Then Bemisderfer grabbed the lead right away from his brother Tim, Jason Pickett. Harold Brossman and Smith. The Bemisderfer boys put some distance on the field, which they needed, as Smith began to slice his way forward, taking third at the end of the fifth lap. With less than two laps left. things really got interesting. After probing for several laps, Tim slipped under Bryan for the lead as they took the white flag. Smith then tried to get under Bryan as they entered the third tum, but both fell. Smith recovered to push across the line in fifth. The opposite happened in the 250cc Pro event, as Jake Johnson was the only rider left on the front row after the other three jumped the start. A rider of Johnson's caliber can pull away from others with people starting along· side him; give him a clear shot. and he'll disappear - and that's just what he did. Raun Wood led the rest, followed by Jason Isennock, Mike Varnes and Donnie Mullen. Mullen and Varnes got by Isennock. and then Wood started falling, moving everyone up a spot. With three laps to go, Mullen took over second. Austin Greenland pulled away from the 80cc field on his way to an easy third straight win. In the late laps, R.J. Hart, Evan Baer and BREECH TIMONIUM, MD, DEC. 21 Jay Boarman finally got to carry the check· ered flag after an undisputed win in the 250cc class at the final Timonium Indoor short track of the season. He had carried it at the opening race more than a week earlier after a confusing end to the race, but after review by offi· dais, another rider was declared the winner. On this night, Boarman started second, behind Dillon Cava and in front of Doug Reinert. Cava fell in the fourth tum on lap four, giving Boarman the lead. while Chris Hathaway recovered from an opening·lap fall to work his way into second by the 10th lap. On the final lap, Reinert and Hathaway collided in the third tum, letting Cava slip by Reinert for third. As has been the case at the previous two finals, the 125cc final saw Shawn Rothstein and Joey Schueler fighting for the lead. By a quirk in times, they lined up beside each other in their heat, semi and final. Schueler won the first two encounters, but Rothstein got the better jump at the start of the final, taking the lead from Schueler. with Chad Gochenour, Ryan Henderson and Brian McQuaid following. After a few laps of pressure, Rothstein started to pull out to a straight margin. Jumped starts played a part in a pair of finals. In the 400cc final, polesitter Rob Smith 46 JANUARY 22,2003' cue I e n e vv s .. Timonium Short Track: Jay Boarman scored an undisputed win in the 250cc class at the final round of the 27th annual Rodney Farris Memorial Indoor Short Track Series in Timonium, Maryland, Joey Parks bunched up and staged a close battle for second. Tyler Kidwell's bid for three straight 60ccclass wins hit a serious snag with a fall in the semi, but with only seven riders entered, he made the final, though he started from the less-desirable back row. Kyle Schlimme took the lead from Thomas Webb, Joseph Masta and Broc Schmelyun at the start. Kidwell started slowly but took fourth from Masta on the third lap. Getting by Schmelyun was difficult and time-consuming, and Kidwell finally had to resort to using the outside line to gradually pass him. In the late laps, he got by Webb. who then fell, bringing out the red. Since well over half of the race had been run, it was called, with Schlimme getting the win. A third djfferent winner was guaranteed for the Adult XR I 00 class, as both previous winners, Chris Carr and Scott Saunders, weren't entered. Bryan Douglas took the lead from Roy Miller, Isennock and Johnson at the start. Just past halfway, Miller slipped under Douglas off two and completed the pass entering three. Douglas stayed close, but the order remained the same to the end. The only other rider to complete a sweep of all three of his finals was Bailey Spence, in the 50cc (7-9) class. He took the lead from Colin Webb on the third lap and held off Webb's many attempts at retaking the lead. Dalton Worthington won the 50cc Oil-Injected contest, and Stephen Patterson won the 50cc (4-6) class.
