Claremore Expo Arena: (From left to right) Cory West, A.J. Eslick and Russ Marlin have some fun in the Mad Dog Mini class at the opening round of the Oklahoma Indoor Arena Race Series in Claremore. A small field of Vintage racers made the event look like a sure thing for Mike Newton, but you know how that goes. Newton smooth· Iy ran the low groove In the lead until the last lap, when he unceremoniously dumped it in tum four, giving Pryor, Oklahoma's Kedrin "Speedy" Arnett the win. Charles Frazier finished second, with Newton a pissed-off third. Jeff Brewster rode the same Yamaha to good· looking wins in the 125cc·250cc contest and the Open Amateur go. Brewster led all the laps in both contests, beating Randall Gillette, Dylan Marlin and "Big" Gary English in the 250cc class, and bested Newton, Chapman and Ian Washburn in the good-sized Open Amateur class. Hunter King made off with the win in the 80cc class. ahead of Tye Kyles and early leader Luke Brewer. Fred Mattox took a con· vincing win in the 50cc- 1OOcc class, ahead of Levi Harrelson and Jessie Frazier. Colton Stevens won the Pee Wee 50cc race, over Gunner Durham and Aaron Gillette. This time it was Sweeden who would advance to fourth, with Dillon Trotter in fifth. Mitchel Alcorn did his best to keep Leib in sight in all three motos of the 80cc (Through 11) class. Brent Bohanon, Rinauro and Richard Sterling followed to fill out the top five. In the 80cc Beginner class, Chris Garcia claimed the overall after taking second place to Willie Woo in moto one and then winning the second and third motos. Woo collected no points in moto three, which left the door open for Carey Ford, with his 4· 7 -2 scorecard. Casey Meron, Billy Brinker and Cody Rye had hit-and-miss motos but smoothed things out to claim the remaining top five spots, in that order. Phillip Thorstensen has been taking practice sessions with John Burr's Sean O'Connor, and the tips have been paying off. Thorstensen took all three moto wins in the 80cc (14·16) class, ahead of Ricky James. Bart Manwill, Austin Brown and Austin White. Manwill got a little redemption in the Supermini class, with Dana Dreier and Thorstensen (both of whom also scored one moto win) and Austin Eitel and, once again, Austin White finishing out the top five. In the Open class, Dreier and Thorstensen took a third and fourth to Tye Hames and George Jeffers, while Travis Baker nudged himself into fifth place overall with his 6·9· 7 scores. The time has come for James to retire the BOcc machine, as he is surely making an impression on his 125cc machine. Championship jackets were awarded to class champions, along with trophies that were actually trophies, not booby prizes! Dave Coupe Classic Series Round 1: EStreet Track Brandes, Gassin Smooth in the Sand By JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS MARYSVILLE, CA, DEC. 15 Armed with potent Yamaha thumpers, both Michael Brandes and David Gassin tamed the whooped-out terrain of the E Street Track en route to victories in the premier classes on the day. Brandes took care of business in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, while Gassin overcame a first· mota fall to claim the 250cc Intermediate win, This was the first round of the Dave Coupe Classic Series, and despite the lawsuit Coupe still has looming over his head stemming from an incident nearly one year ago at the facility, the event got the green light, and more than 600 riders came out to do battle on arguably the toughest track in Northern California. With help from the AMP Racing crew. Coupe laid out yet another track that changed from smooth as silk in the morning to a suspen· sion~beating monster by the end of the day. Brandes started things off with a big holeshot in the first 125cc Pro mota and quickly put some distance on the field. Having recently made a switch from a Honda to a Suzuki, the seasoned rider piloted his BR I Suspension~backed YZF to a huge win. Eric Nye took hold of the second spot early on and finished a distant second. While Nye couldn't match Brandes' speed, he also pulled a disappearing act on the field, while the third spot was up for grabs early on. After a mota-long battle with Calvin Andlovec, Jarid Blevins pulled through and made it a Yamaha sweep of the top three. Moto two once again featured Brandes out front, but with Nye within striking distance for most of the moto, Brandes had no room for error. The two checked out on the field once again, and at the checkers it was Brandes again after another flawless ride, followed closely by Nye. Blevins once again . rounded out the top three. In 250cc Pro action, it was once again the Brandes/Nye show in moto one, following a holeshot and brief lead by Simon Temmer·
