Oklahoma State Championship Series Round 2: Sooner State Cycle Park Unruh Unrelenting By CONNIE JOHNSON WELLSTON, OK, FEB, 15-16 Round two of the Oklahoma State Championship Series landed on a cold weekend at Sooner State Cycle Park in Wellston, Oklahoma. An awesome new track design greeted the hardy souls who tumed out to race, and nobody went away disappointed - especially Heath Unruh, who took home the prize money for first place in the 250cc Expert class. Coming off the gate in moto one were Wes Parr, Ricky Petersen and Unruh, all aboard Yamahas. Parr claimed the holeshot, but by the end of lap one he had Petersen and Unruh all over him. Petersen and Unruh swapped places a few times, and somewhere in the wooded back section of the track, Petersen went down, leaving Unruh to concentrate on passing Parr. By the third lap, it was Unruh, Parr and Rusty Scheiterle, also on a Yamaha, leading the rest of the pack. Scheiterle. however, had a fight of his own trying to hold off the Honda-mounted Ryan Green. While Unruh started to pull away from the rest, Green passed Scheiterle and then started pressuring Parr. By the time the checkers came out, Green had taken over second, behind Unruh. with Scheiterle, Parr and Petersen rounding out the top five. Moto two featured another bar-to-bar start between Petersen and Parr, from which Petersen came out on top. Green wasted no time getting into second, but he crashed in the woods. Unruh moved into second but couldn't get around Petersen, who put in a flawless moto. Scheiterle took third, pushing Parr back to fourth again. Jerad Rhodes put his Yamaha into the fifth-place finish position, The 125cc Novice class was dominated by Elbert Simon, on his Yamaha. Justin Cagney actualiy got the holeshot in moto one, but he couldn't keep his Yamaha out in front. While Simon got out in front and pulied away, Garrett Teasley put his Suzuki into second place, followed by Kawasaki jockey Devin Blackburn, Yamaha-mounted Kyle Sauder, and Cagney. In moto two, Simon once again got out front early, but this time Teasley gave him a run for his money, getting on his back fender more than once. As they came around for the last time, it was still Simon, Teasley, Honda rider Kyle Stokes, Biackburn and Yamaha rider Jason Brunk. KTM rider Chuck Cooper jumped to the front in moto one of the Over 30 class, with Greg Ingels in hot pursuit on his Kawasaki. Ingels made the pass and held on to the lead for two laps before Eric Sutton moved his Kawasaki past him for first. Ingeis spent the last two laps climbing all over Sutton's back fender, but to no avail. Cooper finished third, with Yamaha-mounted Mike McCutcheon barely holding off Honda rider Deral Hunter for fourth. Cooper got the holeshot again in moto two. It looked liked a repeat of the first moto, as Sutton took the lead away from Ingels while Hunter and McCutcheon battled behind Cooper. Mike Forkner had a different ending in mind, however, and he got past Hunter and put his Kawasaki into fifth. Sooner State Cycle Park Wellston. The Trailblazers Motorcycle Club's Sahwave 100 drew a record number of entrants, with close to 275 riders showing up to do battle in perfect, dust-free conditions. For the fifth year in a row, a light snow fell the night before, making the only two-loop hare and hound in the series an excellent opportunity for close racing. More than 50 percent of the course was virgin trail, with the second loop being almost entirely single~track trails and washes. Belingheri was never really challenged for the overall lead, which he had under control from start to finish. At the end of the quarter-mile smokebomb run, Belingheri was the first rider to the ribboned trail, followed closely by Reece Honea, Paui Emerson, Dave Mayer and Bryce Olsen. Belingheri quickly stretched out a minute's lead over Olsen, who had a little gap over the hard-charging Ryan Johnson. After a poor start, Steve Tichenor worked his way up to sixth, right behind Jason Alosi and Darrol Brown. Mayer seemed to be adjusting well to his new class· Open Expert - and his new ride, a YZ450. Approximately 42 miles of sand washes, trails and mining roads later, MxSales.com/ Reno Motorsports rider Belingheri entered the pits with about a one-minute lead. Johnson had passed Olsen but was experiencing some problems. "I started to catch Dennis when my clutch cable broke," Johnson recounted. "I had passed Olsen and was making up time when it just snapped," Johnson's pit crew didn't have the necessary spare parts, so he left the pits hoping to just finish the next loop. Olsen was next into the pits, followed by Mayer, who had passed several riders with a hot line in a wash - about which several riders voiced their opinions and even threatened a protest. Tichenor left on loop two in a comfortable fourth, while Alosi and Brown left fender to fender. After 50 miles of single-track, roads, and a rather large downhill, Belingheri crossed the finish line at the bottom of another steep downhill with about a four-minute lead. "The course was fun overall," he stated of his trouble-free ride.
