and was thankful when the white flag came out. Miller new in for the win, followed by YIinen and Lytle. In 85cc Beginner action, Anthony Cicalese was able to take the overall win despite some tough competition from Cory Gullett and Champ Franco. In the fist mota, Franco nailed the holeshot, followed by Gullett and Chris Navarro. Franco was able to gain a good lead while Gullett held on to second. Meanwhile, Cicalese, who got a bad start, was on the move: Coming from the back of the pack, Cicalese was able to make some quick passes. The checkered came out for Franco, followed by Gullett and, in an incredible comeback, Cicalese in third. In the second moto, Cicalese pulled thE: holeshot, followed closely by Gullett and Franco. Cicalese took advantage of his holeshot and set the pace, while Gullett tried, lap after lap, to make the pass. Cicalese took the win, followed by Gullett and Franco. All three riders were tied with four points apiece, but the win went to the last-moto winner, Cicalese. Results Pee Wee Track 50 JR (4.6): 1. BI21ke Baldlllin (Suz): 2. Chaparral Motocross Kent's Superman Performance By DAN KOUBA BOISE, 10, MAR. 2 John Kent put together four perfect moto finishes en route to winning the 125cc Intermediate and 250cc Intermediate classes at Chaparral Motocross' season opener. Kent, 14, rode like a seasoned veteran, using a combination of brutal speed and consistency to lead almost every lap of each mota. When the gate dropped for moto one of the 125cc Intermediate class, the YZ125-mounted Kent found himself in fast company with Marcus Jenkins and Ben Evans. The trio's freight train of speed quickly separated from the pack 66 APRIL 2. 2003' eye I e as they battled bar to bar, close enough that a jersey could have covered all three of them. While Kent was in the lead, Jenkins and Evans rode on the edge to show him a wheel in every comer. At the beginning of lap three, Kent tumed it up a notch and simply pulled away, winning with ease over Evans and Jenkins. Mota two proved a little more dramatic for Kent; he missed the start. Riding like a man possessed, Kent latched on to the back of the pack and sliced his way to the front like an angry butcher, powering through the muddy, rutted and semifrozen back section like he had Velcro tires. "It was pretty slick in the moming - not the greatest of traction," Kent said, "but it was high-speed and pretty good." Kent dug deep and romped to a 20-second win over Jenkins. Moto one of the 250cc Intermediate class was a repeat performance of Kent's first 125cc moto: He simply wheelied away on his YZ250, putting on a display of aerial acrobatics and finesse that wowed the entire grandstand. Jack Reynolds and Travis Howie rode hard to fill the other two podium spots. It wasn't until the second 250cc Intermediate mota that Kent. with a nearly flawless day thus far, started to show si9ns of battleinduced fatigue, "I kind of got tired," Kent admitted. "The track was getting rougher, and the 250's power was starting to tire me out. I just got off the 80 last June." Reynolds and Howie tried to take advantage of the situation, but Kent hung on for a five second win. The Trent Howie·designed track proved both fun and challenging for the 86 racers on hand, as the traditional motocross track was fused with a mile~long grass cross-country back section. The loam became rutted and rough as the frozen tundra melted under the sun, giving some riders fits but others an opportunity to let it all hang out over the high-speed, rolling course. Nick Lytle nailed the mota-one holeshot, followed closely by Adam Ylinen and Miller. Miller quickly passed Ylinen and then set his sights on Lytle. By the end of the first lap, Miller had the lead and was setting the pace. Meanwhile. Ylinen and Tyler Gallegos were in a heated battle for second. Ylinen had some trouble in the whoops, and Gallegos inched closer. Lap after lap, Ylinen was able to shut down Gallegos and keep his position. The checkered fiag came out for Miller, followed by Ylinen and Gallegos. Lytle again got the holeshot in moto two, followed by Ylinen and then Miller, who made his move early down the back straightaway and took the lead. Ylinen followed closely in second, and Lytle had his work cut out for him in third, as GaIJegos was closing. Lytle managed to obtain some breathing room in third Starwest Cycle Park: Mall Miller was the overall 125cc Beginner winner in Moreno Valley, California.
