Central Oregon Motocross Series Round 1: Madras Motocross STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT MADRAS, OR, MAR. 1-2 ..,... wo years ago, Brody Baxter was [(.. one of Oregon's top Intermediate riders and appeared to be about ready for the Professional ranks. A decision to attend college, however, put a temporary halt to what could have been a promising hobby or career. Baxter, though, decided a comeback was in the works, and he picked his home track to do just that, making his mark at Madras Motocross, site of the opening round of the Central Oregon Motocross Series, which also doubled as round II of the 14-round CMC Northwest Winter Series. As was evidenced by his performances in his comeback bid, Baxter hadn't lost any speed after two full years of not riding. The rider from nearby Powell Butte, Oregon, celebrated his 20th birthday by posting four overall wins during the two-day event on the high desert. It drew a large contingent of riders from throughout the Northwest. Baxter's wins came in the 250cc and Before The Hill Intermediate classes. Another rider achieving similar success was Redmond's Chris Alldredge. Riding a 50cc Cobra, Alldredge won the 50cc Open and Pee Wee (7-8) classes on both days, also with I-I sweeps. Alldredge has been on a statewide rampage this year, dominating the small-wheel action nearly every time he's competed. On Saturday, AII- dredge's first win came in the combined Pee Wee classes; he dealt a blow to the Pee Wee (7-8) class. Alldredge jumped out in front in both motos, although in the second moto, the Cobra pilot fell while leading the field into turn one but mounted a remarkable comeback bid to seal a I-I sweep. Another of the fast locals, KTM rider Cory Paterson, trailed Alldredge in both motos to garner second overall. Husqvarna-mounted Brandon Barber, the current CMC Series points leader, overcame poor starts and a tumble to finish third overall with a 3-4 score, followed by Jason Doane (5-3) and Coby Ayres (4-6). In the adjoined Pee Wee (3-6) class, Polini rider Brayden Massey massacred the competition with a 1- 1 sweep of his own to lead Wyatt Fowler and Ryan Burggren into the top three overall. Matt Wilson came out on top of the competitive Supermini class, though not without a battle from a pair of local Suzuki riders, brothers Blake and Ben Anglen. Ben held off challenges from Wilson to win moto one, but his DNF in moto two aided in Wilson's overall win. Blake, who finished third in moto one, placed second to Wilson in moto two and grabbed second overall. Southern Oregon speedster Bradley Hillman put in two superb rides to finish third overall, ahead of Jared Wood and Jon Varcoe. In each of his two classes Baxter had tough competition, especially on Saturday from the lone Pro rider in Chris Alldredge was also dominant, picking up wins in the Pee Wee (7-8), 50cc Open and 60cc Junior classes in Madras, Oregon. Brody Baxter rebounded nicely from a two-year hiatus to post overall wins In the 250cc and Before The Hili Intermediate cla....s at Madras Motocross, site of the opening round of the Central Oregon Motocross $eries. 50 OPEN: 1. However, things went awry for Scheffel: He had a scant lead over Baxter in the second 250cc Intermediate/Pro moto when his Honda CRF450R's engine failed, and Baxter posted the win. Yamaha rider Danny Costa chased Baxter in the 250cc and Before The Hill Intermediate classes and finished runnerup to Baxter in both. On Sunday, it was more of the same from Baxter and Alldredge. The surprise of the day, though, was Hillman, who scored what was most likely the biggest win of his racing career with a victory in the second 80cc Age Group moto, posting a major upset in the process. Hillman held off both Anglen brothers in moto two to seal the 80cc (9-11) class win, to complement his earlier 60cc Senior-class win. Ben finished second to Hillman in the second 80cc Age Group moto but nabbed a win in the 80cc (14-16) class, followed by Blake, who won the 80cc (12-13) class. Ben and Blake split moto wins in the Supermini class, with Ben (2-1) winning overall. With impressive wins in the 125cc and 250cc Beginner classes on both days, 14-year-old Erik Meusling joined Alldredge, Baxter and the select few other riders to sweep their respective classes. The Suzuki and Honda-mounted rider from Gervais, Oregon, won every moto he entered, winning his final 250cc moto on Sunday by 26 seconds over his closest competitor, Paul Jones. eN (Yam). S/M1NI: 1.
