[}{]@W Il[}i]@'ij @@71 Il[}i]@f?® Qualifying Yamaha's Chad Reed sped uncontested to the first heat win, pulling away by over a second a lap to win the eight-lap race by 10.4J3 seconds. Amsoil/Chaparral Honda's Travis Preston was about two seconds in front of Mach 1 Yamaha's Nick Wey for second. The final direct transfer went to Honda's Ernesto Fonseca. "I just wanted to get back in the groove: Reed said after the heat win. "We had a weekend off. It's good to get back in the starting gate again." In his heat race, Honda's Ricky Carmichael didn't start as strongly as Reed, but he finished stronger. Part of it was Ezra Lusk's fault_ The Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki rider kept Carmichael in his sights for more than half of the race, the champion gaining eight seconds on Lusk in the final four laps to win the heat by 11.761 seconds. Carmichael said he was having trouble in the whoops, but you wouldn't know it. In one six-jump sequence, Carmichael was able to consistently clear the same grouping, while Lusk wasn't as automatic. "I just need to get a little bit better in the whoops," said Carmichael, whose heat win was 3.4 seconds faster th.an Reed's. "I think that's where I was losing time. I have an idea that should help me substantially in the main. If I get that dialed, no worries." With only five main events to go, including this evening's, Carmichael was mindful of the bigger picture. "I have a 25point lead, and I just need to secure that. I don't need to take any chances." he said. Behind Lusk came a pair of So Be Suzukis - Danny Smith in front of Sean Hamblin - the final two direct transfers. Off to the semis went the Yamahas of Heath Voss (Mach 1 Yamaha) and Star Racing's Keith Johnson. MotoXXX's Larry Ward thundered to a win in the first semi, the Honda CRF450R rider leading from the start and winning the six-lap race by 3.309 seconds. Ward's teammate Clark Stiles was second in front of Team Solitaire Yamaha's Ryan Clark. Subway/Service Honda's Jason Thomas was in fourth when he staHed on the final lap, handing the spot to teammate Joe Oehlhof, with Greg Schnell getting the final transfer. It would take until the third lap of the second semi, but finally there was a pass for the lead. ECC Suzuki's Tyler Evans went inside of Mach 1 Yamaha's Heath Voss in a 90-degree left at the end of the far side jump section. Voss was having none of it and came back at Evans after the finish-jump whoops only to tip over to his left, narrowly avoiding Evans, who sped on to victory. Voss recovered in fifth, gaining one spot to take fourth. Behind Evans came Star Racing's Keith Johnson and Red Bull KTM's Joshua Woods. Subway/Service Honda's Jason Thomas didn't stall in the LCQ, the Floridian leading from the start to take one of the two final transfers to the main. The other went to Team Racerhouse.com Yamaha's Brian Mason, who ran down Tyson Hadsell, then ran hard under him in the final comer, the impact sending Hadsell over a Tuff Block (below).
