Santa Fe Trail Cycle Park Wohletz Wins FMHS Championship Glen Helen Raceway Park By BRAD AND SHARON JONES Edwards, Collins Haulin' at REM MX CARBONDALE, KS, NOV. 17 A high school student from Lee's Summit, Missouri, Caleb Wohletz, took his fifth win of the season at the final round of the Forward Motion Hare Scrambles Series, thus becoming the youngest champion in the eight-year history of the series. On the start of the AA dass, Larry Barger took his YZ250 into the lead. Shane Dipasquale, on his Santa Fe Cyde Gas Gas, ran second, while Wohletz started third on his Letko/Axo/Scott/Red Bull-sponsored KTM. Barger dropped back as Wohletz and Dipasquale scrapped for the lead. Wohletz made his final pass on the motocross-track section of the course. Wohletz held the lead for the remainder of the race, puJling some very fast lap times. Dipasquale, who has been fighting neck problems all season, ran second until Adrian Bryant, another Gas Gas rider, moved past. On the sixth and final lap, Bryant came by the checkpoint at the one-hour-and-56-minute mark, some 16 seconds ahead of Dipasquale, but Bryant ran out of gas before he could finish the race. Dipasquale inherited second. and Barger picked up the pace in the final laps to finish a personal best of third overall. In the A class, O'Neal-sponsored Brad Jones took the holeshot, with Paul Dipasquale in tow. The Gas Gas dealer shot by Jones a few turns later. only to crash on a log while coming out of the creek. Jones took over the lead. On the second lap. Jones missed a tum and took Malcolm Smith-sponsored David Dillingham with him. Shawn Gowing shot past both riders for the lead. Dillingham soon passed Gowing and took off after the AA riders. Raiph Gerding, on a YZ250F, made his way past Jones and then slid by Gowing on the next lap. Dillingham, who won the A-dass championship for the season, finished way out front, ahead of Gerding. Jones passed Gowing late on the last lap for the final podium position. By ROCKNE HASH M: I. Both motos of 250cc Junior action were hotly contested and featured close battles that were not settled until the last laps in each race. In the first moto. Yamaha rider Brian Davis eventually took the win, just in front of Collins. Whitney Murphy, riding a 125, took third place, while Brandon Salos finished in fourth place a bikelength ahead of Matt Laten, dresse. In moto two, the running order was shaken up a bit, as John Minert took the holeshot and never looked back en route to the win, to follow up his sixth-place finish in the first race. Latendresse rode in for second place, barely holding off Salos in third. Collins came in fourth, with Murphy taking fifth. The overall class win went to Collins with his 4-2 rides. Minert's solid second moto netted him the runner-up slot with a 6-1 showing, while latendresse (5-2) finished up in third. Salos (4-3) was fourth, and Davis (I-6) filled out the top five. In the 80cc Beginner class, Edwards followed first-moto winner Leyland Cody to the checkered flag for a second-piace finish. Taylor Freeman rode his Honda to a third-place finish, while Kyle Scott took fourth and Jordan Borowski was fifth. In the second stanza, Edwards ripped the holeshot and rode without making a mistake to take the moto win. Cody put in a fine ride for second place, just in front of Borowski's Suzuki RM. Scott and Nathan Kimmell rounded out the top five. Edwards' second-mota win was good for the class victory on the day, while Cody's 1-2 tally placed him second overall. Borowski (5-3) was third, Scott (4-4) was fourth, and Freeman (3-6) was fifth. Steve Reeves bested the Vet Juniors with a solid 2-1 tally for the day, while Ludo Boinnard followed up his first-moto win with a third-place finish in the second race for second overall aboard his CRF450. By DAN BROTEN STAPLES, MN, NOV. 23 The weather outside was frightful, but the action inside MotoCity Raceway MotoDome was hot. as Eric Brouhard of Wyoming, Minnesota, on his Crown Mortgage Rotax, took the victory in the Open Pro class in the season's first event at the Dome. Brouhard made a late-race pass on heat winner Willie Broten of New Market. Minnesota, to take the win. The final saw Brouhard, Yamaha-mounted Broten and KTM-mounted Kurt Boehlke of Cambridge, Minnesota, pushing and banging handlebars on the first lap, with Broten taking the lead out of tum four. Broten held on to the lead until lap nine, when Brouhard made a pass on the inside. Brouhard, who was last season's champion, rode on to the win. In other action, multi-class participant Jim Brethorst of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, took the win in the 250cc A class. Brethorst survived several heat-race crashes and rode his recently acquired YZ426F to victory. He also placed fourth in the Open Amateur class and fourth in the Vet dass. Another multi-class rider, Chris Lauberscheimer of Minneapolis, Minnesota, rode his new Honda to victory in the 125cc A class. Lauberscheimer placed third in both the 8xc Mini and eocc Open classes after overcoming a shifting problem in his heat races: He was riding with a fresh engine, and it would not come out of first gear. His pit crew made repairs for the main events. The quote of the night came from Beginner-class rider Michael "Dan" Haggard of St. Paul, Minnesota. "This is fun," he stated. "I'm gonna do this again." Haggard rode his vintage SR500 Yamaha to third place in the Beginner main event after crashing on lap one of his first-ever dirt-track heat race.
