CMC Golden State Nationals North Round 2: Argyll Cycle Park Tony Sherman rolled to a four-moto sweep of the 12Scc and 2SOec Intermediate classes at round two of the CMC Golden State Nationals North, held at Argyll Cycle Park. STORY AND PHOTOS BY CMC STAFF WRITER DIXON, CA, JAN. 19 ony Sherman shook up the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate ranks with a four-moto sweep of both classes during round two of the CMC Golden State Nationals North, held at Argyll Cycle Park. This round of the Golden State Nationals drew nearly 400 racers from California, Washington and Idaho, and those racers were treated to nearly perfect racetrack conditions, with deep ruts and loamy dirt replacing the usual dry, flat terrain for which Argyll is renowned. Sherman's day started out just like he planned - with a holeshot in the 125cc Intermediate class and what appeared to be a hands-down, runaway victory. Sherman's lap times were in the one-minute-and-20-second range - as good as those of any of the Pro racers in attendance. The remaining motos in both the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes went about the same way, with the exception of "Ice Man" Steven Hernandez, who put up some resistance in moto two of the 125cc Intermediate class. Sherman, however, may not have anticipated the threat of Mini sensation Mike Alessi or the speed of the diminutive 14-year-old Team Honda racer in the 125cc Schoolboy ranks. Sherman nailed the holeshot but was dogged by Alessi for two laps before succumbing to the pressure. Alessi made the pass and then went on for the moto win while Sherman went back to the drawing board. All eyes were on the two in the final moto. This time, Alessi put the CR 125 Honda to the front and then promptly said "goodbye" for the moto and overall win. Alessi also posted wins in three other classes (for a total of four on the day): the 85cc (14-16), 85cc Open and Supermini classes. Pee Wee (7-8) class winner Jessy Nelson was, without a doubt, the "Ironman" of this week's event, with quite a demanding travel schedule. "We came here and parked the trailer, then drove over 400 miles to Anaheim so I could race the KTM 50cc Challenge," Nelson said. "The best part of all of that was that I won in front of the whole Anaheim crowd." The Nelson family then drove from Anaheim back to Dixon to race the second Golden State round. "My mom did all the driving while my dad slept," said Nelson, who was untouchable on the day in the 50cc (7 -8) ranks, winning both motos by impressive margins. In addition to top Pee Wee honors, Nelson posted a third overall on a 2-3 tally in his first-ever 65cc race, behind brothers Lucas Jones (3-2) and double-moto winner Trevion Jones, who had made the trek down from Seattle, Washington. Another racer from the great Northwest who was on fire in Dixon was Suzuki jockey Kevin Tapia. The . native of Bonney Lake, Washington, posted a perfect 1-1 showing in the 85cc (7- 11) class, defeating the likes of 60cc Open-class winner Austin Howell and VZ racer T.J. Lorenz. eN (Right) After winning the KTM Challenge in Anaheim the previous night, Jessy Nelson made the more· than·400·mile trek back to Dixon, California, so he could win both 50cc (7-8) motos handily. (Below left) Mike Alessi won four classes on the day· the 80cc (14-16), Supermini, 80cc Open and Schoolboy divisions.
