I L2JWW ~. 0 10k ~!' This day would prove to be a true test not only for the riders but for the track as well. Among those strong enough to last, Ryan Robles, just coming back from a broken ankle, was one rider who persevered throughout the day, When the gate dropped for the first 65cc Beginner moto, Connor Green absconded with the holeshot. Robles followed in close pursuit, and then came Jason Bales, Crash Bell, Jessee Brown, Daniel Cortinez and Daniel Lowenthal. Robies quickly passed Green as the duo pulled the rest of the pack. Green began to push Robles until the two reached a small double section followed by a larger double section, which Robles cleared lap after lap in order to give himself some breathing room. The freight train comprised of Bell, Bales, Brown. Cortinez and Lowenthal followed Robies and Green to the checkers to put moto one in the books. Between the first and second sets of motos, the skies opened up, and it began to rain. Everyone's concerns were goggle clarity and traction. The latter concern turned out to be unwarranted, as the track soaked up every last drop of rain, making for excellent traction.
