California Racing Club Sponsorship Series Round 5: Los Angeles County Raceway e (Left) At the fifth and final round of the 14th annual California Racing Club Sponsorship Series, starter Don Gossett gets the Junior Vet Intermediate class under way. Tim Laster (third from right) was the eventual winner. (Right) Bill Sauro (60V) finished second in the 250cc Pro class and won the Vet Pro class at Los Angeles County Raceway in Palmdale, California. By GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE,CA,DEC.15 ZF-mounted Tim Laster turned a good start into a runaway victory in the Junior Vet Intermediate class during the rain-delayed fifth and final round of the 14th annual California Racing Club/Galpin Ford/Thousand Oaks Yamaha/Tru Tee/Pro Circuitsponsored Sponsorship Series. As this was the final points-paying race of the year, and along with the lure of being able to race on the same layout as the film industries' A Day In The Dirt event held a few weeks prior, nearly 400 riders made their way out to Los Angeles County Raceway. When starter Don Gossett waved his green flag to get the dead-enginestart, 45-minute race under way, Rick Knox took the early lead, followed by Laster, William Welch hance, Jason Fischer and the rest of the field. Knox put a few seconds on Laster on the opening lap of the extended track, but Laster upped the pace to close to Knox's back fender by the end of lap two. A short time later, Laster was out front and starting to pull away. Fischer got around Welchhance to control third, and Joe Masek moved up into fifth, ahead of Shy Moshe and Jeff Matthews. Laster's lead grew slightly with each passing lap, and by the time the checkers fell, he was nearly half a minute ahead of Knox. Fischer finished a close third, followed by Welchhance, Moshe and Masek. Brett Bennett was equally impressive in the Junior Vet Novice ranks; he absolutely destroyed his competition. Bennett parlayed a 10-second lead on lap one into a cushion of one minute after 45 minutes on the track. Justy Mendibles and Joel Grandbois were inseparable for most of the race, with Mendibles coming out on top to claim second place in the end. Doug Y 34 JANUARY 15,2003' cue I Wolfe chased Gabi Abayov for half an hour before being able to make the pass to secure fourth place in the final standings. David Medina led the first 10 minutes of the 85cc Beginner race before Tucker Hicks took over. Kalani Walsh relieved Hicks of the top spot near the midway point, but Kyle lmke steadily worked his way up from a 10th-place start to get to the checkers first. Jeremy Fraijo followed Imke up through the biggest class of the day to collect the second-place trophy. Walsh, Medina and Hicks finished third through fifth, respectively. Tyler Sjoberg has been a frontrunner throughout this series in the 85cc (7 - 11) class, and this day was no exception, as he made his way to the front of the pack on the opening lap and then held off fellow Kawasaki pilot Chris Plouffe during the later stages to earn the victory. Third went to Armando Aguilar, who was followed by Chandler Quimette and Keith Robinson. In what may have been one of his last rides in the 125cc Novice ranks, Garrett Norr totally dominated the class aboard his Nationwide Cycle/ Answer/N-Style-backed CR 125. Runner-up honors went to Yamaha rider Daniel Hendrix, who was the engineer of a trailing Yamaha freight train that also consisted of Colby Dawson, Brandon Reina, Benny Breck and Brett Mountain. Eric Anderson and Robert Clark traded the 250cc Novice-class lead back and forth a couple of times during their 45 minutes of track time, with Anderson ultimately prevailing at the finish. Bennett returned to methodically work his way up into a third-place finish. Paul Brown and Tyler Gunn rounded out the top five. American Honda's Mike Alessi put in a fine performance, as expected. Alessi was untouchable in both the n e _ s e 85cc (14-16) and Supermini classes, leaving everyone else to fight over second place. Jeff Alessi took runnerup honors in the Superminis, topping the likes of Bradley Turner, Plouffe and Quimette. Andrew Janes outran Tim Ritzier for second place in the 85cc (14-16) class. On his Mid Cities/Tom Morgan/ Answer-sponsored CRF450R, Jeff Eide set a blistering pace that couldn't be topped in the 250cc Pro class. Bill Sauro did his best to keep Eide in his sights en route to a second-place finish, ahead of Rory Sullivan. Sauro returned to take home some first-place money of his own by dominating the Vet Pro field on his YZ250. Bryan Nelson rode to an impressive second place on a borrowed bike, followed by Frank Costanzo, Ken Neitzel and Nick Mairose. eN Los Angeles County Raceway Palmdale, California Results: December 15, 2002 [Round 5 of 5J P/W YAM BEG: 1.
