Promoto Promotions Saturday Scrambles Round 3: Clark County Fairgrounds There Is No Sanity Clause! By victory. and Tyler Scott won the Four-Stroke Stock (14 and Up) class. Most of the riders agreed that it would have been a much cooler race had Beau Brown (the racetrack's part· time practice coordinator!part·time referee/track builder, a former number-one flat-tracker, and arguably the fastest XR50 rider in this part of Washington) decided to participate. But maybe next time. JOSTIN WHARTON BATTLEGROUND,WA.DEC.7 There was some insane action in the third round of the Promoto Promotions Saturday Scrambles event, with some awesome - and sometimes downright weird - racing, especially in the adult 50cc races. (Maybe there should be a Sanity Clause included in the sign-up sheets, but everyone knows there is no Sanity Clause... ) In the combined Four-Stroke Stock (13 and Under) and Four-Stroke Modified (14 and Up) main event, Justin Watkins absconded with the holeshot, followed by Jake Paukert, Brian Goodwin and Jamie Nieto. Watkins . the lone rider in the 14 and Up Modified portion - raced off on his modified XR I 00, with kids a third his size racing after him. Paukert showed some good speed at the front of his class, though he still had to contend with Goodwin and Nieto. By the halfway mark, Paukert was in a real battle for the lead with Goodwin, and the two raced around the track on their Honda XRs until the fourth lap, when Goodwin finally got by for the lead. Then Paukert experienced some bad luck, as his bike died, and he had to watch Nieto go by also. Paukert got his bike running in time to salvage third, and he continued on. trying to catch up to Nieto and Paukert. In the back, there was some awesome rid· ing by Katie Elmer, as she moved up through the pack. eventually passing Austin Fuller for the fourth-place spot; yet she was unable to catch Paukert in third or her friend Nieto in second. When the checkers waved, it was Watkins with the 14 and Over win and Goodwin with the win in the 13 and Under division. Following Goodwin were Nieto, Paukert, Elmer and, Fuller rounding out the top five. The craziest race by far was the combined adults-on-minis race. Forcing his way into the first-moto holeshot was Elmer's dad, Garren Elmer. Pure and absolute insanity ensued as a entire pack of riders (half of whom hadn't even signed up) raced after him. The track announcer, Paul Watts, was the number·one favorite to catch him. Garren immediately had Watts on his tail, trying to shove him over, and Watts almost succeeded on the infamous over·and·under jump, giving him a friendly little shove off the side of it, but luckily Garren got going fast enough to make it up the large jump, and he proceeded to give chase. At that point, the dads started to get serious and began to cut the track and to ram riders off the track, even pinning opponents up against the track walls! The "mutiny" spread so quick· Iy that even the person waving the checkered flag started to pick and choose when to wave it, to help his favorite rider win! When the chaos finally ended, first place went to Watts who then withdrew from competition after deciding that this type of thing was just a little too dangerous (having hurt himself with a little too much moto-battling) and that he should stick to announcing. As the pack lined up for the main event. the crowd noted another missing player: Garren Elmer, who decided it was best for his 2003 Yamaha TTR90 that he not ride it anymore. With the two "front-runners" out of the game. first place was up for grabs. As the main event began, no one was sure who got the holeshot, as everyone tried to push their poor sons' and daughters' bikes beyond their limits - so much so that carnage was sure to come, and it did. Both Carl Deroo and Dan Wilson were vying for the title of the fastest XR50, going at it like two Pros. The fans had their eyes on Kyle Laudermilk. who took more soil samples than the track builders! Luckily, he always got up and running again, and he looked really impressive, as he and his brother Jason looked like the fastest riders out there . when not crashing. In the end, Wilson picked up the 50cc Beginner (14 and Up) victory, Deroo earned the Four-Stroke Modified (14 and Up) 42 JANUARY 1 5, 2003· eye Clark County Fairgrounds Battleground, Washington Results, December 7. 