Approximately 3500 people took over the rolling hills of Pool Ranch, with a record 870 riders competing in 42 classes. And so began· with the slinging of mud, sand and the occasional rock - the battle for cross country supremacy in the woods of this tiny East Texas town. With weather conditions nearly perfect the entire weekend, deep sand, tight woods, wide-open straightaways and an occasional mudhole caused by a broken dam greeted racers eager to try out new bikes, new gear, and new classes. "We eouidn't have asked for a better opening round," said TCCRA president Ross Whitting, who was also the promoter for the Athens race. "The only thing I would have changed was the amount of daylight this time of year, but that's controlled by a higher authority. " Whitting said the tremendous growth of the sport and the TCCRA - now the largest offroad-racing organization in the United States· is exciting but also presents significant raceday management challenges. "We had some pretty big mudholes develop after the Expert races and had to reroute some sections of the track," he said. Those changes took about an hour to accomplish, and that time turned out to be a precious commodity toward the end of the day, when the Amateur classes went off at approximately 4:30 p.m. Whitting said the mud conditions resulted after a dam break caused during an Budds Creek. It seems that Armada wiii have his hands fuii for the rest of the season with this bunch. Higgi has placed a target on the back of Armada's chest protector for all of them to aim at. (Of course, Armada has to be in front for them to see it.) A very large Over 40 Expert ciass, with participants from all over the western states, was consistently won by Riverside's Dave Simon, who managed the muddy track and the ruts beautifully. In the fifth and final moto, though, Norm Eberle of Washington moved out of his prior thirds and fourths to take the win and third overall. Pete Leighton of the Arizona Club had consistent seconds, except for a fifth in the final moto, and took second overall for the weekend. The Arizona Old· Timers did an excellent job on what was really their first effort. The club volunteers made everyone welcome, and the weekend's racing was well-organized. The efforts of people such as Annie McCarthy from Washington and Judy Aja from Nevada are much appreciated; their experience in the task of scoring was invaluable.
