California Gold Cup Motocross Series Round 3: Glen Helen Raceway Park running out to capture the overall honors. Michael Parker of Las Vegas used consistent 4-4 rides for third, over the 6-3 tally of Caleb Gosselaar and the 7 -7 score of Derreck Murphy. McCrummen and LaPaglia went at it again in the opening Schoolboy moto, with the KTM-mounted McCrummen prevailing. LaPaglia didn't make the gate in moto two, allowing McCrummen to make a clean sweep of the field. Parker turned a pair of good starts into 3-2 finishes for second overall, followed by Murphy (6-3) and Trevor Monks (5-4). LaPaglia felt pressure from both Micky Griffin and Gosselaar en route to the 250cc Intermediate first-moto victory. KX250 pilot Jason Jeffrey absconded with the holeshot in moto two, but LaPaglia made the pass on SAN BERNARDINO, CA, FEB. 16 eam Green's Trent Pugmire had a near-perfect day at round three of the fifth annual Maxxis/AC Racing/ Dirty Girls/Maxima-sponsored California Gold Cup Motocross Series. Heavy rains during the week turned the Glen Helen Raceway Park National track into a rutted mess, but that didn't seem to faze Pugmire much; he won five out of six motos entered to win the Supermini and 85cc Open classes and also finished second overall in the 85cc (12-13) class. The 12-year-old Sinisalo/Shoei/ Smith/PAX-backed Pugmire was consistently the first one to the first turn throughout the day. In Supermini action, Pugmire basically let everyone else hash it out over second place in both motos as he disappeared with the wins. Beau Weigand finished second to Pugmire in moto one, with a little breathing room over Dane Jackson and Topher Ingalls. Jackson and Ingalls were allover Weigand throughout moto two, with Ingalls prevailing. When the dust settled, Weigand's 2·3 finishes topped Ingalls' 4-2 score for second overall. Dana Dreier (5-4) and Garrett George (6-5) rounded out the top five. The 85cc Open class was more of the same, with most of the same players. Pugmire once again turned a couple of excellent starts into a I-I sweep. Weigand and Joshua Huerta each earned a second-place finish, with the nod going to Weigand by virtue of his better second-moto performance. Jackson, Aaron Fox and Nick Sanchez were all over one another in both T 56 MARCH 12,2003' c: y c: • e races; Jackson's 4-5 score topped the 7 -4 efforts of Fox for fourth. Pugmire ran away with the first 85cc (12- 13) moto and was looking to do the same in moto two until he slid out in a corner at about the midway point. Pugmire got restarted in eighth place but climbed all the way back up into second at the checkers. The YZ85-mounted Ingalls was too far gone for Pugmire to catch, and he went home with the overall honors on a 2-1 day. Huerta held off Dreier in moto two to earn third overall. Matt Dowell went 6-5 for fifth. Try as he might, Michael LaPaglia couldn't outrun Eric McCrummen in the first 125cc Intermediate moto. The same thing happened in moto two, as LaPaglia got the start, but McCrummen found a way around him by the halfway point. LaPaglia wasn't about to give up, and he retaliated with a pass of his own with time n eVIl's lap one. LaPaglia went on to win the moto, with Griffin keeping him honest the entire distance. Jeffrey's 4-4 score edged out the 2-6 tally of Gosselaar for third overall. AMA 125cc Western Regional Supercross Series competitor Josh Hansen got around a fast-starting Josh Bagge to earn the 125cc Pro first-moto win. Daton Beavers was a few seconds off Hansen's pace for second, and Tyson Burmeister crossed the line in third, ahead of Bagge and Justin Jenson. Hansen got the moto-two holeshot and was soon being hounded by Beavers, who pushed Hansen for the entire race to make him work for his first-place money. Burmeister was third again. Beavers returned to run away with both 250cc Pro motos aboard his RM250. The second-place money went to Randy Clark on a 2-2 tally. Bagge went 4-3 for third, over the 5-4 score of Phil Donnell and the 7-5 finishes of Jenson. KTM rider Zachary Fussell made the trek all the way down from Las Vegas worthwhile for his parents, as he strung together four perfect motos to earn the first-place trophy in both the 65cc Open and 85cc (Through 11) classes. Fussell also topped the first 65cc (9-11) moto, but a fourth-place finish in moto two held him to third overall, behind Hayden Commans (4-1) and Armando Aguilar (3-2). eN Glen Helen Raceway Parle San Bernardino, California Results: Feb",ary 16, 2003 (Round 31 P/W (4-6): 1.
