P&D Promotions Indoor Race San Jose Fairgrounds After 28 Years, San Jose Runs Again! took that victory. Frank Nye was first to the checkers after getting around Jason Pullen in heat two. The final 100cc heat ended with Dave DeCamp just inches in front of David Morgan. In the Vintage Trophy Dash, the night's four fastest Vintage riders were on the track. Hocking and Perri were first into tum one, but in no time Rod Spencer got by Hocking, and the battle between Perri and Rod was on. Coming out of turn three on the last lap, they had to maneuver to get by a downed rider; Rod let off the throttle, giving Perri the chance he needed to get past. Agreeing to ride again at the request of the spectators, Perri and Hocking were again first to the first tum, but Rod got by them both to win this one. In the Open Dash, Perri was first to turn one again, in front of six others, but Rod had a wheel under Perri and never let off. Spencer tried getting around on the inside and outside and finally got the advantage and the win when Perri bobbled coming out of turn three to the finish. The Open semis were exciting: the top two riders from each transfered to the A main for a total of 12 riders from the original 30-plus. FollOWing the open semis was the Vintage A main. On the front row, Perri had the inside pole, with Brad and Rod Spencer next, followed by Russell Firanzi Jr., Rick Hocking and Joe Carrera on the outside. Hocking, took the lead out of the first turn, with Perri on the inside and Firanzi on the outside. Rod worked his way through traffic, getting by Hocking on the inside, and he went on to finish this 15-lap race first, followed by Brad and Firanzi. In the 100cc A main, Eric Kiser got the lead from the start. Starting from the second By KAREN GOOLD SAN JOSE, CA, DEC. 21 This indoor racing event - not held in San Jose for 28 years - was put together by Pete and Diane Francini of PErD Promotions, and it was a great success. Taking place in an exhibition hall on a polished concrete surface, with 65 riders and 1000 fans in attendance, this was racing at its best. Sponsors for the event included Honda (for the Formula 100 race), Therma (for the fencing), Marty Lewis, Rod Lake, Jimmy Odom and countless others who gave their time, materials and talents. Dana Perri and Rod Spencer battled throughout the night, race after race, for the first position. Each captured a fast-time qualifier - Perri in the Vintage class and Spencer in the Open class. Each also won the Vintage Trophy Dash (run twice by agreement), and each won a main event. The Vintage event included three heat races and a last-chance qualifier, with 12 of the 16 riders making it to the main. The Open class included five heat races and three semis; in the end, 12 of the 32 riders would compete in the A main. The Formula 100 event also had three heat races and a lastchance qualifier. In the Vintage heat races, the crowd was cheering as Rick Hocking and Perri went into the first turn together; Perri was first to the checkers in this one. Spencer and Joe Carrera were first to turn one in the second heat, with Spencer crossing the finish first. In the final Vintage heat, Johnny Larson was in front at the first turn, but Brad Spencer got under him and to the checkers first. Mike Besemer and Jimmy Abrams got the lead in the first 100cc heat; Abrams row and thereby having to get past those in front, Mike Besemer was able to take the second spot across the line_ The day's final race lined up, and when the light changed, Hocking, Perri and John L1ebo jumped out in front. This 20-lap main event saw position changes throughout. Hocking held the lead during the first few laps, with Tony Rose, Matt Proto and Perri following. Perri got by Proto, Rose and Hocking, while Rod was working his way through the pack from the rear. In the meantime, Beau Brown and Daniel Fishman were held up when Danny Casey bobbled and took a tum into the infield, allowing Rod to get by both of them and into top contention. With so much confusion on the track, Perri didn't realize he had won until after he took the checkers, Rod and Rose followed Perri to the podium. San Jose Fairgrounds San Jose. Las Vegas Motor Speedway Hail Humphries! By DICK GOODWIN U.S VEGAS, NV, DEC. 7 Longtime rivals Zac Humphries and Justin Fraughton went back and forth in the Open Big-Bike