Sanchez
Strong at Hollister
By RANDY HElM
HOLUSTER,CA,JAN.5
The clouds cleared, and a race broke out.
With most motocross races being canceled
lately in Northern California, the riders were
ready to race. Judging by the condition of the
road leading to the Hollister facility, most
thought the track was going to be muddy.
Fortunately, though, the track was in excellent
condition, and riders got to enjoy some great
racing with killer traction.
Jacob Sanchez of San Jose put together
two solid rides in the 125cc Novice class to
take the overall victory. He also rode well in
the Schoolboy class to take second overall for
the day.
In the first 125cc Novice moto, Sanchez
gated well and was inside the top three. By the
second lap, Sanchez had ridden his Suzuki
past early race leader Matt Crawford to take
the heim. Sanchez kept his lead until the
checkered flag flew and took the win. Honda
rider Shawn Burk of Templeton finished second. Burk didn't gate as well as Crawford or
Sanchez and therefore had to work his way to
the front. Crawford eventually finished a
respectable third on his Suzuki - not bad, considering Crawford just moved into the Novice
ranks.
In the second 125cc Novice moto.
Sanchez and Mark Abrew were leading the
way around the Hollister track. Sanchez and
Abrew were the front two for almost two laps,
until Wesley Norris came up to spoil the fun.
Coming from about sixth place. the Yamahamounted Norris charged until he had the lead
going into the third lap. Sanchez kept him
honest but was unable to retake the lead. At
the checkers. Norris came across first. with
Sanchez in hot pursuit. finishing second. Third
went to Burk, who again had to work his way
to the front after a slow start.
When the dust settled, Sanchez took the
overall with a 1-2 tally. Burk earned second
with solid 2-) finishes, and Wesley Norris
(5-1) received third aher his great secondmoto ride.
In the Schoolboy class, Sanchez again
rode strong and finished second overall with
4-) scores. The winner in the Schoolboy division was Gino Scolari Jr., who went 1-2 on his
Yamaha. The third spot on the podium was
filled by Yamaha rider Nick Markert, who used
his steady 3-4 finishes to take home the
bronze.
Once the scores were tallied in the 250cc
Novice class, Gary Wedman was declared the
winner. His results were actually really easy to
determine, because the Suzuki pilot had a
great day and went 1-1. Second place was up
for grabs, and Honda rider Dominic
Marchewka was able to get his hands on it
with )·6 moto scores. Honda·mounted Tony
Morais from Milpitas ended the day in third,
going 6-4.
In the aocc Novice division, Yamaha pilot
Joshua Duppong emerged the winner via his
1-2 moto finishes. Robert Alquist, also riding
blue. took second on the day with 2-) scores.

Childress went down hard when his Team
Green Kawasaki hit a rock, but he still man~
aged to limp in for a third-overall finish.
Nick Hamill was the top finisher in the
Expert Mini division, piloting his FMF/
Goat/BRP/Dad-backed Yamaha to a secondoverall, first· in-class finish for the one·loop
riders.
"Some of these Super Seniors [riders over
601 are hard to get by," said Hamill. "These
old guys are still pretty fast!"
Nick Blais found himself in an unusual
position when he took the second overall
Amateur position.

RED MOUNTAIN, CA, JAN. 12
The 2003 AMA District 37 Desert Championship Series got off to a great start with the
Jackrabbits MC "Butt Hare" Desert Scrambles
at Red Mountain, California, where more than
450 riders lined up for the season opener.
Fifteen-year-oJd Brett Saunders, who was
bumped up into the Expert ranks for the new
season, proved he couid bunny-hop with the
big boys when he took the checkers in the
eighth overall position and first in the 0-200cc
Expert class.
Saunders fired his O'Neal/GPR/BRP
Kawasaki with one kick on the traditional
desert dead· engine start and found himself
running ninth overall when he headed into
the pits.
"I came out of the pits behind lack and
Luke Dodson: Saunders stated, "but I
crashed hard in the technical section they
added on the second loop when I tried to
pass lack."
Saunders was able to restart and then
kicked his 125cc bike up a notch to stay in
the top lOon a course that favored bigger
bikes.
MThis course was fun," said Saunders. "It
had a little bit of everything."
The Open Expert class had a three-way
battle raging among Mike Childress, Steve
Hengeveld and Doug Chiapuzio. Childress hit
the pits first, with Hengeveld right on his rear
fender. Chiapuzio was a couple of minutes
behind, but he quickly made up the time on
his KTM 540.
"I got by Childress about 10 miles from the
finish," exclaimed Chiapuzio, who finished
second overall, "but five miles later. I went
over the bars! [ was able to get back in it
before Childress caught me. but I couldn't
catch Hengeveld."
Hengeveld had his own strategy on how to
get his MSR/Scott/IMS/American Honda
across the finish line first.
"I just kind of hung back behind Childress
on the first loop," explained Hengeveld. "I
wanted to let him get tired out. and I waited for
the second loop before I made my move."
Hengeveld and Childress swapped the lead
several times before Hengeveld got by for
good and took the overall win. Unfortunately,