2002 (Round 3) 50 OIL·INJ: I. Dealer Support Series Round 3: Pax Trax MX Park CMA O'Neal MX Series Round 4: Hanford Fairgrounds Studstill Stellar New BE Improved BY EDDIE GRAVEUNE HANFORD, CA, DEC. I The penultimate round of the 2002 CMA O'Neal MX Series was held in the familiar confines of the Kings County Fairgrounds in Hanford. Califomia. While the facility itself felt like home to the Central California racers in attendance, the track was like nothing they had ever seen. Since the last race in Hanford more than a month prior to this event, the CMA crew had completely redesigned and rebuilt the track. The new layout had a few rough straightaways that would prove to get even rougher as the day wore on, an absolute· Iy brutal whoop section and several series of challenging double jumps that put a premium on timing. It was a track that had something for everyone to enjoy while still being very challenging. The long, sweeping design of the track naturally favored big bikes, but in true CenCal fashion, there were a bunch of Mini racers on hand. The little guys always put on a good show, but the difficulty of the course added even more drama than usual. Dozens of SOcc riders made the brave choice to ride. One of the toughest sections proved to be the whoops, which were waist·deep for a grownup and very difficult to negotiate smoothly. They claimed more than their fair share of the small bikes. The first-timers were led through the first moto by Fresno resident Trent Howard. He was smoking on a water-cooled Cobra and a little too much for Hayden Hilliard in that first race. The second moto was a different story, though. Howard fell out of contention while the KTM-mounted Hilliard got out to an early lead. Nathan Howard had finished third in the first race and looked good in the final as well. He stayed relatively close to Hilliard but couldn't make a viable move for the lead. Hilliard's 2-1 tally was enough to take the overall, over Nathan. Tara Nicholson was the fastest little lady in the class, finishing third overall. Jordan Isaguirre took control of the 50cc (0-6) division in moto one. He rode a great race and was able to hold off a charge by Cobra tamer Travis Burrough. However, Burrough wasn't giving up, and he came back strong in the second race. He took the lead aboard his yellow rocket and never looked back. Little D.J. L10ren wasn't too far back on his Husqvarna, but he wasn't within striking distance. Burrough's 2-1 tally gave him the overall victory. L10ren went 3-2 for second, while Isaguirre's fall to fourth in the second moto was still good enough for third place. With lsaguirre on a KTM, this class was one of very few to feature three different bike brands in the winner's circle. Finally, the "big dogs" of the 50cc class were let loose. Led by Landon Sullivan, the 7 - to 8·year-olds set an amazing pace for .05-liter bikes. Charlie Sheets, Brandon Orr and Joseph Reynolds were all on the gas, but Sullivan's flawiess riding left them to fight over I e n e vv s second place. Sullivan was doing several doubles that no other 50cc riders were even thinking about. He was on his game. to say the least. Reynolds proved to be the next~most consistent rider, finishing third and second in the two motos and taking second place overall. Orr completed the podium with a 2-4 showing. The 65cc action was hot as well. James Culbertson ended up being the only Novice, so he was sent out with the 9- to 11-year-olds. He rode his Suzuki with a clear track in front of him. Things were a iot tighter behind him. Tyler Cabral and Stephen Perretto locked horns in a great duel for the 65cc (9-11) class honors. Cabral struck first, winning the opening moto, but Perretto was right behind him, followed by Jessy Arthurs. The second moto saw the same three riders lead the pack. but this time Perretto and Cabral switched posi· tions. They kept it close once again, but Perretto had the advantage at the end and took the class victory with a 2-1 tally. Cabral was second, while Arthurs' 3-3 scores garnered third overall. The big-bike classes featured some great action as well. One stand-out battle was the epic two-moto dogfight between Brian Hulsey and Tony Wolf in the 125cc Pro division. There were a couple of unfortunate casualties as well: Kyle Kessinger and "Revvin'" Evan Stafford both went down and suffered By r - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ; ; . . - , I;j z
