Wilson was the overall 125cc Beginner winner at the Diamond Head Gran Prix in Palmdale, California. In the Old-Timers Over 40 Expert class, YZ450F-mounted Garry Conner jumped out to an immediate lead, with Keevan Acevedo, Mark Mangold and Steve Jordan giving chase. Acevedo pressured Conner for a couple of laps before going down and dropping to a distant eighth. Jordan passed Mangold for second, but Mangold stole the position back two laps later. Jordan caught Mangold again at the halfway point. and this time the pass stuck. By this time, Conner was long gone with an insurmountable lead. Jordan was cruising along in second place, a comfortable distance ahead of Scott McDonali and Terry Sabadin, who were mixing it up over third place. Aceve· do was making a comeback, and he managed to reel in and pass both McDonaU and Sabadin with just two laps remaining. Acevedo closed in on Jordan on the white-flag lap but simply ran out of time and had to be content with a third-place finish. Sabadin ended up getting the better of McDonali for fourth.
