Diamondback Sports Center
Stuckey Snakes the
Rattler Fun Run Win
By DAVID SUTTON
RESACA, GA, JAN. 26
Just a few weeks ago, the first·ever Diamondback hare scrambles was held at this top·
notch motocross facility. It was a SETRA
event and a smashing success. The course
had some tough uphills and downhills with
loads of off-cambers that challenged even the
seasoned veterans. Some folks, intimidated by
the large rider turnout of a SETRA event
and/or the difficulty of the course, chose not
to participate, so the Diamondback boys
decided to layout a course for the intimidated
rider who wants to ride a hare scrambles.
Gone were the hard-ta-negotiate hills and
many of the tight, technical sections. The
course was nine miles, with three separate
grass courses, plenty of jeep roads and wide
trail, and, to top things off, that great
motocross course.
Despite the cold, some 85 riders showed
up for race day.
Mike Linkous had little trouble taking the
overall in the Vet C class, followed by fellow
KTM rider Chris Dodd.
Stacy Painter won the 250cc C class by
staying ahead of Jeremy Haws and Quentin
Wynn.
The 200cc C class was a fast one, as
Four-Stroke C rider Tony Hodges parked his
YZ250F and jumped on an RM 125 to take top
honors. Not far behind was Patrick Dortch. In
only his second race, Wesley Dickinson came
up third again.
"I love this!" Dickinson exclaimed. "I got
tired of all the broken bones in supercross."
Kasie Powers had nobody to race with in
the Women's division. so she smoked a bunch
of the boys.
"Being a motocrosser, I had that section
wired: she said. "The woods... Well, I need to
work on that."
Rod Stuckey was back in action. in his first
race of the season.
"I can't stay away: Stuckey admitted. "I
had to concentrate on the four bike shops
after Dad's retirement, but now things are run·
ning smoother, so I decided to get going on a
Honda 450 all on my own. I plan on running
some of the last SETRA races and the
GNCCs."
Stuckey was also the proud recipient of the
$200 purse provided by Performance Cycle of
Dalton, Georgia.
As the 12-rider AA field left the line,
Stuckey was still trying to start the big Honda.
He finally got going about 45 seconds behind
the field. Jason Chancey moved out to about
a one-minute lead by the conclusion of lap
one. Meanwhile, Dennis Johnson, Gary Hendricks and Scott Swindle were duking it out.
Stuckey was slowly coming though the field,
::----------------------,:1:
and halfway into the last lap of the five-lap
race, he got by Chancey and held on for the
win. Neely Racing·backed Chancey finished
just 16 seconds back, and Johnson, Hendricks
and Swindle completed the top five.
"This course was great· it was just like a
GNCC: said Stuckey, all smiles. "You could
race all the way around it. It's great to race
again.'"
The top A rider was Bryan Grant in the
200cc A class. Benjie Whitey was the top B
rider, racing in the Four-Stroke B class.

Glen Helen Raceway Park

SAN BERNARDINO, CA. JAN. 25
An extremely large turnout of racers made for
a very rough and demanding racecourse that
challenged machine and rider alike during
Racing Enterprises Motorsports' weekly Satur·
day motocross.
In the always·competitive 125cc Junior
ranks, KTM's Brock Harden took the overall
win after putting in a stellar second moto on a
superrugged track tittered with jagged bumps
to earn the top honors. After placing third in
the first moto. Harden took the holeshot on his
KTM SX 125 in the second stanza and never
looked back, eventually winning the moto with

a five-second advantage. Harden's 3-1 finish·
es were good for the class victory. Chris Ayers
was the best of the rest, although after winning
the first moto aboard his YZ 250F, he encountered trouble in the second race and struggled
home in sixth place. On the day, Ayers' 1·6
showing was still good for the runner·up slot.
Kawasaki·mounted Bill Berqkvist finished up
in third place overall after posting a 5-3 tally.
Kurt Samuelson put another green bike in the
top five after he piloted his KX 125 to a 7-2
showing to earn fourth overall, while Frank
Masi filled out the top five positions with 6·4
rides for the day.
In the Over 40 Intermediate division. for·
mer Harley-Davidson factory dirt-track rider
Gary Scott took home the overall class honors
with a solid 1·2 showing on the day, aboard
his Honda CRF450R. Scott gated well in each
moto and rode without a mistake to top the
field. Karl Johnson made it a Honda one· two,
as he took home the runner·up honors on the
day with a 2-3 performance on his CRF450R.
Gary Harada put a Yamaha in the top three. as
he won the second moto and combined it with
a sixth·place finish the first time out for third
overall aboard his John Burr/MT Racing
YZ450F. Frank Villa finished in fourth place
after putting up a 3·5 posting on the scoreboard with his Villa Racing Products Honda
CR250. Tom Mellor filled out the top five spots
after racing to a 4·6 showing on his Kawasaki
KX250.
Off~road ace Kevin Jennings showed his
prowess on a chopped-up track as he topped
the 250cc Intermediate class with a perfect
I-I effort for the day aboard his Yamaha
YZ250. Motocross Action's Tim Olson chased
him across the line both times out for second
overall with a pair of second-place finishes.
Cliff Jennings took home the third· place hon·
ors after putting in 4·3 rides, while Chris Wee·
don rolled in fourth with a 3·5 showing on the
day. Jason Lentz came in fifth after posing 5·4
scores with his Honda CRF450R.
Glen Helen Raceway Park
Harrison Shines
at SRA GP
By DAVE DAIN
SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JAN. 26
Warm, Windy weather greeted the large
turnout of riders at the opening round of the
Southland Racing Association's 2003 Gran
Prix Series. The windy conditions quickly dried
out the Glen Helen track, leaVing conditions
dusty. KTM·mounted Revelle Harrison proved
to be fastest in those dusty conditions, claim·
ing top honors in the Over 30 Expert division.
Yamaha-mounted Tracy Monterone
grabbed the holeshot and led the pack into the
sweeping "Talladega" first turn. Ryan Johnson
was on Monterone's tail, in second. Ron War·
ren and Harrison followed in third and fourth,
respectively. The top spots remained the
same as Monterone led the field into the
canyon and out of view.
Johnson was the first rider back into view
as he exited "Bud's Creek." Harrison moved
up two spots, into second. Eric Hallgath came
through the pack to settle into third. Craig
McCall and Jim Henn completed the top five.
Former leader Monterone was nowhere to be
seen. Johnson and Harrison continued to set
the pace in front as the pack headed back
toward the canyon.
As on the previous lap, the lead changed
while the riders were out of view. Harrison was
the first to come back into sight. Hallgath and
McCall moved up into second and third.
Dustin Evans moved up from a midpack start
to settle into fourth. and Henn remained in
fifth. Once again, the rider who ted the pack
into the canyon failed to come out. as John·
son appeared to have suffered the same mys·
terious fate as Monterone.
The top five remained the same as Harrison took his turn leading the field into the
canyon. Harrison was the first rider to go into
the canyon in the lead, and he came out of the
canyon in the lead. Harrison not only "survived" the canyon, he also pulled a lead that
would prove to be insurmountable. KTM·
mounted Hallgath was equally comfortable in
second. McCall and Evans remained locked in
a battle for the final spot on the podium.
Evans kept McCall close but could never
make the pass for third. Henn trailed a distant
fifth.
With the white flag waving, the top five
appeared to be settled. Harrison enjoyed a 45second lead. Hallgath remained in second but
was slowing, and he eventually pulled off the
track. Hallgath's early exit bumped everyone
up one position.
