Wicomico Civic Center
Everything's Jake
for Johnson
By JENNIFER WILSON
SAUSBURY, MD, JAN. 31-FEB. 1
Everyone has his day, but Jake Johnson of
Deptford, New Jersey, had two this weekend
at Checkered Flag Productions' Indoor Short
Track Races at the Wicomico Civic Center in
Salisbury, Maryland. Johnson rode his Honda
CRF450R to victory after he overtook leader
Don Miller on Friday night and sped off to
grab first place in the 250cc Open Pro class.
That wasn't the end of the excitement: Ken
Yoder rode fast and hard around the curves to
follow Johnson and take second, while Raun
Wood new from fifth place to cross the checkers in third place.
On Saturday, Johnson absconded with the
holeshot, He kept control of the lead and finished first yet again, taking Ed Beckley's bigmoney prize on both nights. Paul Lynch was
on Johnson's tail and chased him to come in
second. Roger Durkee battled fiercely on his
way to third place.
John Lewis took two first-place trophies
home to Pennsylvania for his finish in the
250cc Open Amateur class on Friday night.
Gary Lachance followed him in second, with
Jason Palmer hugging his heels in his fight to
place third. On Saturday night, David Reeves
shot the hole, but he lost the lead as well as
his momentum when Lewis, riding his Honda
450, flew past him on the fifth lap. Reeves
took second place, while Nicholas Henderson
fought hard to take third.
After falling out in his heat, Austin Green·
field came back in a big way in the 60-80cc
main on Friday night when he grabbed the
lead and didn't let go. Bailey Spence came in
second, and Tyler Kidwell was third. Saturday
wasn't such a wonderful showing for Greenfield; he took the holeshot but lost his lead on
the last lap when Spence passed him by,
never looking back. R.J. Hart IV came in third.
In the Vintage class on Friday night, Honda
rider Larry Weiss took the lead early on and
held on to it with a vengeance. He was hounded around the curves by Mike Erving and Bill
Boram, but they were unable to overtake him.
