California Gold Cup Motocross Series Round 2: Perris Raceway Two Out of Thre Ain't BCld A STORV AND PHOTOS BV GREG ROBERTSON PERRIS, CA, JAN. 26 merican Suzuki's Drew Gosselaar won five out of six motos entered to top both the Supermini and 85cc Open classes and also finished a close second in the 85cc (12-13) field at Perris Raceway during round two of the fifth annual Maxxis/FMF/ Barnett/Maxima-sponsored California Gold Cup Motocross Series. Perris Raceway regular Justin Mulford was the quickest out of the gate in the first Supermini moto, but he was soon being pressured by Gosselaar and Sean Hackley. Mulford's lead lasted until the midway point, when he slid out in a turn. Mulford was quickly back up and under way in third place, behind Dana Drier, who had overtaken Hackley for second place. Gosselaar got to the checkers first with five seconds to spare over Mulford, who managed to repass Drier for second. Hackley was a close fourth, followed by Cody Jeffries and Buck Ford. Moto two was a duplicate of the first, with Mulford, Gosselaar and Hackley arguing over the top spot early in the race. Mulford and Gosselaar made contact in a corner, and Mulford went down. Hackley was running a close third and also went down while trying to avoid the fallen Mulford. Gosselaar cruised in for the uncontested win. Hackley remounted and got under way to finish second in the moto and second overall. Third went to the Drier (3-4), who topped Mulford (2-6) and Beau Weigand (7-3). Gosselaar and Hackley returned to do battle in the 85cc Open class. Gosselaar pulled out to insurmountable leads on his Axo/Renthal/Dunlop/661 /FMF -backed RM85 for a sweep of the field. Hackley worked his way up into a pair of runner-up finishes, ahead of Michael Truglia (4-3), Nick Sanchez (3-5) and Ivan Ramirez (7 -4). Hackley and Mulford went at it over the lead in the opening 85cc (12-13) moto_ Hackley held off Mulford for the well-deserved win. A bobbie midway through the race held Gosselaar back to a third-place showing, ahead of Drier, Tyler Smith and Ford. Moto two was run under the lights, and it was all Gosselaar's, but the overall belonged to No Fear-backed Kawasaki jockey Hackley, with a 1-2 tally. Mulford (2-4) picked up the third-place trophy, behind Gosselaar. Drier (4-3) and Sanchez (7-3) rounded out the top five finishers. Team Green's Richie Owens was untouchable in the first 250cc Pro moto_ Leighton Lillie overtook Cody Randall for second place halfway through the race but ran out of time in an attempt to run down Owens. In moto two, Owens and Lillie got around a fast-starting Randall and battled over the lead right up until the checkers, with Owens prevailing. KTM-mounted Cale Wallace collected the 125cc Intermediate firstmoto victory, though not without a fight from Garrett Taylor, Jeff Bell and Michael LaPaglia. Wallace got the much-needed start in moto two, but Taylor kept his YZ250F glued to Wallace's back fender for the entire distance, just waiting for Wallace to make a mistake, which never happened. LaPaglia was a close third for third overall. Bell (3-4) and Shawn Taylor (5-8) earned fourth and fifth, respectively. LaPaglia got some revenge by running away with both moto wins in the 250cc Intermediate class on his U.S. Suzuki/Pro Circuit-sponsored RM250. Caleb Gosselaar put in a great come-from-behind secondmoto effort, going 3-2 for second overall_ Taylor went 2-3 for third. Adam Gragg's 5-4 score edged out the 4-5 tally of Jason Jeffrey for fourth overall. The race for the 65cc (9-11) win became a two-man show in both motos, with Johnny Jelderda and Nick Paluzzi dicing well ahead of the field. Jelderda ended up seeing the checkers first, with Paluzzi camped out on his back fender. The battle for third was just about as intense; (Left) Michael LaPaglia was runner-up In the 125cc Intennediate class at Perris Raceway but came back to sweep the 250cc Intennedlates. (Right) Team Green's Richie Owens won the 250cc Pro class and finished second in the 125cc Pro class in Perris, California. 58 FEBRUARY 26, 2003' eye I e n e _ 50 Drew Gosselaar won the Supennini and 8Scc Open classes and finished second in the 8Scc (12-13) class at round two of the California Gold Cup Motocross Series. Armando Aguilar held off both Kyle Corfman and Dylan Schmoke to get the job done. Paluzzi returned in 65cc Open action for a commanding two-moto sweep aboard his Maxxis/JBC/Renthai-backed Kawasaki. KTM pilot Mason Sweeden turned a couple of good starts into a pair of runner-up finishes, a safe distance ahead of Aguilar, Schmoke and Tommy Aquino. Jessy Nelson was equally impressive in the 65cc (6-8) class, where he escaped with a couple of good starts and let everyone else fight over second place. Garrett Jackson easily finished second in the opening moto and then came from out of the pack in moto two to duplicate his performance to earn the second-place trophy. A 3-4 score gave Eric Yorba third, over the consistent 5-5 tally of Gerardo Roldan and the 8-3 efforts of Daniel Overton. eN Perris Raceway Perris, California Results: January 26, 2003 [Round 21 P/W (4ยท6): I.
