Metcalf Motorcycle Park McRae Rails Metcalf By RANDY HElM SAN JOSE, CA, FEB. 2 Metcalf Motorcycle Park was the venue for the third round of the Winter Series. Race day was a little cool, but at least the sun was shining. After putting up with heavy fog during most of Saturday's practice, riders didn't seem to mind the cool conditions on Sunday. Due to the somewhat limited parking facilities, racers were showing up as early as Friday afternoon to get a good spot. In the 125cc Novice class, Travis McRae got the job done, going 1- 1 for first overall on the day. At the start of the first moto, Mark Abrew pulled the holeshot aboard his VZF250, with McRae running second and Randy Fields a close third. While Abrew and McRae fought over first, Fields sneaked his Vamaha by both of them to take the lead on the second lap. The running order going into the third lap was Fields, McRae, Abrew and Chris Lofano. After settling down, McRae focused on the leader and passed Fields at about the halfway mark. From there on, McRae held the lead until the checkers. Fields finished second, and Abrew rounded out the top three, making it one·two· three Yamaha finish. The second moto started out great for Fields, who grabbed the holeshot and the early lead, followed by McRae in second and Jeremy Kneisley in third. Fields was holding his own up front and was on cruise control until things went south for him on the whitelIag lap, when the Vamaha rider dropped to eighth. McRae inherited the lead, and the rider from Uvermore took the win again for a per· feet day. Kneisley finished second, and Zachary Carter from San Jose took third, making it another Yamaha one· two-three for the second moto. McRae, of course, took first overall with his 1-1 tally, while Zachary Carter finished second on the day with 5·3 finishes, and Chris Lofano rounded out the top three for the day with a consistent 4-4 score. In the always-competitive 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes, Gino Scolari and Scotty Aives eamed bragging rights. Vamahamounted Scolari topped the 125cc class, while Alves did the kicking in the 250cc class. The Metcalf track seemed to suit the Hondamounted Alves, who won both motos convincingly. . In the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, it was David Gassin and Adam Miller sharing wins. In the 125cc class, Miller put his Yamaha out front early in both motos but couldn't hold back the hard-charging Gassin. In the 250cc class, Miller found some extra speed and won both motos, with Gassin finishing runner-up. Auberry's Tony Wolf finished third in both classes, making it another Yamaha sweep. Wolf had his moment in the spotlight when he took his first win in the Big-Bike Dash For Cash. earning himself some extra money. Honorable mention goes to Ukiah's T.J. Lorenz, who swept three 80cc classes. The Yamaha speedster earned victories in the BCcc (B-11), BOcc Intermediate and Supermini classes. Wilson picked up his first win of the year in the 125cc Beginner class with the Califomia Racing Club. When the dead-engine-start race was kicked to life, Ken Slater Jr. emerged with the early lead. Wilson settled into second place on the opening lap, just ahead of Colin Flaherty, Marc Shear and Andrew Dickie. Wilson studied Slater's lines for just about the first 10 minutes of the 45-minute race before making the pass for the top spot. Once out front, Wilson quickly put a few seconds on Slater. By the midway point, lappers started to become an issue, and Wilson seemed slightly better at slicing through the backmarkers as he put even more distance between himself and Slater. After 45 minutes of track time, it was the Nationwide Cycle/VP Fuels/Bridgestonebacked VZ 125 of Wilson that got to the checkers first. Slater finished second, a safe distance ahead of Flaherty. Shear crossed the line in fourth, and Josh Erickson rounded out the top five. ...-------------------------------, ~ w w ::> a: '" <: Daniel's Ridge Motocross ~ Kelley Kills 'em By MARK NElJENS TAVLORSVILLE, NC, FEB. 9 Great weather at round nine of the Daniel's Ridge Motocross Fall/Winter Series made for some great racing action in the Senior Mini class. In the first moto, Gary Johnson took the holeshot, followed by Brandon Kelley, with his brother Adam right beside him. Adam sped past Brandon to quickly claim second. They were followed by Ty Smith and Josh Harris. Adam went to work on Johnson and took over the first spot. Johnson had to take it easy, as he is just coming back from a wrist injury four weeks ago. Adam took off in the lead. while Johnson prevented Brandon from getting close to his brother. Behind Brandon, Smith and Harris were looking to get in there, too. Johnson held them off for about a lap but then eased up and let them all by. Adam took the white lIag with a comfortable lead. Brandon, in 50 (0·6): I. Cody Fendley (KTM); 2. Robert Nalezny (Cob); 3. In the second moto, Adam took the holeshot, followed by Johnson, Brandon, Smith and Harris. Brandon quickly went by Johnson, followed by Smith, who made the same move. As Adam led, Brandon was hold· ing off Smith, looking for a place to get by. Smith made the move in the whoop section to get side by side with Brandon and tucked under at the tum to take over second. Smith did the middle double to make up time on Adam, and Harris was pushing Brandon. Harris got beside Brandon going into the whoops; Brandon made it to the tum first for third. Then Harris made the front double to go by Brandon for third. Meanwhile, Smith was pushing Adam at every tum. Smith got alongside Adam and did the middle double to take first. Adam drove hard to the corner and went under Smith to take back first. Smith drove into the big back turn to go back by Adam, and they went single-file across the front double.
