Carr made a qUick gas stop at the end of the fifth lap but couldn't pull everything back together for the finish. With one lap left to go, Boreing and Leivan were neck and neck. Leivan was able to show Boreing a wheel a few times but couldn't make anything stick. With a couple of miles left in the race, two lappers were hung up together and blocking the trail. As Boreing and Leivan approached them, Leivan saw the congestion in time to dart off to the left and make the pass on all three. "Steve saw them in time to make the inside line and got around me," said Boreing. "Steve earned it; he ran me down, and I was trying to not worry about him behind me, but that four-stroke is loud." Leivan kept it hammered from that point on and came in to take the checkered flag first, followed closely by Boreing. "I have been racing the TORO series in Texas this winter and haven't been in the roots and rocks for a while," said Leivan. "It took me a little bit to get comfortable and find a groove. It was a good day for me and a chance to get tuned up for the Missouri Hare Scrambles round next weekend." Finishing third was Clint Carr, who held off the KTM 450-mounted Bailey. Poteete followed them in for fifth. Superlift Park Hot Springs, Arkansas Results: March 9. 2003 (Round 11 O/A; I. Sieve Leivan (Yam): 2. Clay Borelng (KTM); 3. Arkansas Hare Scrambles Championship Series Round 1: Superlift Park Leivan Hot at the Springs By PAM CARR HOT SPRINGS, AR, MAR. 9 The opening round of the Arkansas Hare Scrambles Championship Series, held at Superlift Park, outside of Hot Springs, was run under almost perfect conditions. With all of the snow and rain the previous month, most thought it would be a mud run, but the sun came out to shine the week of the race and made the track awesome. Some very technical single-track was broken up with brief sections of fire roads that were very slippery. The rocky terrain held up welt, and although there was some mud on the trail, there was nothing impossible. There was a fairly large turnout for the race, and with sponsors such as Yamaha. Kenda, and EBC Brakes, many riders were out to win contingency and awards. With 17 riders on the front row, there was an opportunity for a good race in the Pro class, and that's just what the fans got. KTMmounted Clay Boreing took the holeshot, followed by Honda riders Matt Burnett and Drew Chandler. At the end of the first lap, Yamaha of Russellville rider Clint Carr moved his bike up into second place. Another rider coming up through the field was SCR-backed Yamaha rider Steve Leivan; he was sitting in fifth after a poor start and a crash early in the race. Boreing picked up the pace on his Moose/Scott/WER/Village Cycle Centerbacked KTM 300 EXC on the second lap. gaining a one-minute lead over Carr. Leivan was making up time; he moved around Chandler into third and then set his Sights on Carr. Therefore, Carr, on his Wiseco/Pro Clean 1000/Clarke/Flatland Racing/Xtrememc.combacked two-stroke, decided he needed to step it up a bit. At the end of the third lap, Carr and Leivan had made up 40 seconds on Boreing. "I felt that if I was going to win, I needed to get up there and catch Boreing," Carr said, "so I gave it more gas on the third lap." With Leivan right on Carr's rear wheel, the two were like a train going through the woods. "With the both of us together like we were, it made it easier for us to get through the lapped traffic," noted Leivan. On the fourth lap, Carr went down in a swampy section, allowing Leivan to pull away into second. Leivan. with new motivation, kicked up the speed some more on his RenthaI/Factory Effex/Answer/Race Tech/Dunlop-backed WR450F. 64 APRIL 2,2003' eye I e Back in the pack, Kawasaki Sports Center jockey Josh Poteete was moving up after a bad start. With Jack Bailey not too far in front of him, Poteete tried to catch up, but he had too many people to pass. On his KX250, Poteete caught Jerry's Triumph Shop-backed Brian Sanders in the process of trying to catch Bailey. Sanders and Poteete battled it out for three laps. "We just kept switching positions back and forth: said Sanders. Finally, Poteete pulled away from Sanders to take over the fifth position. By the end of the fifth lap, Leivan had worked his way up to only 10 seconds behind Boreing. For the entire sixth lap, the two stayed together, with Boreing leading the way. Victorville Motocross Complex weather conditions proved to be most beneficial to Japanese rider Masaki Hiratsuka, who swept both 250cc Pro motos at round five of the VMC Winter Series in Victorville, California. At the start of the first combined 125cc/250cc Novice, Intermediate and Pro moto, Justin Eide jumped out in front, ahead of his fellow 450cc Honda pilot Billy Lavorci. Closely following this pair were 250cc riders Jimmy Lavorci and Hiratsuka. Following this freight train were Eamon Bourke, Tyler Gunn, and the only 125cc Pro, Bryan Hulsey. Hiratsuka wasted no time getting past Jimmy and setting his sights on Billy. Eide faitered in the back section of the track, remounting dead last. After Eide's fall, Jimmy made his way back past Hiratsuka and Billy, in one shot, in the whoop section. With Hiratsuka now on his tail, Billy would not do the huge infield quad jump (which his brother Jimmy also didn't attempt); Hiratsuka did. Up and over Billy's head he went and into second place, behind Jimmy. After a lap, Jimmy and Hiratsuka began to pull away from Billy as the duo approached the same infield quad. Jimmy Singled while Hiratsuka again quadded directly over the Jimmy's head and into the lead. Jimmy kept Hiratsuka honest until the final lap, when he began to fade and fell into the clutches of Billy and the hardcharging Eide. Hiratsuka took the checkers with a comfortable lead over Billy, who made the pass on his brother for second overall. The first go at mota two only lasted three laps, as Gunn crashed over the front triple, causing a red-flag restart. After a quick clearing of the track, the gate was again dropped for the second mota. Eide again pulled the holeshot; however, this time he then shot off of the track in a huge cloud of dust exiting the first turn, taking Bourke with him. Emerging from the dust was Billy, followed closely by Hiratsuka and Jimmy, who were viciously swapping paint between themselves. Billy pulled a short-lived lead over the pair until "mental anguish" got the better of him; Aher looking back several times, Billy finally looked up to see Hiratsuka lIying over his head· once again - over the massive quad jump. Billy then faded back into the clutches of his brother Jimmy. The somewhat dry and rough track proved to be beneficial to Billy's 450, and he held off Jimmy, who then faded back behind the charging Eide. Hiratsuka again won with a comfortable lead over Billy, Eide and Jimmy.
