By JUSTIN WHARTON BATILEGROUND, WA, DEC. 8 Who says the medic has to just sit on the sidelines and wait for someone to do something crazy? Why can't he just do it himseif? In the combined Vet Junior, Vet Intermediate and Over 40 Junior contest at the fourth round of the Promoto Promotions Clark County Arenacross Series, those in attendance got to see the track's two medical attendants, Todd Knoeppel and Garren Elmer, go at it like they were going to need a medic themselves! Knoeppei grabbed the holeshot on his YZ 125, foilowed very closely by Elmer's booming YZ450F four-stroke and Joe Norman's monstrous KTM SX 520. Garren's brother Chris Elmer didn't even make it out of the first corner; he got pinched off and then run over by Dan Solland, but braveiy he got going again after being helped up off the ground. Up front, Knoeppel and Garren left Norman in their dust and involved themselves in a heated battle. At every corner, Garren tried to cut in or around Knoeppel, and at every corner Knoeppel anticipated where Garren would be and cut him off. The two remained locked in a game of cat·and-mouse, while Norman was riding in a lonely third. but in the back there was a three-way battle going between Solland, Dennis Starkey and, amazingly, Chris Elmer; the three were never more than a few bikelengths apart, Solland held off Clark County Fairgrounds: Cameron Norman takes a jump on his way to the 65cc-class win at round four of the Promoto Promotions Clark County Arenacross Series in Battleground, Washington, 65 (4·8): I. Meanwhiie, up front, Garren and Knoeppel were still going at it. with Garren looking a little faster; he was the only rider clearing the massive triple jump. but he couldn't seem to find a way around Knoeppel on the very supercross-oriented track. Garren kept trying to pressure Knoeppel into making a mistake, but lap after lap Knoeppel continued to just barely hold him off, The two went at it all the way to the finish line, with Knoeppel holding off Garren by a bikelength for the win in the Vet Intermediate class. Taking a distant third (and first in the Vet Junior class) was Norman. Placing fourth (and first in the Over 40 Junior class) was Dan Solland. Starkey was second in the Over 40 class, and Chris held out to finish second in the Vet Intermediate class. Aiex Coleman snared the holeshot in the 65cc Beginner class, but he was quickly passed by both Cameron Norman (one of a family of five racing Normans) and Brendan Johnson. Johnson and Norman immediately locked themselves in a battle for first place. leaving Coleman far behind, where he had to contend with Tyler Bunch and another one of the Elmer racing clan, Katie Elmer. Norman looked a little quicker but still didn't seem able to shake off first-year 65cc rider Johnson, who was pushing hard, trying to pressure Norman into making a mistake - but eventually that would prove to be his undoing. With Coleman riding all alone in third and Bunch and Katie far behind, Johnson was charging just to keep up with Norman. Just before the white-flag lap, Johnson came off the massive over-and-under jump a little hot. and just before going back under the jump, his rear wheel slid out. and his hopes of a first-place finish slid away with it. Johnson got up and tried to get his new KTM SX 65 started, but he seemed to have a bit of trouble; first Coleman, then Bunch. and then Katie passed him before he eventually got his bike running again. Norman came away with a solid win, Coleman putted into a quiet second· place finish, and Bunch claimed the last spot on the podium with a third-place finish. Johnson st.ill managed a fourth-place finish, and Katie rounded out the top five. CMA O'Neal MX Series Round 5: Grizzlies Stadium Out with a Bang! By EDDIE GRAVELINE FRESNO, CA, DEC. 8 December 8 was an important day for motocross racers in the Fresno area. It was the final round of the O'Neal MX Series. The final round of any series will create a lot of excitement. but this one had a few extras working in its favor. First of all. the end of the series meant that the top riders would be awarded "O'Neal Bucks," which they couid use to purchase whatever they wanted from O'Neal's 2003 apparel catalog. The factor that created the most hype around the race, though, was without a doubt the location. For the first time in the area. amateur racers were given the chance to ride on a supercross-style track inside a state·of-the-art baseball stadium. Naturally, an event of such magnitude brought out racers of all ages, and they came in large numbers. There were four divisions of 50cc riders, the fastest of which was the Open class.
