ATV ride the weekend before flooded creeks on the property. Just getting to the mudholes was challeng- ing enough for some riders who were lined up in some of the largest starting lines ever expe· rienced by the TCCRA. The largest Big-Bike Amateur class had 56 riders, and the Pee Wee Amateur class held a burgeoning starting line of 62. "Clearly. we're going to have to take a look at our options for reducing the size of the lines for the little ones," Whitting said. The standout rider of the day was Sean Reddish, who clobbered the Pro ranks aboard his Honda CRF450R. After losing his silencer two laps into the five-lap race on the 11-mile course, spectators were treated to a riding performance dominated as much by sound as by speed. Several Expert riders reported they could hear Reddish's big red thumper coming a mile away and felt the vibration in their own bikes when he was on their back fenders. Other fast riders included Oliver Benetis, who won the Semi·Pro class; Nathan Price, who led the way to the finish in the 125cc Expert class; and Tim Lambert, who beat the field of 250cc Expert riders. In the Open Expert class, it was Cody Harris who showed the way. By the afternoon, much of the sandy track Pool Ranch: At the start of the Pro contest, Sean Reddish (1) takes his Honda CRF450R to the lead en route to the overall Pro win at the TCCRA season opener in Athens, Texas. had given way to the constant pounding and become a sea of giant whoops that swallowed even the best of the Amateur riders. That didn't stop young Jesse Murphy, who taught everyone how to ride a mini in the Expert class, nor did it slow Tracy Taz Kisor, who was the fastest lady in Athens. "This track was a real test for guys who are trying to get back in shape after a long winter layoff," said Over 45 Internnediate rider Mike Meyer of the Athens track, which was voted Track of The Year in 2002. "But you couldn't ask for a better mix of terrain. and the course layout was fantastic. It was a great day to be a member of the TCCRA." Browmng; 4. KeIth Prather: 5. Richard Dumais. 40. INT: 1. Richard 54 APRIL 2, 2003· cue I e By ROBERT BEAUPRE WINNEMUCCA, NV, FEB. 23 The desert town of Winnemucca, Nevada, has been a stop on the MXWest schedule for years, but when the original course shut down recently, there was suddenly a need for a new facility to carryon the tradition. Luckily, it wasn't long before Nevada Motocross Devel~ opment filled the void by putting together a new track across the highway. The second round of the MXWest Spring Series was the first race for the brand-new circuit. The new layout featured long straights and sandy berms, but it never approached the roughness of the popular Femley sand track. That could be a good or bad thing, depending on who was offering the opinion, though most seemed convinced it was good. Most likely, those offering the most positive opinions were the racers who excelled on the fast course to take some class wins_ Kenny Lash, aboard his Big Valley Hondabacked CRF450R, emerged as the top 250cc Pro. Lash won both motos over Justin Mastal· ka. who rode a borrowed Honda but is known to have a bit of dirt-track experience. which surely did not hurt him through the fast sections. Yamaha's Jimmy Nelson claimed the 125cc Pro victory with a 1-1 score of his own. Nelson's potent FMF-tuned YZ125 was a sight to behold as it roared down the lengthy Winnemucca straights. Mastalka grabbed another 2-2 finish to come in behind Nelson. Darron Sturgeon has been a competitive 250cc Intermediate in the area for a while. and his recent move to the Over 30 class has not slowed him, though it has made things more difficult for the established Vets. Sturgeon scored the win in the Over 30 Expert class, ahead of Honda riders Marcus Gentry and Eric Schacht. The only faster Vet class (Over 30 Pro) belonged to Sven "Butch" Stillmock, who rode his big Cannondale to the front of the pack, as he quite often does. Cameron Bellamy and Erik Arizmendi won their respective djvisions in the 125cc Junior ranks, ahead of two massive groups or racers. Both riders deserve kudos for their winning rides. but perhaps it was the scorers who n u VII' s nemucca in the near future, but the Spring Series will travel to Lovelock, Fernley, Stead and elsewhere first. The northem Nevada race scene is still growing rapidly, so there will likely be no shortage of racers and spectators to support the new Winnemucca track, and others, well into the future. F~e delivered the most formidable performance in this race. Bellamy and Arizmendi seemed to have an easy time riding to the front compared to the headaches the lap takers must have dealt with in accounting for what seemed like 800 riders on the track at once. There weren't really that many, of course, but the people writing down numbers at the finish line still had no easy task. The debut of the Winnemucca facility seemed a success, as the track held up nicely, and the racers encountered few problems. There will certainly be more races at Win- 50 (4-6): I. Austin Chlflg: 2.
