Regional Arenacross Series Broadbent Arena Gibson Grabs the Green By MARK BUCHANAN Swamp Fox Enduro: Barry Hawk snatched up the Swamp Fox win at round six of the SETRA Enduro Series in Charleston, South Carolina. SETRA Enduro Series Round 6: Swamp Fox Enduro TheHawk Got The Fox By SUZY MOODY CHARLESTON, sc, JAN. 19 Ahhh, the first SETRA race of the New Year. A chance to clear out the cobwebs from the holiday season. A chance to tryout the new bike or gear you got for Christmas. A chance to catch up with old buddies. A chance to abuse your body like it ain't been done for some time. Ohhh, how we look forward to the whoops at Charleston. But really, the Swamp Fox Enduro has become an annual rite for many Yankees, who come down from the frozen north. It's also an opportunity for the Sand Dogs from Florida to come up to the familiar terrain of South Carolina. This race has become a real gathering place for riders outside of the normal SETRA area . but hey, the more the merrier! The route chart showed the riders about 74 miles of trail from start to finish, at 30 mph. The first few sections were run in what seemed to be the more public riding area, but as the day wore on, the trails were some of those less traveled, with lots of sand and whoops. The first section was about 11 miles long. Two riders dropped only one point: Gas Gasmounted fast cat Russell Bobbitt and Yamaha· mounted Randy Hawkins. Not bad, but Barry Hawk . with little to no timekeeping . shot in on his minute to be the only "zero" in this section. Again, in the next few sections, Hawk would squeeze in under the wire and get just a point here and a point there. However, the AA riders are not the only riders out there! Riding on row four. Brian Deveney put in a great ride, dropping 58 points for the day and taking the win in the C Super Senior class, one of the largest classes of the event. Another big class, with more than 24 riders, was the C Senior class, which was won by fast David Rehm. Also, even burning a check. Jason Baldwin took the win in the C Four·Stroke class. Robert Tanner, riding his new KTM 200 EXC, rode like he had a fire under his tires, burning down the woods and winning the B Senior class. Bruce Renner and Mike Douglas both dropped 46 points in the B Open class; Renner won on the tie breaker. Ohio rider Brad Sells and SETRA rider Steve Saunders duked it out in the A Vet class; both dropped 3 J points, but Saunders won on the tie breaker. And as for those Yankees who came down from the north? Well, check out the score of Ohio rider Amanda Mastin in the Women's class: a dam good 51. 48 MARCH 5. 2003 cue I e Scanning the scoring boards at the end of the day, all eyes were on what seemed to be a five-way tie for the overall among Bobbitt. Allen Gravitt, Stephen Reed, Hawkins and Tommy Veator. who each dropped 22 points. That, of course, was before the officials put up Hawk's score - a 17! According to his row mates, they had to tell Hawk when it was time to go into a check; imagine what havoc he could wreak if he knew how to keep time.... The Family Riders Club, in cooperation with the Wambah Forest District, put on a top' notch event. The staging area was located deep in the Francis Marion Forest, at the trail head of a full·time public riding area. The Family Riders expressed their appreciation to district ranger Willy Erving and director of recreation Jana Larson for their support of this event and of the sport. Also on hand, with plenty of hot chocolate and hamburgers, was the local Lions Club. Thanks are due to all involved. This was a great race, and everyone is looking forward to next year.
