But if Alex Mclean, Jim Neuenburg and Tim Joyce needed any warming up for the new season, it sure wasn't apparent. Mclean took three convincing wins - in Pre-1940, Class C Handshift and Classic Sixties - and a fourth place in a highly competitive 500 Premier race aboard Bob McKeever's Champagne Norton Racing Team single-cylinder machines. Neuenburg, meanwhile, used Bultaco power to capture 250 Grand Prix, 350 Grand Prix and Formula 250. And Joyce was the third triple winner, taking the checkers first in BEARS, Formula 750 and Sportsman 750, all on Triumphs. The 2003 Historic Cup Series opener moved from the Deland Airport circuit to Jennings GP in north Florida in a three-day event jointly promoted by the track, WERA Vintage and AHRMA. Racers from other vintage groups such as New England's USCRA and Canada's VRRA were invited to participate in a reciprocal license arrangement, and it was a rousing success. The AHRMA race day attracted more than 400 entries, considerably more than the turnout had been in recent years at Deland, & 56 MARCH 19, 2003' eye I War II-era airfield. Mclean began his winning ways in the first race, the combined Pre1940/200 Grand Prix. In the 250 GP/Formula 125 race, Neuenburg made his long trip payoff and Carl Race Charles aboard Anderson on a Yamaha. two saw class champ Al take the Super Mono win a '93 Ducati Supermono, by taking the 250 win. Pushing the Bultaco TSS rider to the checkered flag was David Roper on a '65 Aermacchi. Greg Steinbeck rode his chased by Yamaha-mounted Eric Mercer. The two modern two-stroke classes were on the track at the same time, with Jim Struke taking Sound of Honda MT125 to victory in F-125. Mclean was back out front in the Class C race on the '32 Norton, ahead of a BMW contingent of Auer, Singles Two-Stroke on a Honda RS125, and France's John Weeden getting the Battle of Twins TwoStroke win ahead of Christopher Gutsch and Willie Bertsch.
