crowd applauded the Yamaha rider's efforts as the first to "clean" several difficult sectjons. Ossa-mounted Dave Lindeman was not far behind, carding a score of 50 points for second in class, behind Sims' total of 48. Alfredo Rodil put in a strong performance on his Yamaha for third. Greeves rider Don Kelly prevailed in a closely contested match of Premier Lightweight Intermediate riders with a final tally of 20 points. Second position went to Triumph pilot Jim Lipscomb. with 27 points. and third went to Ducati rider Phil Drury and his 29point total. Wayne Sumner and Harold Heit· miller came in fourth and fifth with respective scores of 30 and 35 points lost. At the end of the day, everyone had big smiles, and many had a newfound respect for the slippery, dry and "flat" desert terrain that is the setting for the "Duel in the Desert." Results BEG; I. Gamblers MC Deuces Wild HS Los Angeles County Raceway Gosnell Cards a Win at the Deuce Hill Above the Rest By GREG ROBERTSON By MIKE COWNS CRIPPLE JACK'S WELL, NV, FEB. 2 Matt Gosnell blew the competition away and claimed the overall position at the Deuces Wild Hare Scrambles. At the last MRAN race. Gosnell was penalized two positions for miss· ing the first tum after the bomb run. This time around, Gosnell played it straight, and it paid off in the end with the victory. At the start, it took three kicks to get the YZ450F to fire, and Gosnell again had trouble in a sand wash and broke his clutch lever. With the cards still not falling his way, Gosnell lost a bolt that held his rear-brake lever on. However, not one to be undone, Gosnell sorted out his problems and still took the checkered flag some 60 seconds in front of the winner of the last race, Clint Braun. The biggest story of the Gambiers MC's Deuces Wild event, however, was that of the overall Novice winner, Devon Graham, who had been sidelined from racing since last June when he suffered a head·on collision during the Nevada 1000 on his way to pit for some friends. Devon finished 45th overall and beat his closest competitor by 40 positions. "The best part of the race was the sandy turns and all the single·track trails," exclaimed an excited Graham. "The worst part was all the bottle-necking at the downhill." MRAN is starting the year off strong with two well·organized races. The Jackrabbits MC are up next on the calendar in Moapa, Nevada. PAIJo\DALE, CA, FEB. 2 Randy Hill piloted his Ceet/Bill's Pipes/ Applied/Wiseco-backed RM 125 to a two-moto sweep of the 125cc Novice class at Los Angeles County Raceway during California Racing Ciub's Sunday motocross. First-moto action saw YZ250F·mounted David Robertson pull one of his usual good starts as he led Hill, Zach Brown and Anatol Kozlowski. Robertson set the pace out front for a little more than a lap before Hill dropped him a position. Once out front, Hill went the distance for the win. Brown overtook Robert· son for second place on iap three and stayed there until the finish. Travis Foos came from the back of the pack off the start to claim third, ahead of Kozlowski, Ryan Butts and Robertson. The second moto was a copy of the first, as Robertson absconded with another holeshot and Hill made the pass before lap two. And just as in moto one, Hill would outrun his competition for a sweep of the field. Butts hounded Kozlowski for second place for much of the race before finally making the pass on the white-flag lap. The 5-2 score of Butts allowed him to come out on top of a threeway points tie with Kozlowski (4-3) and Brown (2-5) for the second-place trophy. Joey Savatgy cleaned up in the 65cc Beginner class with a resounding two-moto sweep. Savatgy made his way to the front of the pack on lap one of both motos and never looked back. Tyler Vanderlip suffered a poor start in moto one and could only manage a fourth-place showing, behind Frank Tucker and James Wilcox. Vanderlip got a better jump off the gate in round two, and by lap three he had settled into second place, where he would stay to claim second overall. Third went to Wilcox on a 3-4 score, followed by Shaun Rhinehart (5-3) and Dilion Rowsell (6- 5). Consistency paid off in the form of an overall win for Randy Winslow in the Senior Amateur class. Bob Dunham went wire to wire for the first-moto win aboard his YZ250. Winslow and Scott McDonall each took a turn running in second place, with Winslow holding the position when it counted most - on the iast lap. The second moto was McDonall's turn to shine. as he got around a fast-starting Dean Jennings and then Dunham to win the moto. Winslow slowly worked his way up into a second-place finish, whkh was good enough for the overall honors. Dunham's 1-3 tally topped the 4-1 score of McDonali for second on the day. Dubin Courageous By JASON DUBIN VICTORVILLE, CA, FEB. 8 As the morning sun crested the desert hills of Victorville on the day of round three of the VMC Winter Series, riders and spectators alike were greeted with a smile by Tammy and her husband, Lee Saul, the two gracious hosts of the track. The deceptively cold morning would turn into a hot day, which proved to be very advantageous for riders in the Over 40 class. When the gate dropped for the first moto of the day, for the combined Over 40 Novice, Beginner and Intermediate classes, two of the three Novices were out front. Dave Dubin absconded with the holeshot, over Ted Williams, Intermediate rider Kirk Shimek, Beginners Danny Morales, Jim Williams and Jim Crouch, and the rest of the pack. Dubin held a small lead for about a lap, while Ted and Shimek were looking for a way around. This trio pulled away from the rest of the pack and maintained this formation until lap three. when Shimek jumped over both Dubin and Ted over the large finish-line double. Ted passed Dubin shortly thereafter, and then gave chase to Shimek. At the end, Shimek took the checkers over Ted and Dubin. Moto two started off much the same: Dubin pulled the holeshot, this time over Jim, Mark Purser, Ted, Morales, Shimek and the rest of the pack. The determined Ted worked his way into second by the end of lap two. However, it was Dubin's sheer determination that would prove to be his own undoing. As the two Novices crested the large finish· line double at the end of lap one, the crowd watched as Dubin held the throttle wide open on his RM250 in an attempt at clearing the monstrous jump. Dubin came up about eight feet short, bouncing forward yet spectacularly holding on to the bike and his lead. Dubin and Ted began to pull away from Jim, Shimek, Morales and the rest of the Over 40 riders. As lap two came to a close, Dubin again attempted the finish-line double. However, this time the jump was unforgiving; Dubin cased it and hit the ground hard. He jumped right back up on his bike, only to find it badly tweaked. Ted inherited the lead, over a hard-charging Shimek and Jim. Shimek caught Ted at the end of the moto but came up a few bikelengths short at the finish. Dubin Results O/A; I. Men Gosnell (Yam): 2.
