Raines at the Reins
at the Rattler

The inaugural Rattler Hare Scrambles. sanc~
tioned by the Southeastern Enduro [., Trail
Rider Association (SETRA), was a great suc·
cess. The rains from earlier in the week left
the 9.5-mile course a bit soggy in a few
places, causing some "sticky" conditions.
With riders such as Randy Hawkins, Jason
Raines and Scott Summers on hand, the
crowd watched eagerly to see who would
emerge first from the woods to the motocross
portion of the track. After his absence from
the racing scene for a while, it was a pleasant
surprise to see Summers pop out of the woods
at the 8~mile mark in first place. It was almost
40 seconds later before second~placed rider
P.A. Allen popped out of the woods, followed
closely by Doby Leonard, Bryan Henson and
then Raines, in fifth.
After a poor start. Hawkins had worked his
way to fourth place by the second lap, but
then he took a stick to the radiator, and that
ended his day.
After the leaders started to catch up to
lapped traffic. the real race started to unfold.
By the third lap, Raines had moved into second, with Allen only seconds behind.
On the fourth lap, Summers managed to
get hung up on one of the many ever~deepen~
ing mud bogs, and Raines took over the lead.
Raines took home the overall victory and
the $300 purse provided by Performance
Cycle of Dalton, Georgia. Since Hawkins and
Raines rode over together from South Caroli~
na, one might wonder if Hawkins made Raines
pay for the gas.
The conditions made for some great racing
in many of the classes. In the Open A class,
Paul McColl edged out second-place finisher
Mitch McRee by just three seconds after five
laps and 47.5 miles of woods racing. In the
Vet B class, Greg Brannon beat Rick Ward by
a slim margin of nine seconds. In the 250cc C
class, Christopher Book finished just five sec·
onds before Robbie Overstreet after 29.5 miles
in the morning race. Junior rider Ryan Overton was the only rider out of the 19 entered in
his class to make all three laps in the morning
race.
Jellystone Park Campgrounds: Pat Bean (3) and Tim Farrell (42) lead off the line in the
Open Pro race at the second CWIRA ice race of the season, in Fremont, Wisconsin.