class at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway during round seven of Club MX's Fail Motocross Series. Fraughton drew first blood, leaping off the gate to lead Damon Wasden and the only Pro in the race, Justin Jenson, when action opened up in race one. Michael Parker was on the move early on, slashing and smashing his way through the pack to claim second place. Humphries was midpack, pushing his way toward the front. When Parker, battling for the lead, went down in the canyon drop-off, Humphries was able to take over second. Fraughton and Humphries opened up some space, and the lead duo was setting a torrid pace. At the finish line, Fraughton preserved his wire-to-wire triumph by an eyelash. Wasden edged Chad Enos for third. Humphries was juiced up for the second half, shooting out in front of Jenson and Josh Blaunett when the gate dropped. This time. it was Fraughton's turn to come raging up through the pack. Humphries was flying at warp speed out in front, so Fraughton's charge would end at second place. Humphries' big win netted him the overall Open Big-Bike title, while Fraughton settled for a solid second. Wasden led Chris Champlin and Blaunett in the final results. Champlin was the man in the combined Vet race, winning both halves with ease. Brian DeMiile led Ken Martin and the rest of the pack when race action began. Jack Doyle made an early run, grabbing the lead and staying in front - until he was passed by Champlin. Once out in front, Champlin cranked it up and took off for home. Paul Ferraro and DeMille were battling bar to bar for second. Champlin romped to win number one, while Ferraro edged DeMille for the runner-up spot. Todd Clark cruised home in fourth. Martin jumped all over the start of the second half, but Champlin was breathing down his neck. Champlin burst through for the lead, while Mike Vail blasted into second. Racing hard, Champlin built up a huge lead, as DeMille and Doyle moved up to scrap for second. Champlin waltzed off with easy win number two, while Doyle turned up the wick to emerge with a lonely second place. Clark led a tight pack comprised of DeMille, Ferraro and Martin through the pipes to capture third. Club MX was finishing up its Fall Motocross Series, and the final round was the perfect stage for Esposito to strut his stuff. In the combined 85cc Stock race, Thousand Oaks Kawasaki-sponsored 85cc (7 -11) hotshoe Ronnie Goodwin blew off the line to lead Esposito, Suzuki-mounted Jared Partridge, and Honda of Houston's Jeagher La Fountaine around the course. La Fountaine fought his way into third. Esposito was leaning on Goodwin. but the Maxima rider wouldn't crack. Partridge moved back into third, mounting a charge toward the front. Midrace, Esposito used a west· side sweeper to take the lead, and once in front he opened up some daylight. Partridge was right on Goodwin as the two battled furiously over second_ Partridge battled past Goodwin and then chased Esposito through the pipes, and Goodwin led La Fountaine and Prince Kapahulehua at the checkers. Goodwin nailed start number two. as Esposito and Partridge gave chase. Tony muscled past for the lead on the west side, as Goodwin and Partridge went bar to bar once again for second. Partridge prevailed and set out after Esposito, while Kapahulehua came up to challenge Goodwin for third. Esposito held off the determined Partridge to claim his second straight win. Kapahulehua launched off the big triple on the white-fiag lap to nip Goodwin for third. Team Raz rider Bronson Angulo edged La Fountaine for fifth. Fast guy Zachary Fussell also won everything he entered, going two for two in the 65cc Stock combined race and the 65cc Open clash. Fussell flamed off the gate to lead the combined 65cc Stock classes. Tai Barrymore, Dusty Humphries and Shai-Anthony Ginden were in a tight pack, giving chase. Fussell turned up the wick, and Barrymore opened up a little daylight in second. Ginden took over third to set the finishing order for race one. Fussell shot out to lead moto two, with Barrymore, Humphries, Ginden and Otto Craig right on his heels. Fussell shifted up into warp drive and rumbled off to a big lead. Barrymore was once again established solidly in second; Ginden held down third. Fussell romped home, winning the race with ease. Barrymore followed him home, leading
